SAINT CLOCHE PRESENTS 19TH DECEMBER - 21ST JANUARY Evi O Evi O is an award-winning book designer and self-taught artist, most renowned for her abstract paintings. She works from her design studio in Surry Hills, Sydney. With a curious eye and mind, she is constantly exploring and observing her surroundings. To her, art practise is personal, honest and happy. The brief JET SET came at the most serendipitous timing for artist Evi O. She has just moved to a Marrickville studio that used to be an office for Ansett Airlines. Everyday she sees all kinds of planes flying in and out of Sydney airports from her studio windows, and while she has some fear of flying, at the same time planes and jets fascinate her. These two pieces are Evi O's abstract take on being up in the air, looking out of a plane's window. His interest soon grew into a studied pursuit and then a life-long passion. The COVID-19 virus has stressed us all, but as I write this letter, Spring and Fast forward decades, to the 1990’s. Chapter Six The Politics of Federalism Ben Davies In 1967 Sir Robert Menzies published Central Power in the Australian Commonwealth. In this book he adopted the labels coined by Lord Bryce to describe the two forces which operate in a federation—the centripetal and the centrifugal. For those uneducated in physics, such as myself, centripetal means those forces which draw power towards the centre, or the Commonwealth, whilst centrifugal forces are those which draw power outwards towards the States. Menzies remarked that these forces are constantly competing against each other, and that the balance between them is never static.1 Not surprisingly, his view in 1967 was that the centripetal forces had well and truly predominated during the previous 66 years of Federation. Of course, he would not need long to reach the same conclusion were he to consider the same question now, 40 years later. Essentially there are three levels on which these two forces exert themselves. The first and most fundamental is the legal level, which describes the constitutional structures which determine the federal balance. On questions of federalism this Society has since its inception quite rightly concentrated most on this level of federalism, as it is at this level that the most profound changes have occurred. It is also the most influential level, as it sets the boundaries within which the other two levels can operate. The second level is what I would call the financial level, and this level concerns itself with the question of the relative financial powers of the States and Commonwealth. In particular, this level is characterised by the ever-increasing financial dominance of the Commonwealth relative to the States, and the “vertical fiscal imbalance” with which the States have had to contend for most of their existence since Federation. -

HOTEL D’INGHILTERRA ROMA – STARHOTELS COLLEZIONE The most iconic hotel in Rome, preferred by the international jet-set. An impressive legacy dating back to the 16th Century Few locations in Rome can boast a history as prestigious as that of the Hotel d’Inghilterra Roma - Starhotels Collezione. It is beloved for its magnificent location, compelling history, eclectic originality and the effortless elegance with which it welcomes its elite clientele. The building dates back to the mid-sixteenth century when it was used as an aristocratic residence for visitors of Palazzo Torlonia, located across the street. By the 15th century the local area was renowned for hosting the city’s best hotels and attracted foreign visitors and international communities. The nearby luxury shopping street Via Borgognona owes its name to the group of merchants from the region of Burgundy, who populated the district since the early 1400s. In 1845, Palazzo Torlonia’s guesthouse was converted into a hotel known, due to its popularity with British visitors, as Hotel d’Angleterre. One of the hotel’s most famous residents was the English Romantic poet John Keats who spent time in the hotel during the last years of his tragically short life, together with his fellow countrymen Byron and Shelley. Even the hotel’s logo, inspired by the coat-of-arms of the British Royal Family, is a testament to the deep- seated, centuries-old link that the hotel has had with Britain and the Windsors. The distance between the sculpture of Sir Bertram Mackennal (1863-1931) and the extraordinarily diverse works W produced by contemporary Australian sculptors is virtually immeasurable. Some fascinating links, nevertheless, remain. Bertram Mackennal was the first Australian artist to achieve great success overseas.* For most of his career he was resident in London where he was accepted by the establishment and enjoyed royal patronage. Furthermore, he was the first Australian elected to the Royal Academy, the first to have a work purchased by the Tate Gallery and the first Australian artist to be knighted. Influenced by Rodin, he became part of the New Sculpture movement in the UK where he practiced an idealised DEL KATHRYN BARTON 1972 - I am loving you like this (version 2), 2008 naturalism, which gave a new life to the classical tradition. bronze edition 3/3 Essentially a modeller in clay, many of his works were subsequently cast in bronze, 100 x 34 x 36 cm while others were carved in marble. Relying heavily on commissions and patronage, he produced a great number of portrait busts, memorials such as the regal Queen Victoria Memorial, 1897-1901, at Ballarat and a wonderful series of very sensuous female nudes: the National Gallery of Victoria has his arresting Circe of 1893 in their collection. The sexuality was made palatable to the attitudes of his period by the use of classical references, as with Vesta, 1900, in this exhibition. -

Signature: Date: 14 May 2018 i ABSTRACT This thesis provides an account of the development of the visual arts in Perth from 1950 to 2000 by examining in detail the state of the local art scene at five key points in time, namely 1953, 1962, 1975, 1987 and 1997.
