SERVICE NOTES Call to worship written by Martha Moore-Keish. The hymn “Praise Ye, Praise Ye the Lord” is based on Psalm 148 and was set to music by Leonard Cooper Blanton, who graduated from Columbia in 1951 and named this tune for the seminary. The language was revised by C. Benton Kline in 1987. “The 23rd Psalm” is adapted from Psalm 23 and set to music by Bobby McFerrin. He dedicated this hymn to his mother. Prayer of Thanksgiving and Intercession composed by William Yoo. All music in the service is reprinted by permission under OneLicense No. A-712628. Please refrain from taking pictures during the Commencement Service. Please refrain from applause until the last degree recipient has been named. Western Theological Seminary awarded 42 Master of Divinity degrees, five Master of Arts degrees, three Master of Theology degrees, three Doctor of Ministry degrees, and President Brown congratulates M.Div. graduate Phil Quinn, three Graduate Certificates in Urban Pastoral Ministry. the youth pastor at Trinity Reformed Church in Holland, MI. Prominent church historian Dr. Justo L. González was the commencement speaker. He spoke to the graduates about the Ascension of Christ, emphasizing Christ’s absence and Christ’s victory. He stressed that there is love in Christ’s absence, allowing us to steward creation and God’s people with the help of the Holy Spirit. “The victory,” he said, “is that Christ is seated with God where we will join Him someday.
