  • Woman's Status in the Kalmyk and Buryat Buddhist Tradition
Journal of Siberian Federal University. Humanities & Social Sciences 2020 13(7): 1195-1206 DOI: 10.17516/1997-1370-0636 УДК 294.3 Woman’s Status in the Kalmyk and Buryat Buddhist Tradition: History and the Current State Mergen S. Ulanov, Valeriy N. Badmaev and Andrey V. Radionov* Kalmyk State University named after B.B. Gorodovikov Elista, Russian Federation Received 23.05.2019, received in revised form 04.06.2020, accepted 10.07.2020 Abstract. The article deals with the problem of the woman’ status in the history of Buddhism of the Mongol-speaking peoples of Russia, such as the Kalmyks and the Buryats. Special attention is paid to the female clergy issue in the religious history of these indigenous groups. The authors note that with the spread of Buddhism, women in Buryatia and Kalmykia acquired a higher social and religious status, which is enshrined in legal documents. At the same time, in the traditional Kalmyk and Buryat society a woman was generally excluded from active social life and could not make a career in the religious sphere. In the 20th century, the position of Kalmyk and Buryat women in the society underwent significant societal changes. The Soviet state sought to involve the women of Kalmykia and Buryatia into building a new society, actively fighting against the Buddhist religion and conducting the nation-wide atheistic propaganda. All these contributed to the significant decrease in the religiosity of the population in these regions, including its female part. Today, the position of women in the religious life of Kalmykia and Buryatia is characterized as ambivalent.

IRB protocol # 0709.10 Abstract Holland, Edward Christian (Ph.D., Geography) Buddhism in Post-Soviet Russia: The Geographic Contexts of ‘Revival’ Thesis directed by Professor John O’Loughlin This dissertation is about religious practice and belief among Buddhists in the Russian Federation. Using the case studies of Kalmykia and Buryatia, two of Russia’s 21 ethnic republics, I explore contemporary opinion about the relevance of Buddhism through a multiple methods approach. In Kalmykia, I use elite interviews, focus groups, and a small-scale (N=300) survey as the primary methodologies. While religious elites generally view the region’s religious revival as broad but not deep, there is a genuine sentiment that religion is an important component of post-Soviet national identity as expressed by interlocutors in focus groups and in survey responses. These competing discourses around revival complicate a straightforward reading of the role of Buddhism in the republic.

  • 'All Roads Lead to Siberia'. Two Stories of the Kalmyk Deportation
239 DOCUMENTS ElzaBair Guchinova ‘All Roads Lead to Siberia’. Two Stories of the Kalmyk Deportation Introduction For a long time, I have had both a professional and a personal interest in the deportation, a topic which began making its way into public discussion during the 1990s. I used every pos- sible opportunity to discuss it with Kalmyks of the older generation, to read relevant publica- tions in the press and in scholarly journals, and to take part in political action related to it. But it took me some time to grasp how productive the deportation would be as the subject of an anthropological investigation. That came only as my professional competence in, and famili- arity with, recent methodological practice in social anthropology increased and developed. In fact, I developed a firm scholarly interest in the topic only after I left Kalmykia. The two texts published here are taken from a group of interviews twenty in all about the deportation of the Kalmyks in December 1943. I carried these out in Elista during October ElzaBair Guchinova 2004. Before I began, I imagined there would be Institute of Ethnology few problems with finding people to talk to. and Anthropology, Elista is a small town, and the pace of life is Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow relaxed people amble home for lunch in the No.3 FORUM FOR ANTHROPOLOGY AND CULTURE 240 middle of the working day so youd imagine that pensioners, in particular, would have nothing to do all day and would be only too happy to receive guests.
