Program Aims Our goal is to train physicians who will provide high quality care to the patients from our community, while maintaining a good work and life balance and personal well-being. The successful graduate should have the knowledge and ability to independently care for patients in a community setting, provide leadership to their primary institutions, and demonstrate patient focused care. The General Surgery Residency Program is an accredited GME program based at MountainView and Sunrise hospitals in Las Vegas, Nevada. Combined, these hospitals contain around 1,000 beds, including Sunrise Children’s Hospital. The surgical faculty provides a robust, in-depth training experience. The two hospitals together have 39 ORs, seven robotic systems, and 120 ICU beds. The surgeons perform cases across the spectrum of general, cardiothoracic, vascular, trauma, and pediatric surgery. As a Level II Trauma Center, Sunrise Hospital cares for patients with complex, life-threatening conditions. Sunrise Health Graduate Medical Education Consortium’s General Surgery residency program is led by Brian Citro, MD, MBA, FACS. Rotations at MountainView Hospital include General Surgery, Vascular Surgery, and Surgical Oncology. Rotations at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center include Emergency Surgery, Critical Care/Trauma, and Pediatric Surgery. Our current facilities include a state-of-the-art simulation facility, classroom and research space. The General Surgery residency program is 5 years in length and does include a required research component. Site Descriptions MountainView Hospital, our program’s primary site, delivers nationally acclaimed programs including a top cardiovascular and thoracic center, robotic surgery center, and certified stroke center and accredited chest pain center. MountainView is recognized for its devotion to emergency care, urology, wound care, gynecological services, Aboutorthopedics, vascular HCAcare, and inpatient Healthcare rehabilitation. They offer 24/7 emergency services comprised of 42 private ER rooms with multiple on-call physicians; residents will work with various radiological services such as CT scan, X- ray, and ultrasound in emergency cases. With dedicated in- house physicians, vascular care services range from minimally invasive valve surgery to complex mitral valve repair to abdominal aortic aneurysm repair. Moreover, the Las Vegas Institute for Robotic Surgery at MountainView is the first in the surrounding area to offer the most advanced robotic surgical system for minimally invasive surgery over a myriad of different specialties. Women’s Health services range from high-risk OB cases to Level-II Neonatal Care Units and a brand new Level-III NICU which opened in 2018. Sunrise Hospital offers a full suite of specialized services, like the Nevada Neurosciences Institute, which is home to the area’s most prominent neurologists and neurosurgeons. Sunrise is also known for its comprehensive cancer, breast, and epilepsy centers. Additionally, the Level-II Trauma hospital offers specialty services in women’s health, pulmonology, critical care, and complex surgery rehabilitation. Additionally, Sunrise has made significant investments in the latest technology to provide optimal care to patients. Some of the advanced technology consists of the da Vinci Surgical Robot, the GammaKnife Center, PACS, and pharmacy automation. These technological improvements help give care to patients with complex cases requiring precision and advanced methods. Serving the community since 2004 and located in Southwest Las Vegas, Southern Hills Hospital & Medical Center (SHH) is an accredited 246-bed acute care hospital with 911 staff members and 1400 physicians. The facility provides emergency and pediatric emergency services, a behavioral health, inpatient and outpatient program, accredited Chest Pain Center, a Certified Primary Stroke Center, a dedicated orthopedic and spine unit, OB/GYN, Level II NICU, and fellowship-trained diagnostic imaging experts.
