    Festivus Day Was Celebrated 31 Years Before “Seinfeld” Made It Famous (Video) Festivus is held on December 23 each year. In a 1997 episode of the popular television comedy, Seinfeld, Festivus was brought to the masses when Frank Costanza (played by Jerry Stiller) explains he invented Festivus in response to the commercialism of Christmas. Its slogan is “A Festivus for the rest of us.” Seinfeld Scriptwriter Dan O’Keefe’s family had been celebrating their idea of Festivus since 1966. The holiday became part of popular culture when he introduced it in a 1997 episode of the comedy sitcom, Seinfeld. The holiday’s celebration, as it was shown on Seinfeld, includes a Festivus dinner, an aluminum “Festivus pole,” practices such as the “Airing of Grievances” and “Feats of Strength,” and the labeling of easily explainable events as “Festivus miracles.” Festivus traditions derived from the television episode and the original creator have been combined over the years. The Festivus pole is an unadorned aluminum pole displayed in the home. In the O’Keefe household, there was no Festivus pole, but instead, a clock was placed in a bag and nailed to the wall. Festivus dinner is served during the evening. Find “red” food such as spaghetti and meatballs or meatloaf. Traditionally the meal should be rich and red. Even spaghettios would work in a pinch. Side dishes can include tuna on toast, turkey chili, airline peanuts and pretzels. The menu is not set in stone, but alcohol is recommended. The Airing of Grievances occurs during Festivus dinner. Each person takes turns describing how the others have disappointed him or her over the past year.

    International Journal of Communication 13(2019), 4960–4982 1932–8036/20190005 The Elephant and the Bird: Republican Candidates’ Use of Strategy and Issue Framing in Twitter During the 2016 Republican Presidential Primaries DROR WALTER1 Georgia State University, USA YOTAM OPHIR University at Buffalo, State University of New York, USA Studies have demonstrated an increase in the use of strategy framing in coverage of political campaigns over the years, and during campaign cycles. Despite increases in politicians’ and voters’ use of social media, very little is known about the use of framing in e-campaigns. This study examines Republican presidential candidates’ Twitter activity during the 2016 primaries (more than 22,000 tweets). We find that only two candidates, Donald Trump, and John Kasich, have followed the news media tendency to emphasize strategy over issues. Also, candidates dedicated more than a third of their Twitter activity to updating followers on events and the campaign. Using time-series analysis, we found that the use of framing was dynamic over time, with issue framing increasing around debates and strategy around voting days. This study contributes to our understanding of the use of social media as a complementary and alternative method for direct communication between candidates and their voters. I had an encyclopedic knowledge of the Scream series and had lost count of how many times I had watched and rewatched. I considered Wes Craven one of my heroes. The topper? Scream 4 had filmed in my town and many a late night was spent sitting on a sidewalk across the street watching them film. Yes, I would review Scream 4 .     (Slip Opinion) Religious Seasonal Decorations in Federal Government Buildings The Public Buildings Service of the General Services Administration may, consistent with fiscal law and the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause, broaden its policy govern- ing the purchase and display of seasonal decorations in the public spaces of federal properties to allow for the display of religiously significant seasonal decorations that are reasonably calculated to improve employee morale. January 15, 2021 MEMORANDUM OPINION FOR THE GENERAL COUNSEL GENERAL SERVICES ADMINISTRATION The Public Buildings Service (“PBS”) of the General Services Admin- istration (“GSA”) maintains a policy governing the purchase and display of seasonal decorations on federal properties under GSA’s jurisdiction, custody, or control. The current policy prohibits the purchase or display of any “religiously significant” seasonal decoration in the public spaces of such properties. The policy identifies certain “religiously significant” items, such as a cross, menorah, or crèche, and identifies other items that are not “religiously significant,” such as a Christmas tree or Santa Claus. Your office has asked whether these restrictions are compelled by fiscal law or by the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause, and whether there are circumstances in which GSA may or must permit the display of “reli- giously significant” decorations, whether purchased by GSA, other federal agencies, or federal employees. These questions implicate long-standing and long-accepted practices by which the federal government has recog- nized and accommodated the religious beliefs of the citizenry. We conclude that GSA may, consistent with fiscal law and the First Amendment, broaden its policy to allow for the display of religiously significant seasonal decorations that are reasonably calculated to improve employee morale.
