This top middle school is named after Lawton Chiles, former U.S. Senator and Governor of the State of Florida. I and the entire staff are committed to upholding the name and reputation of Governor Chiles. Lawton Chiles Middle School is very happy to welcome you and your child to our prestigious school and our award-winning Cambridge Magnet Program. Our Cambridge Program was a recipient of the Merit Schools of Excellence Award from Magnet Schools of America for 2020. This program has allowed our school accountability points for improvement every year as well as an increase in our school grade. With that being said, it is now time to celebrate as your child, our student, will now embark on a journey which will prepare them for the future. Lawton Chiles Middle School will ensure your child is prepared with the tools and resources they need so they can be successful in our current and future world. Our commitment is to instill in them Personal Integrity, Civic Responsibility, Work Place Literacy, and Academic Achievement. These skills will assist your child in continuing to be successful throughout their academic years. We will further enrich them with technology skills that are needed in our digital world, through a blended learning curriculum from our highly effective faculty and staff. Our school has been able to provide our students with various technological resources such as access to multiple Computer Labs, one-to-one Devices, Interactive Boards, On-line Programs/Curriculum, and the SAMR Model. We are confident that your child’s middle school experience at LCMS will be one that includes fun learning, technology, student achievement, acceleration with high school and college courses, as well as an opportunity to grow socially in a safe learning environment. As we embark on this new school year via online learning we are eager to help our students through this phase by creating routines in order to help our students feel comfortable and safe during online learning. At LCMS, our students are properly prepared to be 21st Century thinkers using the 4 C’s: critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication to develop their decision-making and problem solving skills. Using project-based learning and rigorous content, our teachers challenge all students to explore real-world problems and engage in meaningful learning. The teachers and administrative team hold the highest standards for all students at LCMS. High expectations for student Citizenship, Cooperation, Fairness, Honesty, Integrity, Kindness, Pursuit of Excellence, Respect, and Responsibility, help create a positive learning environment where all students feel enthusiastic about their school experiences (Values Matter). It is our goal that each child will reach their greatest potential both academically and behaviorally, along with being fully prepared for success in college and in their careers. Biography Lawton Mainor Chiles, Jr. (April 3, 1930 – December 12, 1998) was an American politician from the U.S. state of Florida. He served as a United States Senator from 1971 to 1989 and as Governor of Florida from 1991 to 1998. A Korean War veteran, Chiles later returned to Florida for law school and eventually opened his own private practice in 1955. Three years later, Chiles entered politics with a successful bid for the Florida House of Representatives in 1958, as a member
