  • OAG Hearing on Interactions Between NYPD and the General Public Submitted Written Testimony
OAG Hearing on Interactions Between NYPD and the General Public Submitted Written Testimony Tahanie Aboushi | New York, New York I am counsel for Dounya Zayer, the protestor who was violently shoved by officer D’Andraia and observed by Commander Edelman. I would like to appear with Dounya to testify at this hearing and I will submit written testimony at a later time but well before the June 15th deadline. Thank you. Marissa Abrahams | South Beach Psychiatric Center | Brooklyn, New York As a nurse, it has been disturbing to see first-hand how few NYPD officers (present en masse at ALL peaceful protests) are wearing the face masks that we know are preventing the spread of COVID-19. Demonstrators are taking this extremely seriously and I saw NYPD literally laugh in the face of a protester who asked why they do not. It is negligent and a blatant provocation -especially in the context of the over-policing of Black and Latinx communities for social distancing violations. The complete disregard of the NYPD for the safety of the people they purportedly protect and serve, the active attacks with tear gas and pepper spray in the midst of a respiratory pandemic, is appalling and unacceptable. Aaron Abrams | Brooklyn, New York I will try to keep these testimonies as precise as possible since I know your office likely has hundreds, if not thousands to go through. Three separate occasions highlighted below: First Incident - May 30th - Brooklyn - peaceful protestors were walking from Prospect Park through the streets early in the day. At one point, police stopped to block the street and asked that we back up.

Newfolk NDiF: Making a Big Apple Crumble...Chapter 1 New Directions in Folklore 6 June 2002 Newfolk :: NDiF :: Issue 6 :: Chapter 1 :: Page 1:: Page 2 :: Chapter 2 :: References Making a Big Apple Crumble: The Role of Humor in Constructing a Global Response to Disaster1 Bill Ellis Chapter One: Introduction On the morning of September 11, 2001, terrorists associated with Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida, a fundamentalist Islamic political movement, hijacked four American jetliners. Two were crashed into the twin towers of New York's World Trade Center, causing them to collapse with catastrophic loss of life. A third was crashed into the Pentagon, costing an additional 189 lives, while passengers on a fourth evidently attacked the hijackers, causing the plane to crash in a rural area in western Pennsylvania with the loss of all 44 persons aboard. Much of the drama was played out live on national television, including the crash of the second plane into the South Tower at 9:03 AM and both towers' collapse, at 10:05 and 10:30 AM respectively. The tragedy sent shock waves through American culture not felt since the equally public tragedy of the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger in 1986. To be sure, the September 11 terrorist attacks were preceded by other anxiety-producing terrorist events: previous acts such as the 1985 Achille Lauro hijacking and the 1988 terrorist bombing of Pan Am 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland had inspired previous cycles of disaster humor. However, neither the first terrorist bombing at the World Trade Center in 1993 nor the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995 had the international impact of the new attacks.

  • What Brexit Means for Charities and What They Can Do
Keep calm and carry on helping people: What Brexit means for charities and what they can do September 2016 Ciaran Price Policy Officer Directory of Social Change 352 Holloway Road London N7 6PA [email protected] © Directory of Social Change 2015 1 Contents 1. Introduction 2. The political situation 3. The economic situation 4. The social situation 5. The legal situation 6. Conclusion Notes: links to important information and further reading 2 1. Introduction On the morning of Friday 24 June 2016 Europe awoke to the largely unexpected news that the British public had voted (51.9% to 48.1%) to leave the European Union after 43 years of membership. The impact was felt instantly with an immediate fall in the value of the pound and global markets sent into turmoil. The UK, the EU, and hundreds and thousands of UK charities and community groups are entering an uncertain period. At the time of writing, there is a crisis in British politics. Until the UK invokes Article 50 of the Treaty of Lisbon, the UK remains a full member of the EU. Constitutional law experts have suggested that legislation may be required before this can happen. Until then, and until British and EU negotiators work out the technicalities of ‘Brexiting’, the UK’s longer-term relationship with the 27-member bloc remains unclear – but we do know that the UK will remain an EU member in the near-term, as there is a two-year (or longer) negotiation process under the treaty. Charities and community groups will no doubt have major concerns about how this affects their ability to continue helping their beneficiaries.
