Fraternity and Sorority leaders and university administrators recognize the interest in expanding the LIU Brooklyn Greek community. In order to effectively manage this expansion, the Greek Life Expansion Committee (GLEC) sets forth the folloWing guidelines for interested organizations. THE GREEK LIFE EXPANSION PROCESS INCLUDES SEVEN COMPONENTS: 1) A letter of intent from the group leader(s). 2) A complete list of interested individuals (Must have a minimum of five (5) students interested in the organization). a. The list should have the full names of each person, student identification number, Grade Point Average (must be no loWer than 2.5), phone number, date of birth and e-mail address. 3) A letter of support from the potential Faculty/Staff Advisor from LIU Brooklyn. 4) A copy of the organizations Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). 5) A Certificate of Insurance- $1,000,000 in liability insurance. 6) A copy of the organizations history accompanied With the contact information from the inter/national expansion office or executive director. 7) Submit all aforementioned items to: Student Life & Leadership Development- Office of Greek Life Attn: NatasHa A. Lewis, Director of Greek Life 1 University Plaza- Metcalfe 311 Brooklyn, N.Y. 11201 Once the required information is received, the GLEC will meet to discuss the organization and schedule a time for the organizations representatives to present to the committee. Applications must be submitted to Student Life & Leadership Development, Office of Greek Life by September 15th (during the Fall semester) in order to be considered for approval in the Spring semester. Additionally, applications must be submitted by February 15th (during the Spring semester) to be considered for approval in the Fall semester. The GLEC meets once a month to go over all of the applications submitted and to hear from organization representatives regarding the nature of their submission. Lewis at (718) 780- 4354 or e-mail [email protected]. 2 | Page Greek Organization Compliance Procedures Each Greek Letter Organization at LIU Brooklyn must comply With the policies and procedures from the Office of Greek Life. If any organization chooses not comply With the policies beloW, said organization Will not be able to be an active Fraternity/ Sorority at LIU Brooklyn. ORGANIZATION ACTIVE STATUS • All Fraternities and Sororities at LIU Brooklyn must register online or in-person prior to the second Week of the Fall semester per academic school-year. (See Appendix) o The registration form Will be available for submission at the end of each Spring semester after chapter elections have been held. The Executives as Well as the Advisor Will receive the form via e-mail. The deadline for all registration forms for Fraternities and Sororities is the Friday of the second Week in September. • Fraternities/ Sororities who aspire to hold Membership Intake (Formal Rush) in either the Spring or Fall semester must sign the Membership Intake Intent Contract, Which will be provided at the end of the Fall and Spring semester. This contract Will have the timeline for each semester and must be signed prior to any interest meetings are held. (See Appendix) • Members must maintain a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher. To maintain active status on the LIU Brooklyn campus. Each organization must also maintain a cumulative chapter GPA of a 2.5 to receive funding from the respective governing councils (this excludes the Professional Greek organizations that receive funding as separate organizations under the Student Government Association). • Only LIU Brooklyn students can join the chapters that are chartered under LIU Brooklyn. MAINTAING MEMBERSHIP All active members from each organization must be registered With Student Life and Leadership Development, Office of Greek Life prior to participating in any chapter programs, intake or represent on any Fraternity/ Sorority committees. Organizations that fall under a National governing council, I.e: IFC, NPC, NPHC, NALFO, NMCG etc. must function under the rules of the council and participate in joint ventures With the organizations Within said council. At no time shall a person Who is a part of any of the aforementioned councils join an organization in more than one council. This excludes the Professional Greek Council. • The PGC is composed of the Fraternities/ Sororities that have a mission dedicated to a professional career field. Thus, the President and Vice-President of Phi Delta Chi, Lambda Kappa Sigma and Chi Eta Phi Will all service as the Professional Greek Council. (See appendix) 3 | Page Greek Organization Compliance Procedures The Membership Intake Process (MIP) is the activity in Which Greek lettered organizations expand the chapters’ membership through the organizations nationally recognized process. All nationally recognized processes are conducive to the quality of the aspiring members and should not cause strife or degrading practices. Therefore, HAZING IS A FEDERAL OFFENSE. Any aspirant seeking membership should report any incidents of hazing to the Office of Student Affairs or the Office of Greek Life (located in M-311). All hazing activities Will be subject to judicial sanctions under the LIU Brooklyn Campus Freedoms and Responsibilities Act, as Well as through the local authorities. Organizations that are suspected to be involved in any hazing allegations Will be placed on a mandatory cease and desist (all activities, MIP and recruitment Will be stopped) While a formal investigation takes place. MEMBERSHIP INTAKE PROCESS GUIDE • Step 1: Each Greek organization has to be registered including the submission of the chapter roster, as Well as the Certificate of Insurance (LIU Brooklyn must be named the additional insured) to the Director of Greek Life. • Step 2: The Membership Intent Contract must be signed by the Chapter President, Initiation Chair and Chapter Advisor no later than the second Week of each semester. Timeline Will be on the contract. • Step 3: The full names, date of birth, student identification numbers, phone numbers and e- mail addresses of the prospective/aspiring members must be submitted at least two weeks (with flexibility) prior to starting the Membership Intake Process (See Appendix for MIP roster sheet). All prospective members must be a full time LIU Brooklyn student With a 2.5 GPA or higher and have at least 24 credits. Transfer students must have at least 12 credits from LIU Brooklyn in addition to the 12 or more credits transferred into the University. • Step 4: All potential members, a chapter representative and advisor must attend the mandatory hazing meeting With the Director of Greek Life and Dean of Student Affairs prior to starting the Membership Intake Process i.e.: Formal Rush. This meeting shall take place at least 3-5 days prior to starting the Membership Intake Process. Further the meeting Will be held after the MIP roster has been submitted and aspirants have been cleared to move forWard With the process. • Step 5: Reserve the organizations neW member presentations, I.e: pinning ceremony, neW member shoWs etc. With the Office of Student Life and Leadership Development if it Will be held on the campus of LIU Brooklyn (if applicable). • Step 6: All members (including neW members) must attend tWo (2) in-services With the Office of Greek Life. *Failure to comply with any of the aforementioned steps may cause your chapter to loose MIP privileges and possibly lead to the suspension of the chapter at LIU Brooklyn. 4 | Page MembersHip Has Its Privileges: Fraternities & Sororities at LIU Brooklyn LIU Brooklyn has a number of Fraternities and Sororities ranging from community service based to cultural to professional Greek organizations.
