One of the major achievements of the Flora is having a complete account of all the Mono cotyledons. These are found in Volumes 6 (1997 – all monocots except the grasses) and 7 (1995 – the grasses) of the Flora. One of the main aims of publishing the Flora of Ethiopia and Eritrea was to stimulate further research in the region. This challenge was taken by the authors (with important input also from Odd E. Stabbetorp) in 2003 when the first edition of ‘Flowers of Ethiopia and Eritrea: Aloes and other Lilies’ was published (a book now out of print). The project was supported through the NUFU (Norwegian Council for Higher Education’s Programme for Development Research and Education) funded Project of the University of Oslo, Department of Biology, and Addis Ababa University, National Herbarium in the Biology Department. What you have at hand is a second updated version of ‘Flowers of Ethiopia and Eritrea: Aloes and other Lilies’.

In this work, we seek to evaluate the direct and delayed effects of the ethanol extracts of this plant on vinegar fly (Drosophila melanogaster), an excellent laboratory model. The treatment was carried out by ingestion on second-stage larvae (L2) and then we evaluated the impact of this treatment on mortality, development, sexual behaviour, on female's oviposition choice, fecundity, and fertility of adults. The results showed that mortality rates can reach 100% after 15 days of treatment as we recorded an acceleration of the flies' development. After treatment, we observed incomplete nuptial courtship and a significant decrease in eggs laid number and larvae number of the first generation treated. This study indicates that D. maritima ethanolic extract has a neurotoxic property, our results confirmed the presence of toxic secondary metabolites in the extract studied. Keywords fruit fly, mating, Mediterranean plant, reproduction, toxicity 1. Introduction this aspect, and more particularly on the use of spontaneous species in traditional medicine (Hammiche and Gueyouche In recent years, natural products have drawn the 1988).

College for Women, Tirunelveli, India. 2Department of Botany, The MDT Hindu College, Tirunelveli, India. Abstract: Geophytes exhibit great diversity in their growth, morphology and developmental biology, and physiological response to environmental factors. Taxonomic studies and classification of geophytes, of either known or newly introduced species, are important. The studies on ornamental geophytes are greatly expanded. Tirunelveli district has a diverse geophytic flora and these resources not fully explored. Hence present study aimed to document the geophytes in the Tirunelveli Corporation area, Tamil Nadu. During the course of the present study, field trips were carried out to identify, document, and characterize the geophytes grown in the study area. Totally 76 species of geophytes were recorded in the study area. The species belonged to 29 families and 58 genera. Totally 44 ornamental geophytes were grown in home gardens of the study area. Geophytes reported with various growth forms. Of the 76 geophytes, 6 climbers, 1 shrub, 4 trees, and the remaining 65 are herbs. Alocasia sanderiana reported as critically endangered species in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. 20 exotic geophytes were recorded in the field study. The present study accounting for the diversity of geophytes in Tirunelveli corporation area and the results may serve to determine conservation strategies for geophytes in the study area. Keywords: Endemics; Exotics; Geophytes; Medicinal plants; Tirunelveli Corporation Introduction Geophytes were defined by Raunkiaer (1934) as The ornamental geophytes significantly contri- plants with an underground perennation organ bute to the global flower industry (Benschop et and leaves that die back annually.

This is the first record of this genus occurring in southern Africa. The new species (V. zebrina) was collected and illustrated some 50 years ago, but never validly published. We here provide data on its morphol- ogy, ecology, and distribution. Keywords: Drimia indica, Hyacinthaceae, taxonomy, Urgineoideae, Vera-duthiea Introduction Although generic circumscriptions within the Hyacinthaceae subfamily Urgineoideae (= Scilloideae tribe Urgineae) have been contentious in recent decades (see Martínez-Azorín et al. 2013, 2017, Crouch & Martínez-Azorín 2015 for context), an ongoing revision of the Urgineoideae (M.

Our studies support the establishment of a new urgineoid genus, Zingela gen. nov., to accommodate a species (Z. pooleyorum) collected and illustrated some 50 years ago, but never validly published. We here provide data on its morphology, ecology, and distribution. Keywords: Drimia, Hyacinthaceae, taxonomy, Urgineoideae, Zingela Introduction Hyacinthaceae sensu APG (2003) includes ca. 700–1000 species of bulbous plants mostly occurring in Africa, Europe, and Asia, with a single genus, Oziroë Rafinesque (1837: 53), in South America (Speta 1998a, b, APG 2003, Martínez- Azorín et al.
