The-Eagle-Nugget-2020-21-Edition-1 Eagle Nugget Edition # 1 2020 - 2021 Did You Know? By O livia Patri ck Did you know that the Turkey was going to be our national bird? Our national bird is the Eagle, but it was going to be the turkey. Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson were designing a seal for our country and didn’t know what to put on it. Ben thought there should be a moose on it. Then he thought of putting a turkey on it, but then realized that they ate turkey every Thanksgiving. Finally they decided on the Eagle to be our national bird! Did you know that ancient people wore halloween costumes because they thought it would scare away ghosts? Halloween has been around for a long time, but it used to be a dark and creepy day. It used to be a day of death. The ancient people claimed that the day before Halloween, the boundary (connection) between the living and the dead was weak. This meant that ghosts could pass through, so they would dress up to scare them away. Nowadays, we have turned this holiday into a fun and happy holiday. Did you know that there are only two days throughout the year that you can balance an egg on its larger end? Normally you can’t balance an egg on the larger part of it, but on the first day of fall and spring you can. You can only balance it these two times because the Earth's alignment with the sun is perfect. This is called the Vernal Equinox; this happens only twice a year. You should try it sometime! Eagle Nugget Edition # 1 2020 - 2021 Thanksgiving Sports By Jack Ekdahl Thanksgiving sports games are a tradition to many households across the country. This year there are many football games being played during Thanksgiving. They include NFL games, which are: ● Lions vs Texans ● Cowboys vs Washington ● Ravens vs Steelers Those games are the main sports games across the country. In many homes after everyone eats Thanksgiving dinner and interacts with their family, they go watch football games. Thanksgiving football games have dated back to 1876, (right after football was invented). The first Thanksgiving NFL game was November 25, 1920. Every year the Detroit Lions have hosted a Thanksgiving game since 1934, and a few games hosted by the Dallas Cowboys in 1966, 1975, and 1977. Since 2001 teams have started to wear throwback jerseys on Thanksgiving day. It has been seen numerous times since then, which includes the Dallas Cowboys who started it. Detroit has continued the throwback jerseys, which they wear their first jerseys the team has had. Dallas and Detroit have started the Thanksgiving games for the NFL, while many other teams are wanting to, or starting to play on Thanksgiving. Many colleges have started the tradition of playing football on Thanksgiving, most recently Yale and Princeton. Summer Sports Many Bishop Baraga students have do ne some fun activities over the summer! We are going to include two of the students, which are Mason Johnson in 6th grade and Payten Skowten in 5th grade. Mason Johnson did a fifty mile boat race which was across Cheboygan River, Mullett Lake, Burt Lake, and Indian River, and he took 3rd place! Payten did a six week hockey camp at Petoskey Ice Arena. The camp was with a former Detroit Red Wings player. It was nine hours a day, four days a week, and they worked on skills such as target passing, power skating, and puck control. Eagle Nugget Edition # 1 2020 - 2021 Fall Sports Multiple students from our schoo l did fall sports. We are going to include Hugh Ecker in 1st grade and Rylee Velandia in Kindergarten. Hugh Ecker did hockey at the Cheboygan Ice Rink, and he also played with Matthew Atkins. The hockey season from the fall to February. Next we have Rylee who did swimming lessons at Gaylord Otsego Sportsplex. She is in level one swimming lessons, and her swimming lessons take place October 4th to December 6th. Updates and School Happenings By: Parson Schryer ● The newspaper staff hopes everyone had a great first day of in-person school! ● We hope everyone had a Safe Halloween! ● You can start getting your wreaths now! Eagle Nugget Edition # 1 2020 - 2021 The Real Charlie Brown By Will Bouldin Charles Schulz was the creator and editor for “Peanuts”, the animated comic strip, most famously showing “Charlie Brown”. Charles Schulz was the creator but not the inspiration for “Charlie Brown”. A man by the name of Charlie Francis Brown was. His dog McGregor was also the inspiration for Snoopy. McGregor and Snoopy were both depressed, and they both sat on top of their dog houses. McGregor was a German Shepard, unlike Snoopy who was a beagle. Charlie Monroe did not actually voice Charlie Brown in the cartoon specials, but Peter Robins did. In 1979, Charlie Brown was a sandy-haired, 53 year-old man. He was once accused of sassing a police officer because he said his name was ”Charlie Brown”. He was also disappointed with how the cartoon Charlie Brown looked, so he said, “Couldn’t you make him look a little more like Steve Canyon or Superman?”. He worked with juvenile delinquents, and he had to retire due to kidney cancer. Charlie Francis Brown died of kidney cancer in December, 1985. He was so famous because of the character Charlie Brown, and kids still watch those animated holiday specials today. Many of those specials have become a tradition for many families on Thanksgiving and many other holidays. All of this information has come from Pioneer Press, April 17, 1979. Eagle Nugget Edition # 1 2020 - 2021 Sacagawea By Will Bouldin Lemhi Shoshone, also known as Sacagawea, was a Native American woman who helped Merryweather Lewis and William Clark translate and navigate the Louisiana Purchase. She also carried her infant son when she traveled with the 40 people deployed. On their journey, only one died. The rest survived thanks to her. The 40 men were deployed to create “an empire of liberty” (meaning a large area of freedom) for President Jefferson. All information in this article is from Gingrich 360. Many people don't know that the day after Thanksgiving is American Heritage day.The Native American Heritage day did not become a holiday until 2008.The holiday is to encourage you to native american voice and foster pride in the vibrant and layered heritage. We are encouraged to honor and recognize Native Americans as the first people of this nation and to celebrate both their cultural heritage and integral importance to our past, our present, and our future. Growing up in Northern Michigan, Zach was like a normal Michigander, spending his time enjoying outdoor activities, sports, and spending time with friends and family. After graduating from Pellston High School in 2006, Zach joined the Navy at 18 years old. Zach spent a total of 6 years in the Navy, serving in Afghanistan in 2010 - 2011 while on active duty, then as a part of the reserves while attending school at Delta College in Saginaw, Michigan. During his time in Saginaw, Zach could be seen hanging out with Mr. Closs, his childhood friend. He is also the Godfather to Mr. Closs’s daughter, Ryleigh. During Zach’s time in the Navy, he held the job of a builder, constructing different items necessary for military operations. In a virtual interview with Mr. Marsh, he stated that some of the main reasons for going into the military were the influence of his father and grandfather, as well as the need to want to serve his country. Zach also mentioned that his experience in the Navy taught him a lot about himself and was one of the most rewarding experiences of his life. Zach now lives in Middleville, Michigan, working as an estimator for a mid sized residential construction company.

Their leadership came from the religious congregations of Brownist English Dissenters who had fled the volatile political environment in the East Midlands of England for the relative calm and tolerance of Holland in the Netherlands. Concerned with losing their cultural identity, the group later arranged with English investors to establish a new colony in North America. The colony, established in 1620, became the second successful English settlement (after the founding of Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607) and later the oldest continuously inhabited British settlement in what was to become the United States of America. The Pilgrims' story of seeking religious freedom has become a central theme of the history and culture of the United States. History Separatists in Scrooby The core of the group that would come to be known as the Pilgrims were brought together by a common belief in the ideas promoted by Richard Clyfton, a Brownist parson at All Saints' Parish Church in Babworth, Nottinghamshire, between 1586 and 1605.
