Litt Invasive grasses can alter plant communities and can potentially affect arthropods due to specialized relationships with certain plants as food resources and reproduction sites. Kleberg bluestem (Dichanthium annulatum) is a non-native grass and tanglehead (Heteropogon contortus) is native to the United States, but recently has become dominant in south Texas. I sought to: 1) quantify changes in plant and arthropod communities in invasive grasses compared to native grasses, and 2) determine if grass origin would alter effects. I sampled vegetation and arthropods on 90 grass patches in July and September 2009 and 2010 on the King Ranch in southern Texas. Arthropod communities in invasive grasses were less diverse and abundant, compared to native grasses; I also documented differences in presence and abundance of certain orders and families. -

Progress Report for 2009 surveys Zhang Haomiao* *PH D student at the Department of Entomology, College of Natural Resources and Environment, South China Agricultural University, Guangzhou 510642, China. Email: [email protected] Introduction Three families in the superfamily Calopterygoidea occur in China, viz. the Calo- pterygidae, Chlorocyphidae and Euphaeidae. They include numerous species that are distributed widely across South China, mainly in streams and upland running waters at moderate altitudes. To date, our knowledge of Chinese spe- cies has remained inadequate: the taxonomy of some genera is unresolved and no attempt has been made to map the distribution of the various species and genera. This project is therefore aimed at providing taxonomic (including on larval morphology), biological, and distributional information on the super- family in South China. In 2009, two series of surveys were conducted to Southwest China-Guizhou and Yunnan Provinces. The two provinces are characterized by karst limestone arranged in steep hills and intermontane basins. The climate is warm and the weather is frequently cloudy and rainy all year. This area is usually regarded as one of biodiversity “hotspot” in China (Xu & Wilkes, 2004). Many interesting species are recorded, the checklist and photos of these sur- veys are reported here. And the progress of the research on the superfamily Calopterygoidea is appended. Methods Odonata were recorded by the specimens collected and identified from pho- tographs. Februar 2021189 Odonate wing vein preferences in haemolymph sucking Forcipomyia paludis (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae; Odonata) René Manger Schukkingpad 17, 7971 BV Havelte, The Netherlands, [email protected] Abstract In summer 2020, the Odonata fauna in the Weerribben-Wieden National Park was exam- ined at various localities for the Odonata parasiteForcipomyia paludis. This park is currently one of the localities in the Netherlands where the species is found every year. Five localities in the area have been surveyed and many of the Odonata species were found to be infected by biting midges. The parasites have been studied in more detail on photos of the Odonata species and an accurate overview was obtained on which wing veins they sucked. The high- est numbers of biting midges were observed on the Cubitus vein. Furthermore, 91% of all observed midges sucked on the lower wing veins of the dragonflies and 9% on the upper ones. Biting midges were not observed in all of the sites surveyed in the park. Zusammenfassung Analyse der vom Libellenparasiten Forcipomyia paludis bevorzugten Flügeladern (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae; Odonata) – Im Sommer 2020 wurde die Libellenfauna an verschiedenen Orten im Nationalpark Weerribben-Wieden auf den Libellenparasiten Forci pomyia paludis untersucht. Dieser Park ist derzeit einer der Orte in den Niederlanden, an denen die Art jedes Jahr gefunden wird. Fünf Standorte in der Region wurden auf ihre Libellenfauna unter- sucht, und eine große Anzahl der Libellen war von Gnitzen parasitiert. Die Gnitzen wurden auf Fotos der Libellen genauer untersucht, und dabei ergab sich ein genaues Bild, auf wel- chen Flügelvenen sie parasitierten. -
The Phylogeny of the Zygopterous Dragonflies As Based on The
THE PHYLOGENY OF THE ZYGOPTEROUS DRAGON- FLIES AS BASED ON THE EVIDENCE OF THE PENES* CLARENCE HAMILTON KENNEDY, Ohio State University. This paper is merely the briefest outline of the writer's discoveries with regard to the inter-relationship of the major groups of the Zygoptera, a full account of which will appear in his thesis on the subject. Three papers1 by the writer discussing the value of this organ in classification of the Odonata have already been published. At the beginning, this study of the Zygoptera was viewed as an undertaking to define the various genera more exactly. The writer in no wise questioned the validity of the Selysian concep- tion that placed the Zygopterous subfamilies in series with the richly veined '' Calopterygines'' as primitive and the Pro- toneurinae as the latest and final reduction of venation. However, following Munz2 for the Agrioninae the writer was able to pick out here and there series of genera where the devel- opment was undoubtedly from a thinly veined wing to one richly veined, i. e., Megalagrion of Hawaii, the Argia series, Leptagrion, etc. These discoveries broke down the prejudice in the writer's mind for the irreversibility of evolution in the reduction of venation in the Odonata orders as a whole. Undoubt- ably in the Zygoptera many instances occur where a richly veined wing is merely the response to the necessity of greater wing area to support a larger body. As the study progressed the writer found almost invariably that generalized or connecting forms were usually sparsely veined as compared to their relatives. -

(holotype ♂, China, Gansu, Wenxian, Bikou, alt. 950m, 9/13 vii 2005) and Matrona corephaea Hämäläinen, Yu & Zhang, spec. nov. (holotype ♂, China, Zhejiang, West Tianmushan, alt. 700m, 8 viii 2007) are described and illustrated for both sexes. These two species differ markedly from the members of the Matrona basi- laris species group by their sparser venation and absence of bluish-white reticulation at the wing base. Key words: Odonata, Calopterygidae, Matrona, new species, China, corephaea, oreades Introduction Our knowledge of the calopterygid damselflies assigned to the genus Matrona Selys, 1853 is still surprisingly inad- equate, although they are striking and conspicuous insects. Selys Longchamps (1853) established Matrona as a subgenus of the genus Calopteryx Leach with Matrona basilaris Selys, 1853 from “Nord de la Chine” as the only known species. Later, Selys Longchamps (1888) stated that the type specimens [presently in IRSN, Brussels] of M. basilaris came from the Shanghai area and north China. -

Pres- ently four species are included in the genus: Echo margarita Selys, 1853 (type species of the genus), E. uniformis Selys, 1879, E. modesta Laidlaw, 1902 and E. perornata Yu & Hämäläinen, 2012 (see Hämäläinen in K#$%#'#*+/+ = H?G?'?*+/+ 2013: 206). Echo margarita is known to occur in north-eastern India and in the ad- jacent areas of northern Burma and south-western Yunnan. e subspe- cies E. margarita tripartita Selys, 1879 was synonymized with the nominate form by H?G?'?*+/+ (2013). Echo perornata is known only from Motuo area in south-eastern Tibet.
