Taumberland House Asperton Road | Wigtoft | Boston | Lincolnshire | PE20 2PS TAUMBERLAND HOUSE Taumberland House Asperton Road | Wigtoft | Boston | Lincolnshire | PE20 2PS TAUMBERLAND HOUSE SELLER INSIGHT We have enjoyed glorious views over the garden and through the trees across open fields – it’s very private and peaceful, and there is so much visiting wildlife including woodpeckers and muntjacs. The house itself is flooded with light as a lot of the rooms are dual aspect.” Quality materials have been employed throughout the property with the use of solid oak a particular feature. “The staircase, all the skirtings and architraves, the kitchen units, and the garden room are solid oak, with the internal doors oak veneer. The bespoke kitchen has Corian worktops, an integrated dishwasher, and all electric Britannia range-style cooker. There’s also a built-in Tapworks water softener with a filtered water tap. The main bathroom with the big free-standing bath and separate shower has travertine tiling and the en suite has a shower.” “The integral double garage might make a granny annex (subject to planning) as there is already plumbing in the utility room next door unless, of course, someone wanted to be more adventurous and convert the barns!” “There used to be a cottage on the site but that was raised to the ground and a new house built in its place which was completed in 2008. More recently, the new barn complex replaced some old outbuildings, and the two stables were built for the horses, along with the creation of the paddocks and menage. It’s a versatile design deliberately making life easy – the stables open into a turn-out paddock which then links with the grazing paddocks so the horses can come and go as they please without having to catch them and shut them in at night.” “The manège is 40 x 20 metres and fully drained with a membrane and hardcore topped with silica sand and rubber, so there is no flooding whatsoever however torrential the rain. The paddocks are enclosed by post and rail fencing and have mains water automatically filling troughs for easy management.” “The games room and gym are fully insulated and the log-burner in the fireplace heats radiators in both rooms which are fully insulated. The adjoining two-storey barn was built with potential for further use in mind – perhaps creating a large separate annex (subject to planning). There is a mezzanine level at present accessed by a ladder, that we use for storage.” Storage is not an issue in this property. “There is plenty of storage here with huge spaces above the double garage and the boot room. We have a separate utility room as well as a boot room – both have sinks and fitted cupboards. Outside, there is the big barn and a separate single garage, and the tack room adjoining the stables.” “The riding is outstanding here with no need for going on major roads as there are lots of tracks, and there are all sorts of equestrian places not too far afield if you want to compete.” “Swineshead is about three miles away and seems to have everything we need including a medical centre, a Co-op and post office, and various farm shops.”* * These comments are the personal views of the current owners and are included as an insight into life at the property. They have not been independently verified, should not be relied on without verification and do not necessarily reflect the views of the agent. KEY FEATURES In a very peaceful, rural setting, an immaculately presented, substantial, six bedroomed, equestrian property sitting on three acres (sts) featuring mature horse chestnuts and oak trees, enjoys the big skies of South Lincolnshire and far-reaching views across arable fenland. It stands on land known as Taumberland, hence its name, and is approached through a very impressive, curving brick wall, about 3 miles from the villages of Swineshead, Bicker and Kirton, with the market town of Boston around 6 miles northeast. Grantham is just over half an hour’s drive to the west, and both Newark-on-Trent with its castle on the river, and the city of Lincoln with its castle and cathedral high on the hill, are about 45 mins away. The A1 is accessed at Stamford (45 mins south), Grantham (30 mins west), and Newark (45 mins north), the latter two with direct rail services to London. For commuting to London, the fastest trains from Grantham to Kings Cross take just over an hour. Schools A selection of primary schools is within the locality with Ofsted rated Good ones at Kirton, and Bicker (both 3 miles away), whilst there is also a wide range of excellent state secondary education in the area. Closest is Thomas Cowley High School rated Good in Donington 5 miles away, whilst the well-reputed grammars in Spalding (the High for girls rated Outstanding, and the Grammar for boys rated Good) are only about 10 miles away. In Sleaford, also around 20 minutes away, there are further highly sought-after grammar schools: Carre’s Grammar School, and Kesteven & Sleaford High School (for Girls), as well as St. George’s Academy, all rated Good by Ofsted. Grantham, about half an hour away, has excellent schools too, such as The King’s School (for boys) and Kesteven and Grantham Girls’ School which are extremely highly regarded state grammar schools rated Outstanding by Ofsted. • I Sauh a Tour on a Toft, Tryelyche I-Maket', Part Two: on Place-Names in -Toft in England
`I sauh a tour on a toft, tryelyche i-maket', part two: on Place-Names in -toft in England Peder Gammeltoft University of Copenhagen The place-name element -toft has received only marginal treatment in the British Isles. Apart from Bengt Holmberg’s thesis and the present writer’s overview of the Scottish toft place-name material,1 this group of place- names has been the focus of very little research, despite the fact that the element may be used to throw new light on the complex linguistic situation in Viking Age and post- Conquest England. The place-name element toft is ultimately of Scandinavian origin, having been transferred into the languages and onomastica of England and Scotland through either Old Danish (ODa) toft, f., or Old Norse (ON) topt, f. I shall not elaborate further on the origin of this place-name element, as this has already been dealt with in my above-mentioned article on the subject. As a place- name element of Scandinavian origin, toft is part of the large body of Viking Age place-names which include such prominent and well-researched Scandinavian place-name elements as bý, þorp and þveit. One complicating factor in the study of the place-name element toft is the early borrowing of toft into English. It occurs as an appellative as early as 1001 in English in the phrase healf þæt land æt suðham innur and uttur on tofte and on crofte (`half the land at Southam, including homestead as well as 1B. Introduction 1.1 Wigtoft Conservation Area was designated prior to 1986 and the following appraisal is intended to clearly define and analyse its current character and appearance. This will provide a sound basis for both development plan policies and development control decisions, as well as the Wigtoft Conservation Area Management Plan (yet to be produced). This will contain policies and proposals designed to secure the preservation and enhancement of the area. 1.2 This Appraisal will initially detail the location of the village and its regional position in order to provide the geographical context for the Conservation Area. It will then provide an outline of the history of the development of the village up to the present day in order to show how this has shaped the development of the settlement. 1.3 An outline of the archaeological significance of Wigtoft will be provided with particular reference to its known buried historical deposit. Views and the character of historical buildings will also be assessed.

  • Illegitimate in Lincolnshire, England: the Children of Thomas Bradley
Illegitimate in Lincolnshire, England: The Children of Thomas Bradley ProGen 46 Family Narrative 25 March 2021 - Nicole Dyer From 1845 – 1901 5.3% of births in England were illegitimate children.1 Although it was never common in England for children to be born out of wedlocK, it seemed common for some poor families. Thomas Bradley of Swineshead, Lincolnshire was the bastard son of an illegitimate woman. Though he never married, Thomas fathered at least four of his own illegitimate children, with two women who were also of illegitimate birth. This microcosm of Lincolnshire illegitimacy points to a trend that poverty and illegitimacy in parents bred more of the same for children in the early 19th century.2 Figure 1. Pinchbeck Parish (Lincolnshire England), Baptisms 1813-1837, p. 9, no. 65, Thomas Bradley, 4 Nov 1813. Thomas Bradley was baptized in PinchbecK, Lincolnshire, England on 4 November 1813, the “bastard son of Mary Bradley,” a servant.3 Lincolnshire is in eastern England bordering the North Sea on its coastline. When Thomas was about seven years old, Mary gave birth to another son out of wedlocK on 7 October 1821 named Pearce Sumpter Bradley. Pearce was born in the parish of Sutterton, eight miles north of PinchbecK. He was baptized on 28 December 1821 in Swineshead, another five miles north.4 Thomas Sumpter, a Swineshead farmer, was ordered to pay the parish of Sutterton for the upkeep of Mary Bradley’s child.5 Presumably Thomas Sumpter was the father of Pearce Sumpter Bradley; and possibly the father of Thomas Bradley as well.
