FROM SWEDENBORG to TOLLE Critique with Sloppy Bible Prophecy Theories Since her heyday we have seen a long string of famous New Age teachers: Jane Roberts, Neale Donald Walsch, Elizabeth Clare Prophet, David Spangler, Ken Wilber, Marianne Williamson, Deepak Chopra, JZ Knight, Marilyn Ferguson, James Redfield, Rhonda Byrne and Vancouver-based Eckhart Tolle. As I look back at these leaders, CULTS & WORLD RELIGIONS four insights emerge in terms of the Christian response to New Age. First, on the error side, some Christian writers hurt analysis by mixing proper FROM SWEDENBORG TO TOLLE critique with sloppy Bible prophecy theories. No, the New Age did not usher in the return of Jesus. Likewise, Satan did not create a One World Church through the New Age. Sadly, Christian prognostication about the future is often as pathetic as New Age predictions. Four insights on Christian responses to New Age spirituality Second, all Christian critics (from fundamentalist to evangelical and mainline) By James A. Beverley, professor of Christian thought and ethics at Tyndale Seminary in Toronto correctly recognized that New Age teachers offer a fundamentally different gospel and a different Jesus than provided in Scripture. As nice and cozy as New Age One advantage of getting older is you can look back and see how things changed theories sound, this is a spiritually deadly paradigm on God, the identity of Jesus, shape, where predictions were wrong, when opinions were right, and more fairly human personhood, proper biblical interpretation, the way of salvation and proper assess events from the distance of time. I’ve been thinking along these lines in moral teaching. relation to the New Age movement, now not so new. (On the latter, people should have abandoned MacLaine as a spiritual guide as soon While scholars actually trace the New Age back to the rise of various esoteric groups as she defended her adultery with a British politician by claiming they used to be and leaders in the 18th and 19th centuries (Emanuel Swedenborg, Theosophy, lovers in a previous life.) Christian Science, New Thought, Swami Vivekananda), the New Age is more commonly linked to developments in the West since the 1960s and 1970s. Third, New Age spirituality provides a perfect example for Christians to realize that what makes no sense to us is viewed as incredible and liberating truth for A few readers might remember hearing about the Findhorn community in Scotland others. Consider, for example, the New Age obsession with channeling spirits (1962), Esalen in California (1962), Werner Erhards Est (1971) or A Course in Miracles from another realm. in 1975. All of us who lived through the musical Hair remember its line “This is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius.” Believe it or not, that was 1967. It would take When you get a moment, ask your search engine to show you clips of JZ Knight another two decades for New Age to become a household term. getting messages from Ramtha, 35,000-year-old warrior from the lost city of Atlantis. I can’t imagine Christians wanting to pay $1,000 to hear Ramtha speak through JZ If any one moment and person epitomize the apex of New Age religion, it would be at her headquarters in Yelm, Washington. However, our effectiveness in witness is Shirley MacLaine in 1987. That year the American actress made the cover of Time directly proportional to gentle truth bearing, especially to sincere believers. “Speak and her life story Out on a Limb was featured in a TV miniseries. It doesn’t matter actress proclaimed under the direction of her New Age spiritual guide, “I am God.” which New Age teacher you read – Jesus is always referenced positively. It’s like the old gospel song teaches, “There’s Something About That Name.” Certainly, New Age With MacLaine you get all the central themes and practices of New Age spirituality teachers distort the identity and teachings of Jesus – that is beyond tragic – but let’s – humans are divine, karma, reincarnation, channeling, UFOs, use of crystals, celebrate that there is at least a deep realization in New Age circles that Jesus is a astrology, Jesus went to India to receive New Age teaching, unity of religions, precious gift to humanity. CHAPTER SEVEN The Age of Aquarius Although the idea of a New Age was popularized by Alice Bailey in the early twentieth century, the term had been around at least since the American Rev- olution before it was used self-consciously by Theosophists like her who be- lieved a “master” would come to enlighten humanity and usher us into a new age. The concept picked up relevance as the s counterculture looked to- ward the Age of Aquarius as a utopian future of peace and equality. Move- ments aimed at social and personal transformation that emerged or were given new meaning in the s continue to shape New Age and Neopagan religions. Ideas about the expected new era vary among Neopagans and New Agers, just as they ranged in the s from social revolution to com- munal escape from society. But most agree that it will include a changed dy- namic between men and women, healthy diet, holistic healing practices, and peacefulness. Along with and related to holistic healing and feminist restructuring, en- vironmentalist concerns are seen as key in bringing about the transformation of society. Many New Agers and Neopagans believe that an ecologically vi- able relationship to the natural world will characterize the future age, when humans will live more harmoniously on earth. Some also believe the earth it- self, a living being that has been ill used by humanity, will bring about cata- clysmic changes, while others expect a gradual dawning of enlightened con- sciousness among large numbers of people to usher in the New Age. Goddess religion will emerge from a “Great Purification,” claim some ob- servers, borrowing a phrase from Hopi prophecy: “Look at the freak weather phenomena all around us .

Thank you, Drs. Christina von Mayrhauser, Sabina Magliocco, and Kimberly Kirner. Each of you has played a significant role in developing and honing my skills and intellect in anthropological thought and, perhaps more significantly, in being a good person. Additionally, I would like to single out two students without whose friendship (more accurately, mentorship) I would not have completed this degree: Victoria Weaver and Kevin Zemlicka. Victoria and Kevin, I am honored to have you as such dear friends. From our mutual experiences in this program, I know that our bond is permanent. Please be prepared to keep assisting me with my many neuroses in the future. To all of those mentioned above, know that you have instilled in me aspects of character, personality, identity (or whatever the hell you want to call it) that will remain with me eternally.

  • Emanuel Swedenborg, the Spiritual Colombus, by U.S.E. 2Nd., Revised
EMANUEL SWEDENBORG 'f~e Scpititual ColUfll eu~ A SKETCH IIY U.S. E. SECOND EDITION (REVISED) JAMES SPEIRS 36 BLOOMSBURY STREET, LONDON 1877 2/~. 'h-7. "9' "•' ,, Coogle PREFACE. GREAT changes are taking place in the very .structures of society. Old notions, like dilapidated houses, are passing away. New ones, possessing greater breadth and light and beauty are rising upon the ruins. The revolu tion is a silent one, accomplished over the heads of men nolms volms, by forces noiseless as the sunshine. The opposition is strong, for the positions disturbed are ancient; but many opponents, rather than be "behind the age," have accepted the situation, at first with distru.'lt, then with tolerance, then with ample wonder that such excellent things had not earlier arrived. One of the symptoms of these changes (itself almost a revolution) is the attention now given by pulpit, platform, press, and in the social circle, to the remarkable theories which EMANUEL SWEDENBORG promulgated more than a hundred years ago. Somehow or other SWEDENBORG is becoming a factor in many of the problems of to-day. His influence per vades modem literature and dogma to a surprising extent. His writings exist in many languages, and circulate by thousands every year. Many of the leaders of public opinion, and most of the public libraries, theo logical seminaries, and literary institutions possess them. Books, representing his views reduced to common parlance, multiply very fast, find a market, and are reviewed by the press, sometimes with favour, generally with respect. Further, a band of intelligent followers, whose strength is not to be measured by the foot-rule of the statistician, by means of lectures and " Silent Missionaries" make SWEDENJIORG's doctrines widely known, and defend them-when they get an opportunity.

  • Emanuel Swedenborg and the Kabbalah
chapter 9 De Sapientia Salomonis: Emanuel Swedenborg and the Kabbalah Susanna Åkerman-Hjern There is a perception that Emanuel Swedenborg (1688–1772) was influenced by the Kabbalah, and it is true that one can often see a phenomenological similarity1 in the two cosmologies: existence of upper (celestial and spiritual) worlds and lower (natural) worlds; an influx from the celestial world into the lower worlds; the presence of spirits and angels; emphasis on the Old Testa- ment text and its inner dimension; the engendered cosmos-and-Deity motifs, both divisible into male and female qualities; the Sephirotic tree as having hu- man form and Adam qadmon as similar to Swedenborg’s postulation of the Grand human forming the heavens in communities of souls – especially since both are coordinated with the human organs.2 However, it has recently been argued by Friedemann Stengel that Swedenborg as a rationalist gained these specific ideas from his contemporaries, for example by reading the German cosmologist Andreas Rüdiger’s Physica divina, recta via (Frankfurt, 1716) – treating of the nexus between the spiritual and natural worlds and of physi- cal influx.3 Wouter Hanegraaff has further argued that Swedenborg was very critical of the Jews and that he did not appreciate their religion. Swedenborg repeatedly says that Jewish form of worship is external and even if the religion of the Jews is symbolical of the Divine they lack what he calls an internal sense. With such a negative assessment of the Jewish tradition, Hanegraaff consid- ers it most unlikely that Swedenborg would regard important anything of the 1 Pacheco, Visionary Consciousness, 59–67.
