Konservativ wird oft negativ konnotiert, es steht für das Altmodische und Rückständige. Es wird mit dem Parteiwesen assoziiert und in manchen Berufssparten für ein bestimmtes Vorgehen verwendet: in der Medizin wird jemand medikamentös konservativ behandelt, im Finanzwesen sind konservative Wertanlagen Sparbücher und Bausparverträge. In diesem Zusammenhang wird konservativ mit einem vorsichtigen Vorgehen verbunden. Die Literatur beschäftigt sich vor allem mit dem politischen Ursprung des Konservatismus, womit aber das heutige Verständnis nur noch am Rande zu tun hat. In den Medien wird eine Wiederkehr des Konservatismus, oft irrtümlich als Neokonservatismus bezeichnet, und ebenso sein Untergang prognostiziert. Doch was erwartet die Gesellschaft, wenn konservative Werte angeblich wieder im Kommen oder im Verfallen sind? Es soll deshalb in dieser genau darauf eingegangen werden, was unter Konservatismus und konservativ zu verstehen ist. Dem Fernsehen wird oft unterstellt, am so genannten Werteverfall der Gesellschaft beteiligt zu sein. Doch Fernsehformate transportieren eine Vielfalt an Werten, wenn auch oft durch Unterhaltung und Sensationalismus verschleiert. Denn Fernsehformate werden von Menschen produziert, die Teil der Gesellschaft sind, die nur die in der Gesellschaft anerkannten Werte durch Fernsehsendungen nach außen vermitteln. Sitcoms werden oft nur als unterhaltendes

We have held firm to this principle throughout my presidency and, as I leave Brooklyn College this summer, I am especially proud of what we have done together to give it life and to sustain it. Last fall, we admitted a freshman class larger and better than the year before and we were joined by forty new faculty members, bringing the number of scholars and artists we have recruited over the last nine years to 273, more than half the teaching faculty and more than we appointed in the previous three decades. We also welcomed a new Provost, Dr. William A. Tramontano, who brings proven leadership in initiating and implementing new academic programs.
