The aim of the book project is to identify and categorize the books written by naturopathic doctors / naturopaths around the world. The following report is an analysis of the results received. Naturopathic Practice Naturopathic medicine / naturopathy is practiced in 98 countries around the world, spanning all world regions.[1] As identified in the 2015 World Naturopathic Report [2] and the 2016 Naturopathic Roots Report [3] there is a high degree of consistency in how naturopathic practitioners (NP) practice around the world. The 2017 White Paper on Naturopathic Philosophies, Principles and Theories outlines the foundational basis of the global naturopathic profession.[4] There are differences in naturopathic education, as summarized in the 2018 WNF Education and Credentials Report [5] and in naturopathic regulation as outlined in the 2019 Global Naturopathic Regulation Report.[6] In order to be eligible for WNF membership, naturopathic organizations must support the highest naturopathic educational standards in their country and must be working towards regulation. The WNF identified three projects to determine the resources available to augment naturopathic education and to inform naturopathic practice. The first was a detailed analysis of the research written by naturopathic doctors / naturopaths around the world.[7] This analysis indicated that there was a substantial quantity of peer-reviewed naturopathic research indexed in research journal databases and this research covered very broad topics which is consistent with naturopathic practice.[8] This book project is the second part and its aim was to compile a listing of textbooks, professional books and consumer books written by NPs. The third project will be a survey with the aim of identifying the volume, type and distribution of journal articles published by naturopathic organizations and written by NPs. Together, these three projects will help to identify the resources that are available within the profession to inform naturopathic practice. Book Project Process Identifying books used by naturopathic educational institutions in teaching the philosophies, principles and theories of naturopathic practice was part of the 2016 survey conducted by the WNF [3]. In June 2018 the WNF published a list of books identified from the survey.[9] In 2018 the book project was expanded to include books written by naturopathic doctors / naturopaths around the world. The second phase of this project started with a list of ~ 700 books that had been compiled on www.ndhealthfacts.org and that was accessed with permission. [10] A snowballing method was to identify naturopathic doctors / naturopaths who had written books. Requests to send the WNF listing of books was sent to all WNF member organizations and was posted on social media between June 2018 and December 2018 and periodically after that. Known naturopathic authors were also searched on google, amazon and other book sties to obtain additional book titles. The criteria for inclusion was that the book had to be written by a naturopathic doctor or naturopath and the book had to have an ISBN number (or equivalent) to be included. Information was captured on an excel spreadsheet and all books were coded and thematically analyzed. 3 WNF Naturopathic Book Report Overview of Results The analysis of the books written by NPs was presented at the 2019 WNF General Assembly. The charts presented below are from that event and include the analysis of the 1335 books included in the original publication. The results include books from all world regions, encompassing twenty-three countries. The books from Europe account for 54% (n= 718), North America 44% (n= 581) with the remaining thirty-six books (2%) coming from Western Pacific (n= 21), Latin America (n= 8) and Asia (n= 7). The countries with the highest number of books written include USA (n= 446), Germany (n= 300), France (n= 190), United Kingdom (n= 157), Canada (n= 132), Portugal (n= 33), Switzerland (n= 22), New Zealand (n= 11) and Australia (n= 10) with the remaining thirty-five books coming from India and Chile (both with n= 5), Austria, Belgium, Spain and Slovenia (each with n= 3), Netherlands, Scotland and Brazil (each with n= 2) and one from Greece, Italy, Russia, Nepal and Puerto Rico. Naturopathic books are available in nine languages including English (57%), German (20%), French (15) %), and the remaining 8% spanning Portuguese, Spanish, Slovenian, Greek, Italian and Russian. It is estimated that about 10% of the books written by NPs are textbooks with the remainder being written for healthcare professionals and consumers. Chart 1: Publication Dates for Naturopathic Books Publication Dates for Naturopathic Books The publication dates indicates that 73% of the books have been written since 2000 529 with 9% written before 1950, 13% written 409 between 1990 and 1999, 31% between 2000 and 2009 and 40% written between 2010 and 2019. 172 121 14 17 28 45 before 1950 - 1960 - 1970 - 1980 - 1990 - 2000 - 2010 - 1950 1959 1969 1979 1989 1999 2009 2019 As of October 2020, we have a listing of 1450 books written by naturopathic doctors / naturopaths. ANNUAL REPORT KHUSHBOO GOES TO SCHOOL Khushboo, 7, whose name means ‘having a sweet scent’, is in second grade at the Ghulam Haider School in Kabul, Afghanistan. She likes being in school, and despite complaining “My teachers give me lots of homework to do…!” she says she wants to be a teacher some day. Khushboo lives in a poor neighbourhood with her family: her father, who is a messenger, her mother, a younger brother, and a 10-year-old sister who also goes to this school. UNICEF provided Khushboo’s school with learning materials and paid for teacher training. The school was one of thousands that benefited from UNICEF assistance after years of conflict and extreme poverty had nearly destroyed the country’s educa- tion system. The previous regime had banned all girls, including Khushboo’s sister, from attending school. From 2001 to 2002, UNICEF led efforts to support the Interim Administration’s ‘Back to School’ campaign. By the end of 2002, 3 million Afghan children – including 1 million girls – were back in the classroom. More children are on their way. The transplantation of tissues and cells offers major therapeutic benefits and improvement of the quality of life, but raises a number of questions of principle. The Council of Europe is the leading standard- setting institution in the field. It approaches organ transplantation from an ethical and human rights perspective, taking compliance with the principles of non-commercialisation and voluntary donation of substances of human origin as the basis for all ethical concerns in this respect. Its work includes assuring the safety and quality of organs, tissues and cells, meeting the organ shortage, living donation and preventing and minimising organ trafficking. The 3rd edition of the Guide to safety and quality assurance for the transplantation of organs, tissues and cells is now available. Its aim is to provide guidance for all those involved in order to maximise the quality of organs, tissues and cells and to minimise risks, and thereby increase the success rate of transplants. It includes safety and quality assurance standards for procurement, preservation, processing and distribution of organs, tissues and cells of human origin (allogenic and autologous) used for transplantation purposes.
