College Basketball: Home hunting After a five-year trek to Division I, Longwood still seeks men's basketball league to join

Thursday, Nov 08, 2007 - 12:05 AM Updated: 11:12 AM

By JOHN O'CONNOR TIMES-DISPATCH STAFF WRITER

FARMVILLE Longwood University announced five years ago that it intended to reclassify from Division II to Division I. Thus began the Lancers' NCAA-mandated journey of five years to Division I status.

Starting this school year, Longwood is a full-fledged Division I member, the 14th in Virginia. Only one catch, and it's a significant one: The Lancers have no league affiliation. That's particularly problematic in basketball, the school's flagship sport, for NCAA tournament qualification, for scheduling, for the development of rivalries. The Farmville school's other 12 sports also would greatly benefit from league membership. "We have to get that final piece. The frosting on the cake is going to be the conference," said Dr. Patricia P. Cormier, the university president since 1996. "Longwood must find a conference."

The decision

Longwood, as a Division II school, belonged to the Carolinas-Virginia Conference. The Lancers were the only Virginia school in the league, and Longwood became increasingly uncomfortable in that position. "In the Division II arena, we were playing schools no one knew," Cormier said. "I like Division II very much. I have a lot of respect for many Division II schools and what Division II represents. It's a wonderful structure. If you're in the Midwest and you're in Division II, you're in pretty good shape. But in Virginia, Division I is where it's at." Longwood sought greater exposure in Virginia, home of the vast majority of its students and alumni, desired affiliation with academic equals, and studied options. Cormier said the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, a Division II league that includes Virginia Union and Virginia State, wasn't interested. The DIII Old Dominion Athletic Conference, which includes Randolph-Macon and Hampden-Sydney, didn't want a public school, according to Cormier. A Longwood committee of students, faculty, coaches and community representatives recommended Division I. In a letter dated Nov. 12, 2002, Longwood informed the NCAA it intended to reclassify to DI. Longwood has added about $3 million to its annual athletics operating budget since starting its trek to DI, and also has made facilities improvements.

Looking to Big South

Longwood's committee viewed the Big South -- which includes VMI, Radford and Liberty -- as the logical landing spot for Longwood as a Division I school. Big South schools "are closely aligned to us academically, they are closely aligned to us in terms of proximity and travel, and we have other Virginia schools that could play," Cormier said. She said that she visited every Big South member and met with each school president. "I was getting pretty good feedback from the Big South all along," Cormier said. She added that Big South representatives visited Longwood to see the school's athletic facilities and meet administrators.

Football considerations

Football became the Big South's 18th championship sport in 2002. The Big South, with just four football-playing members, geared expansion plans toward schools that play football so the league could gain eligibility for an automatic bid to the Division I-AA playoffs.

Longwood does not play football and has no plan to start a football program.

Big South Commissioner Kyle Kallander said his league was consistent in its discussions with Longwood and never pledged membership to Longwood if and when Longwood became a Division I school. He acknowledged that "various factors" in regard to the Big South's strategic expansion plan changed since Longwood decided it wanted to go Division I.

"I was able to deliver on everything, except when they introduced football," Cormier said of the Big South. "And they didn't introduce football until we had been in this process [toward Division I] for some time."

Last year, Gardner-Webb announced plans to join the Big South full time (the school has been an associate football member since 2002 and will be a full member in 2008) and Presbyterian announced its plan to go Division I and join the Big South in 2008. Each of those schools play football. This year, Stony Brook was added to the Big South as an associate member for football (effective next season).

Reclassification reflection

Cormier says she remains convinced that Division I is the best level for Longwood. "I regret not one minute of going Division I, not one minute," she said. But she added that independent status makes things challenging for her coaches, to recruit and win; and for her athletes, to successfully compete. Would Longwood have upgraded to Division I had she known that in 2007 the Lancers would still be seeking conference membership? Absolutely, she responded without hesitation. However, "I think I would have probably tried to get that [league membership] solidified before, if I had to do it all over again," Cormier said. "I would have been much more attuned to this. It was a little bit of a surprise to me when the Big South shifted their orientation. And maybe I should have seen it coming."

Potential affiliation

Longwood has discussed membership with the Big South, the Atlantic Sun Conference, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and the . Also, it has kept in touch with the Richmond-based Colonial Athletic Association, primarily in the hopes of gaining associate CAA membership in some minor sports. "We've got people we're consulting all the time to say 'How do we do this better? Should we package ourselves differently?'" Cormier said. "So it's not as if we're not trying to do everything we can. I think the conferences we've talked to know that we're very, very sincere. "Nobody has said to us 'You don't have this, you don't have this, you're not putting what you need to into scholarships . . . ' None of that. We're doing all of what we should be doing." Cormier currently views the Atlantic Sun as the best league hope for the Lancers. According to the Atlantic Sun's commissioner, Ted Gumbart, "At this point, and this is in no way an evaluation of Longwood, we're not looking to add anybody."

Path to a league

The route to conference membership is not complicated to Troy Austin, 29, a former Duke defensive lineman and team captain who is in his second year as Longwood's interim athletic director. "For schools our size, as you become more competitive, and you gain more of a profile, conferences look at you and say, 'Well, they would help, they would bring something to our conference,'" Austin said. "The big question we try to answer when we approach a conference is 'What can we do for you?' And that's what they want to know: 'What would you bring to us?'"

Austin uses the example of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Seven seasons of men's basketball success as an independent, including wins over Texas A&M and Texas Tech, influenced the Southland Conference to invite the Islanders to join that league. The Islanders won the Southland's regular-season and tournament titles last season in their first year of membership.

"When they got that chance, they were ready," said Lancers men's basketball coach Mike Gillian.

The hoops coach

Gillian was a George Mason assistant from 1997-2003 and was hired as Longwood's head coach in May of 2003. Without a league affiliation, it's a difficult job, though Gillian's upbeat attitude doesn't reflect that, or the fact that the Lancers are 25-94 since he has been coach.

Gillian, 43 and a Massachusetts native, feels confident in saying Longwood has conducted the reclassification to Division I in an appropriate manner, the basketball program included.

"Here at Longwood now, the things that have happened, the tangible and intangible things that have occurred over the last four years, we have done it. Dr. Cormier has done it. The administration has done it. Athletically, we've done it. Basketball-wise we've done it," Gillian said.

"We've done everything people have asked. Do we deserve to be in a league somewhere right now? There's a reality that we're not, but do we deserve it? I have absolutely zero doubt that we deserve that."

And need that. Scheduling is terrifically demanding for Gillian because almost all college basketball teams are involved in league play during January and February. Independent status means very little home-and-away rhythm to the Lancers' schedule. Longwood's season closes Feb. 22, when most teams are gearing up for the most important parts of their seasons.

The players

Four Longwood basketball players were asked about their school's Division I status and its lack of a conference. Each indicated the Lancers' move to Division I was a major factor in his college decision, and that not being in a league isn't optimal, but also isn't a major factor to them. "Being an independent has its perks," said Dana Smith, a 6-5 junior from Woodbridge. "We can play anybody." The Lancers last season faced Southern California, Providence, Oklahoma and Virginia (all road losses by 30 or more points), and this year play at Indiana, Virginia and Boston College. "Right now, we're building up the reputation of Longwood," said forward Lamar Barrett, a senior from Providence, R.I. These big-time games represent season highlights for Longwood since it does not have the opportunity to compete in a league tourney for an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. In recruiting, Gillian says he tells prospects: "You need to make your decision based on the experience you're going to have, not in the possibility that over your four-year career you might play one game in one [NCAA] tournament that everybody is going to pay attention to." But Gillian acknowledges that he wants to be in a league more than any Lancers recruits. So, can Longwood indefinitely survive independence? "Indefinitely? No," said the coach. "How long? Until it happens."

Wednesday, October 17, 2007 Lancers complete Div. I transition but stuck in independent limbo

By Andy Glockner ESPN.com Most coaches learn quickly that while being good "on paper" is nice, it's what actually happens -- on and off the court -- that counts. It's become hard, though, for Longwood head coach Mike Gillian to separate the theoretical from the actual. On paper, his Lancers have finally completed their five-year transition to Division I and now exist among college's big boys. But without a conference to call home, what's the reality? "Well, there are two answers," said Gillian, whose program is one of three that becomes fully eligible this season. "[On one hand] it feels great, because it's gratifying that at the end of this process, technically speaking … you've done everything they asked of you. Eligibility, recruiting rules, scheduling requirements, compliance. You've handled them."

But here comes the crucial "Yeah, but … "

"Now, let's flip over to the reality side. We've been competing at this level for three years now," Gillian said. "… Technically speaking, it's gratifying because you've done it all right. In reality, you've been living that life for three years."

So, unlike reclassification mates UC Davis (Big West) and Northern Colorado (Big Sky), which will have full conference and postseason eligibility this season, Longwood's Division I arrival remains in independent limbo. It's like finally turning 21, but going to party at the same bar you've been sneaking into since you were 18. Sure, now you're fully legal, but nothing's really changed.

Or has it?

Longwood definitely isn't the same program -- or school -- it was five years ago. There is new infrastructure in place -- a big health and fitness center, new dorms -- that have come in lockstep with the maturation of the athletics program. Hoopswise, there is more recruiting and expense funding. There also is more respect in scheduling, as the Lancers have developed healthy regional rivalries. Most important, there is more talent and depth on the roster, as Gillian manages to lure better players to Farmville, Va., despite the lack of postseason possibilities. It may seem odd for any college coach to de-emphasize the magic of the NCAA Tournament, but when you don't have that to offer, you need to push other angles. "A lot of time we're recruiting against people that are in one-bid leagues," Gillian said. "Are you going to make that [decision] based on the opportunity to play maybe one game in the NCAA Tournament in your four years, or are you going to base that on the chance to play maybe 130 games over the next four years and the kind of player and person you're going to be after that period of time?" However, much like a magician, as soon as the quick-talking, effervescent Gillian has made the NCAA Tournament vanish as a recruiting factor, he makes it reappear as part of his closing pitch. "Now, as soon as I get done telling them that, [I say] this," he said. "Everyone here at Longwood wants that NCAA Tournament bid, that conference championship, as much as you do, so once we get that opportunity,

we have to be ready immediately." That bait-and-pitch technique is working. The improved roster has brought the Lancers a long way from where they were three seasons ago, in the midst of a brutal 1-30 campaign that still resonates. "That was definitely a tough season. It's hard to look back on," said redshirt junior wing Dana Smith, who was a freshman that season. "… We just stuck together as a team, took every win and every loss -- well, that year, it was mainly losses -- but [we tried to] take them as a team and get better every game." What did the one win, over Howard from the MEAC, feel like? "Heaven," Smith said in a still-satisfied tone. These days, basketball heaven's opening its gates a lot more often in Farmville. Two seasons ago, Longwood had nine Division I wins. Last season, there were eight more as the schedule continued to stiffen. The Lancers' RPI improved from 329th to 314th to 307th in that span. Perhaps most notably, given potential conference aspirations, Longwood split home-and-home series with both High Point and Liberty, the second- and third-place teams in the Big South last season, just missing a sweep of HPU. It may be slow, but it's most certainly progress, especially given where the program was.

Now, Gillian is looking for a different type of player than he was five years ago, which is as sure a sign as any of a program's growth. They will be more talented, for sure, but also of a different mind-set. Less explorer, more ensurer.

"Can you be a pioneer in Year 6? Maybe not as much as you could in Year 1," he said. "I'm not interested in pioneers [anymore]. I'm interested in kids who will come here and be ready when the opportunity comes."

When that opportunity will come is anyone's guess. Until then, Longwood will keep growing, keep improving and keep waiting.
