Week 4: Third party products with

For me personally, it’s the addition of third party apps that integrate seamlessly with Evernote that make Evernote my first app of choice. As more features appear especially with iOS and Android, apps that really use Evernote’s power are appearing that just do that ‘one thing’ brilliantly.

This week, we are focusing on ‘Third Party Apps’ that can make a difference to the way you use Evernote and ‘Digital Workflows’ i.e. the systems or processes you use to achieve ultimate digital productivity.

IFTTT IFTTT, otherwise known as If This, Then That is something that I never used until I discovered the process of ‘AUTOMATION’. Keeping this process very simple has made this concept powerful especially if you are ‘time poor’ and looking for ways to SAVE TIME!

Often there are tasks that just need to be done automatically without data needing to be entered every time you do a new task.

IFTTT calls them ‘recipes’ that you create between two apps or tools, this being a ‘trigger’ and an ‘action’.

TIP: You will need to sign up first at https://ifttt.com/ Once you have done this, browse the different recipes or create your own.

There are many recipes that have already been created (why re-create something when it already exists!) Or try creating your own recipes. The great thing is if you create something brilliant, why not share that recipe with social media or even via a blog post/email.

Here are some of the channels that you might like to use to create or browse your recipes from: ❏ ❏ Evernote ❏ iOS ❏ Android ❏ Google Drive ❏ Gmal ❏ Instagram ❏ Facebook ❏ (for finding articles, websites and read later) ❏ OneDrive ❏ LinkedIn ❏ Email ❏ iOS Notifications

2 Here are seven of the recipes that I currently use to help me stay ‘digitally productive’ with my time: (include screenshots)

❏ If a new link by @megsamanda (Twitter) then a new note will be created in Megan Iemma’s Evernote notebook. Often I share lots of articles via Twitter or someone tags me in a ‘tweet’ this ensures that no information is lost.

❏ Create a new note in Evernote with all your tweets from a #tag (twitter). This is brilliant for attending conference events especially trying to keep track of all your tweets or even watching a #chat via Twitter.

❏ New Screenshot from Android Phone will save it to Dropbox. After signing up for a S4 Mini Samsung phone at the start of the year, this is a great shortcut for automatically saving those screenshots in an automatic location. It also is piece of mind in case anything happens to my device.

❏ Save favourited item from Pocket to Evernote. I am learning to use Pocket more for reading about ‘Tech Topics’ and research that I need to follow for my business and this IFTTT recipe has been very useful.

❏ iTunes Receipts to Evernote (via Gmail). Being a technology coach, I shudder to think how much I have spent on iTunes especially over the past 4-5 years on music and apps. At least this then saves them in one place which makes it easier at tax time.

❏ Archive ‘Wordpress Posts to Evernote. If you have a Wordpress site, is is handy to keep all of your blog posts in one place.

❏ When a meeting is added to GCal (Google calendar) automatically create a meeting note in Evernote. Sometimes it is easier if there are some steps that are simplified when you are working, this is one I found very practical to use.

3 Using Zapier Zapier is another automation system with over 200 apps/tools to select from an create ‘zaps’.

The different between Zapier and IFTTT, is that Zapier has four different levels of pricing plans. These range from Free to the Business Plus account which is $99 a month. https://zapier.com/app/settings/plans

A Zap is a link between two apps (a "trigger" and an "action"). Here are two ‘Zaps’ that I have created.

❏ Save new assigned Trello cards to your to OneNote.

❏ Creates a new blog post draft (WordPress) whenever I add a new Evernote note to a specific notebook in Evernote.

Livescribe Pen: Here is the YouTube Channel to learn more about the Livescribe products: https://www.youtube.com/user/nevermissaword

There are several products that integrate with Evernote and there are three different types of pens produced by the Livescribe company.

These include the: Livescribe SmartPen 3 Livescribe Wifi Echo

How the Livescribe pens work? Each of these pens integrate with Evernote by recording what is written (both handwritten and audio) and then exporting the information direct to an Evernote notebook (either automatically or manually).

What will I need to get started? ❏ To use the Livescribe pens, you will need both the pen and the specific Livescribe Notebooks in order for it to work. ❏ Moleskine (Notebooks) has released several notebooks to specifically work with the Livescribe Pens. ❏ With a Livescribe account, you receive an extra 500MB monthly upload for Evernote.

Who this would be good for? ❏ Great for students in class as it records audio and notes at the same time. ❏ For PA’s and EA’s who need to take notes during meetings. ❏ For those in the workplace that can’t type. ❏ For those who love to draw and prefer handwritten notes but need to keep a digital copy. ❏ For those who need to talk and write at the same time to remember things.
