Did You Know? By O livia Patri ck Did you know that the Turkey was going to be our national bird? Our national bird is the Eagle, but it was going to be the turkey. Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson were designing a seal for our country and didn’t know what to put on it. Ben thought there should be a moose on it. Then he thought of putting a turkey on it, but then realized that they ate turkey every . Finally they decided on the Eagle to be our national bird! Did you know that ancient people wore halloween costumes because they thought it would scare away ghosts? Halloween has been around for a long time, but it used to be a dark and creepy day. It used to be a day of death. The ancient people claimed that the day before Halloween, the boundary (connection) between the living and the dead was weak. This meant that ghosts could pass through, so they would dress up to scare them away. Nowadays, we have turned this holiday into a fun and happy holiday. Did you know that there are only two days throughout the year that you can balance an egg on its larger end? Normally you can’t balance an egg on the larger part of it, but on the first day of fall and spring you can. You can only balance it these two times because the Earth's alignment with the sun is perfect. This is called the Vernal Equinox; this happens only twice a year. You should try it sometime! Saint Daniel the Stylite is the Patron Saint of courage and fortitude. He was born in 409 A.D., in Martha, a village in upper Mesopotamia near Samosata, which is present day Turkey. He passed on December 11, 493. He lived to be 84 years old. Saint Daniel lived with his parents for about 15 years. One day he heard his mom talking about how she promised his life to God, which is why they sent him to a monastery. A monastery is a building(s) occupied by a community of monks living under religious vows. His parents' names were Martha and Elias. Fun fact, he stood up on a column for over 30 years! Other than being known for that, Daniel also spent 9 years in a pagan temple attempting to drive out the demons that have threatened the public. After 9 years he had a vision that he saw Saint Simon up on his column with two men in white. Simon spoke and then was born up to heaven leaving Daniel with the two men. He then realized it was a vision of the future, and he decided to follow Simeon and take a stance high above the ground. This is where he spent his last 33 years.

Saint Philip Neri is the patron saint of joy and humor. He was born July 22, 1515 in Florence, Italy. He died May 26, 1595 in Rome, Papal States. His feast day is May 26. He is the son of Francesco di Neri and Lucrezia da Mosciano. At the age of 18, Philip was sent to his uncle, Romolo to help him with business. Philip hoped to inherit his uncle's fortune. A while after going to San Germano he had a religious conversion. After that conversion he didn’t care all that much about things in the world, and in 1533, he decided to live in Rome. While in Rome, he became a tutor in the house of a Florentine aristocrat named Galeotto Caccia. Two years later he began to focus on his own education under the leadership of Augustinians. When he was finished with school, he began helping the sick and poor in his later years . This earned him the title apostle.

Turkey Hand Art Let’s make Turkeys out of our hands! Sounds interesting doesn’t it? So first, you’re going to grab a blank piece of paper and a pencil or colored pencil of your choice. Now you’re going to put your hand on the paper (you may need help from an adult), and you’re going to trace it. Now draw a line to separate the feathers from the body. It should look like the one on the right. Next you will get some colored pencils, markers, or crayons and color inside the lines. Using a darker marker, draw a wing on the side and two little turkey feet! Now, if you would like, have an adult help you glue on a googly eye. Finally, add a waddle and a snood. An additional part you could add is a festive hat. Take a black marker or a color of your choice, and draw a little hat on it’s head. You can also add a little pizzazz (glitter) if you’d like. I hope you had fun making your little turkeys!

Leaf Art For this next craft we will be making leaf art. The first thing you’ll need is a piece of colored paper, leaves of your choice, paint, something to put your paint on/in, and paint brushes. First take your paint. Then grab a leaf, and paint one side of it. Next you should press the side you painted on the paper. You can do any color with any leaf. If you want you could trace the leaves with a sharpie. I hope you enjoyed it!
