Incurable Psychopaths? Marianne Kristiansson, MD Treatment, comprising pharmacotherapy and an educational program based on cognitive behavior therapy, of four psychopathic, criminal men fulfilling the crite- ria for borderline personality disorder and antisocial personality disorder is de- scribed. The diagnoses were made during a forensic psychiatric evaluation. An estimation of the capacity of the central serotonergic system was performed by analysing the platelet monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity. The pharmacotherapy was combined with an educational program involving strategies for developing better impulse control. All four men had earlier been regarded as resistant to conventional therapy. In the present cases, a combined psychosocial and biolog- ical approach seemed to be effective in developing an increased control of im- pulses, leading to improved coping strategies. Controlled studies are needed in order to clarify whether the described treatment program proves beneficial. Session 4 Personal Safety: Handling taunting/ bullying Rationale Children are often taunted and bullied by their peers, older children and at times by adults. They have a few ways of handling such incidents, ranging from retaliation, complaining to someone in authority, ignoring the taunts and at times, internalizing the damaging message. This can reduce a child’s self- esteem. We need to help children understand that words, like the deeds of a person, describe and tell others about the character and personality of the person doing the taunting. Lastly, it spreads like wildfire through organizations - destroying them from within. Bullying is like a virus – it spreads exponentially when it’s allowed to flourish. Stress the seriousness! Organizations are increasingly talking about engagement, but not everyone is defining and measuring it in the same way. Engagement typically refers to an employee’s job satisfaction, loyalty, and inclination to expend discretionary effort toward organizational goals.1 It predicts individual performance and operates at the most fundamental levels of the organization —individual and line—where the most meaningful impact can be made. Workplace culture is related, though operates on a different level. Culture is a system of values, beliefs, and behaviors that shape how real work gets done within an organization. We employ a labour process lens to explore the rationality of management both engaging in and perpetuating bullying. Labour process theory posits that employee submission to workplace bullying can be a valuable method of managerial control and this article examines this assertion. Based on the qualitative feedback in a large-scale survey of nurses in Ireland, we find that management reframed bullying complaints as deficiencies in the competency and citizenship of employees. Such reframing took place at various critical junctures such as when employees resisted extremely pressurized environments and when they resisted bullying behaviours. We find that such reframing succeeds in suppressing resistance and elicits compliance in achieving organisational objectives. (September, 2018) Fear is the cheapest room in the house, I would like to see you living in better conditions Khwajen Shams Al-Din Muhammed Hafez-E Shirazi, 14th-Century Mystic & Poet YOU ARE NOT ALONE The childhood rhyme, "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me" is far from the truth when it comes to bullying and harassment in the workplace. It is the unrelenting nature of bullying that diminishes and demoralizes those targeted over time. Victims start to feel that there is no escape - no way out. In fact, the dire sense of isolation, rejection, humiliation and fear leaves the victim in a state of distress that can lead to extreme outcomes of severe depression and at times, suicidality. It is no small feat to recover from the worst of these circumstances. If you think that bullying only occurs on the playground, then it is time to rethink the magnitude of the problem. In the WorkSafe BC pamphlet, Reid (2014) defined workplace bullying as "any inappropriate conduct or comment by a person towards a worker that the person knew or reasonably should have known would cause that worker to be humiliated or intimidated.” Silverman (2013), defined bullying as a “systematic aggression and violence targeted towards one or more individuals by one individual or by a group.” Are you a teacher targeted in a social media attack? Maybe you are a military member awaiting medical discharge and remain vulnerable to bullying by peers or superior officers.
