  • Hermeneutics and the Early Modern Garden: Ingenuity, Sociability, Education
chapter 10 Hermeneutics and the Early Modern Garden: Ingenuity, Sociability, Education Denis Ribouillault 1 Historiography The question of meaning in landscape architecture and gardens has benefited considerably from the iconological approach developed for art history by Aby Warburg and Erwin Panofsky. The most important contributions were produced by students of Panofsky, notably David Coffin, who published his monograph on the Villa d’Este at Tivoli in 1960, and Elizabeth Blair McDougall, who wrote her dissertation on the Villa Mattei in Rome. Coffin taught and inspired a new generation of scholars such as Claudia Lazzaro for Italian Renaissance gardens and Jan de Jongh for early modern Dutch gardens. Italian and German schol- ars (Eugenio Battisti, Marcello Fagiolo, Maria Luisa Madonna, Detlef Heikamp, Karl Schwager, among others) also embraced the iconological approach, study- ing the garden within a broader cultural and literary context bringing to the fore the question of its meaning.1 The idea that the garden was designed with a specific programme became a central idea. David Coffin showed convinc- ingly that the design of the Villa d’Este gardens rested on the figure of Hercules and his Choice at the Crossroads: ‘The gardens […] present the theme of the choice of Hercules between Voluptas, represented by the Grotto of Venus, and Virtue, exemplified by the Grotto of Diana. It is possible even that the general layout of the gardens may have been conditioned by this subject. Hercules’s choice was symbolized by the Pythagorean Y, since, after pursuing a straight uneventful path of life, a youth when he came of age had to choose between 1 On the historiography of gardens, especially early modern Italian gardens, see Coffin D.R., “The Study of the History of the Italian Garden until the First Dumbarton Oaks Colloquium”, in Conan M.

  • Rudolf Stingel 26 Mai – 6 Octobre 2019

  • SMALL Tour in Friuli Venezia Giulia
SMALL tour in friuli venezia giulia Day 1 | Venezia 10.30am - 5.30pm Short and intense tour starting from St. Erasmus (the garden of Venice), as readable model of the formation process of agricultural and of settlement land, where you can see the formation of the settlement (rural and urban) and of the territory: the island, full of linear watery basins (fish ponds, dug up to obtain fill soil, where the fish is bred or kept alive), lined with banks and lapped by waterways. Moving then to Murano (the island of glass) which has Sant’Erasmo both mature settlement forms, extremely dense (compact textures with the characteristic bipolar amphibious water-land system, developed in depth, even up to more than one hundred meters, for the production needs of the rolling of glass cane beads), and recent low density settlement forms and even soils of more recent, controversial, colonization. Un unusual visit to understand the essence itself of the lagoonal city and to bring back home an unforgettable memory. Collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, Gift of Katherine S. Schamberg by exchange. Photo courtesy of Paula Cooper Gallery, New York. Rudolf Stingel, the first major museum exhibition in the United States of the work of the renowned international artist Rudolf Stingel, goes on view at the Whitney Museum of American Art from June 28 to October 14, 2007. Organized by Manilow Senior Curator at Large Francesco Bonami for the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (MCA), this twenty-year survey, covering Stingel's work from 1987 to 2007, takes a comprehensive look at an influential contemporary artist whose work seeks to demystify notions of the artist, the artistic process, and the art object. The New York installation is being overseen by the Whitney’s Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Curator Chrissie Iles. Employing a wide-ranging palette of unconventional materials that includes carpet, rubber, painted aluminum, and Styrofoam, Stingel reflects upon some of the fundamental questions facing painting today: authenticity, meaning, hierarchy, and context. By transforming the process and perception of paintings, Stingel's work alters the viewer's physical encounter with the artwork, and invites participation in a new and deeper understanding and appreciation of art.

  • Ricerche E Restauri Alla Scuola Di Villa Manin Di Passariano

When La Biennale di Venezia Meets History does not just convey the content that visitors to the Central Pavilion in the Giardini della Biennale will encounter, but also a vision. Disquiet serves as a driving force behind research, which requires dialogue to verify its theories and needs history to absorb knowledge. This is what La Biennale does and will continue to do as it seeks to reinforce a methodology that creates even stronger bonds between its own disciplines. There are six Muses at the Biennale: Art, Architecture, Cinema, Theatre, Music and Dance, given a voice through the great events that fill Venice and the world every year. There are the places that serve as venues for all of La Biennale’s activities: the Giardini, the Arsenale, the Palazzo del Cinema and other cinemas on the Lido, the theatres, the city of Venice itself.
