As your Wars of the Roses chairs, Teo Lamiot and I have been working hard with our crisis director, Sofia Filippa, and SMUNC Secretariat members to make this conference the best yet. If you have attended SMUNC before, I promise that this year will be even more full of surprise and intrigue than your last conference; if you are a newcomer, let me warn you of how intensely fun and challenging this conference will assuredly be. Regardless of how you arrive, you will all leave better delegates and hopefully with a reinvigorated love for Model UN. My own love for Model United Nations began when I co-chaired a committee for SMUNC (The Arab Spring), which was one of my very first experiences as a member of the Society for International Affairs at Stanford (the umbrella organization for the MUN team), and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Later that year, I joined the intercollegiate Model United Nations team. -

The Second Coming of the Second Tetralogy: Shakespeare’S Depiction of That “Which Is, and Which Was, and Which Is to Come.” (Under the Direction of M
ABSTRACT PRICE, TRUDY JONES. The Second Coming of the Second Tetralogy: Shakespeare’s Depiction of that “Which is, and Which was, and Which is to come.” (Under the direction of M. Thomas Hester.) Shakespeare’s second tetralogy is framed by various biblical types, images and allusions in order to dramatize a specific period in history in terms of divine history. Shakespeare develops the tetralogy’s structure using the structure of the Bible, beginning with an image of Genesis and ending with an image of Revelation. The first play, The Tragedy of Richard II, portrays England as a fallen “demi-paradise,” reminiscent of Eden, and Richard as a fallen man, a type of Adam whose tragic fall creates the need for a redeemer of England, as reccounted in the providential history of Genesis. This redeemer comes to life in his next two plays, The History of King Henry IV, Parts 1 & 2 in the character of Prince Hal, who is depicted later to be “the mirror of all Christian princes.” Henry IV, Part I dramatizes Hal’s gradual “revelation” as that “redeemer” and also introduces Apocalyptic images in order to foreshadow the hardships portrayed in the next two plays. Henry IV, Part 2 “mocks [our] expectations” raised by Hal’s success as one who will “Redeem…time” by allowing the play to linger on as we wait for Henry IV’s imminent death. The tetralogy presents the Fall of man and need for a redeemer, the waiting time (chronos) that must be endured, and the season and fulfillment of that time (kairos) in order to show the audience how to seize their own kairos and live a life worthy of imitation, as Henry V did. -

PARISH OF SKIPTON* HAVE reserved for this parish, the most interesting part of my subject, a place in Wharfdale, in order to deduce the honour and fee of Skipton from Bolton, to which it originally belonged. In the later Saxon times Bodeltone, or Botltunef (the town of the principal mansion), was the property of Earl Edwin, whose large possessions in the North were among the last estates in the kingdom which, after the Conquest, were permitted to remain in the hands of their former owners. This nobleman was son of Leofwine, and brother of Leofric, Earls of Mercia.J It is somewhat remarkable that after the forfeiture the posterity of this family, in the second generation, became possessed of these estates again by the marriage of William de Meschines with Cecilia de Romille. It is likely that is was commissioned by Henry Percy the Ninth Earl of Northumberland (1564-1632), a well known Elizabethan intellectual and cultural figure. He was known as the ‗Wizard Earl‘ because of his scientific and alchemical experiments and his large library. In 1594 Henry Percy married Dorothy Devereux sister of Robert Devereux, Second Earl of Essex. His southern estates were Petworth and Syon House, the latter he acquired through his marriage to Dorothy Devereux. He was a non-Catholic but argued for Catholic toleration and tried to negotiate with James VI of Scotland to reduce Catholic persecution when he became king of England. This did not happen and Henry‘s second cousin and agent Thomas Percy became one of the five conspirators in the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. As a result Henry Percy suspected of complicity and spent the next 17 years in the Tower of London and was financially ruined by a fine of £30,000. -

Francis Bacon, Shakespeare & the Earl of Essex A historical sketch of Francis Bacon’s association with Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex, the Shakespeare Circle, the Essex Rebellion and Essex’s Trial. Author: Peter Dawkins Francis Bacon and his brother Anthony, sons of Sir Nicholas Bacon, Lord Keeper of the Great Seal, and his second wife, Lady Anne (née Cooke), had known Robert and Penelope Devereux from childhood, as they had once been neighbours, the Bacon family living in York House and the Devereux family living next door in Durham House. Also close to York House was Burghley House, home of Sir William Cecil, Lord Burghley, who was married to Lady Mildred (née Cooke), Lady Anne’s sister. From a young age, Francis and Anthony Bacon were often at Burghley House, and, in this way, they also came to know and befriend Philip and Mary Sidney, who were many times left in the care of the Cecils during Sir Henry Sidney’s absences in Ireland during the years 1565-1571. When Walter Devereux, 1st Earl of Essex, died on 22 September 1576, his son Robert, now the 2nd Earl of Essex, became a ward of Sir William Cecil, Lord Burghley, and soon after, in 1577, came to live at Burghley House amongst the Cecil household. That same year (1577) Mary Sidney married Henry Herbert, 2nd Earl of Pembroke, and in 1578 the widowed Lady Essex (Lettice Knollys) married the Queen's favourite, Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester. Leicester was a major patron of poets, and it was at Leicester House that the English Areopagus of poets used to meet during the 1580s. -

For more information, please contact [email protected]. “YOUR UNTHOUGHT OF HARRY”: POLITICAL LEGITIMACY AND THE ECONOMY OF HONOR IN SHAKESPEARE’S HENRIAD by BANDANA SINGH SUBMITTED TO SCRIPPS COLLEGE IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF ARTS PROFESSOR PRAKAS PROFESSOR KOENIGS 6 DECEMBER, 2017 !1 Shakespeare’s Henriad delves into questions of divine authority, political legitimacy, and kingly identity.1 While it is unknown whether Shakespeare meant for the plays to be understood as a tetralogy, each play sets up the political climate for the subsequent one. However, the Henriad also tracks a pivotal transition in the understanding and composition of kingship. Richard II paints the portrait of a king infatuated with his own divinity. Richard’s incompetency as a ruler is highlighted by two major offenses: killing his uncle Gloucester, and disinheriting his cousin, Henry Bolingbroke, who eventually leads a rebellion against the corrupted king. Richard’s journey from anointed king to deposed mortal captures the dissolution of his fantasy of invincibility and highlights two conflicting viewpoints on the office of kingship in relation to political theology. -

The Second Tetralogy’s Move from Achievements to Badges Ceri Sullivan, Cardiff University In passionate response to the king’s insistence that the crown should get any prisoners of war, Hotspur famously reaches for the moon: By heaven, methinks it were an easy leap To pluck bright honour from the pale-faced moon, Or dive into the bottom of the deep... And pluck up drowned honour by the locks, So he that doth redeem her thence might wear, Without corrival, all her dignities. But out upon this half-faced fellowship! (1 Henry IV 1.3.200-207)1 Most comment follows Northumberland and Worcester in thinking Hotspur is spouting ‘a world of figures/… But not the form of what he should attend’ (1.3.208-9). It gets called empty huffing, suitable for an apprentice’s audition piece, as in the Induction to The Knight of the Burning Pestle (c. 1607). The lines do not seem to require much more: ‘bright honour’ is a conventional collocation in the sixteenth century (here, shining like the disc of the moon) and ‘drowned honour’ is a hairy personification, perhaps a bit muddy from lying around on the bottom. In either state, the honour (a concrete dignity) should be captured and worn by one man alone. The only historical gloss editors offer is a suggestion that ‘half-faced’ may refer to the paired profiles of Philip and Mary on the Marian shilling. Leslie Hotson noted a reference to the Percy badge: the crescent moon.2 However, he did not point out that the Percy silver crescent moon usually encloses a fetterlock (a double manacle, which locks two fists together). -
