He's enthusiastic. He's excited. And he's raring to go. But he's also realistic. Mark Manning, the seventh head coach in the storied history of University of Northern Iowa wrestling, knows the task facing him this season is formidable --the Panthers are coming off a 7-8 dual season and a 41st-place finish in the NCAA Championships they hosted last March. But the former North Carolina and Oklahoma assistant is ready to make the Panthers a force once again. He was appointed coach for the East team at the 1991 , 1993 and 1995 Olympic Festivals. As a competitor, the South Dakota native compiled a 121-23 record and was a two-time national champion at Nebraska-Omaha and a three-time Division II all-American at 150 pounds. From 1986 to 1989, he was a member of the U.S. Freestyle Team and won the Silver Medal at the 1989 .

Stephens was a three-time state qualifier at Centerville (Iowa) High School, placing second as a sophomore and junior and fourth as a senior. He earned his bachelor's degree from UNI in economics. He won the University Nationals freestyle title in 1995 and still competes at the national level in hopes of making the U.S. Freestyle Team .

1997-98 Northern Iowa Wrestling ------39 TEAM HONORS Most Valuable Wresder Ed Ewoldt Scholarship 1997 - Scott Murray In January of 1992, Northern Iowa officials announced the establishment of the Ed Ewoldt Wrestling Scholarship, the 1996 -Tony Wieland first fully-endowed scholarship in the history of the 1995 - Justin Greenlee University's athletics prowam. 1994 - Dave Malecek The scholarship was made possible by a $120,000 gift to 1993 - Steve Hartle the Northern Iowa Foundation by Ron Magruder of Orlando, 1992 - Rich Powers Florida. Each year, beginning with the 1992-93 academic year, the Panther wrestling program has awarded a full 1991 - Rich Powers scholarship from the interest generated by the gift. 1990 - Gary Steffensmeier Ewoldt began attending UNI, then known as Iowa State 1989 - Joel Greenlee Teachers College , in 1948 and graduated in 1954, competing 1988 - Joel Greenlee on the wrestling team his last two years. He went on to teach and coach at West Central-Maynard (lA) High School from 1987 - Jeff Weatherman 1955-58 and Wheaton (IL) Central High School , where he 1986 - Mark Schwab coached Magruder, from 1959-88. 1985 - Lew Sondgeroth "Ed has had a tremendous impact on my life," Magruder 1984 - Bob Hallman said, "and has helped me get where I am today. This is my him for being a great teacher, mentor and 1983 - Randy Majors way of thanking friend ." Magruder is the president of Cracker Barrel Old Country Lyle E. Schwamnbach Award Store, Inc.
