Mark Manning, the seventh head coach in the storied history of University of Northern Iowa wrestling, knows the task facing him this season is formidable --the Panthers are coming off a 7-8 dual season and a 41st-place finish in the NCAA Championships they hosted last March.     Wrestling DIVISION I 2014 Highlights Penn State completes final-session comeback to earn fourth title in a row — Before the finals, Penn State head coach Cael Sanderson felt pretty good about having the weight of a team title on the backs of his two senior stars. They both delivered. North Carolina State’s Nick Gwiazdowski and Oklahoma State’s Alex Dieringer certainly helped the cause as well. In order to win the team championship, Minnesota needed Tony Nelson and Dylan Ness to win their finals bouts. However, Gwiazdowski completed a pair of third-period takedowns to beat Nelson in the 285-pound final and Ness could not get by Dieringer in the 157-pound title bout. The first of two Penn State seniors, Ed Ruth, beat Maryland’s Jimmy Sheptock in the 184-pound final. It put the Nittany Lions in front by 1.5 points. The finals started at 174 pounds and finished with 165 pounds. When Ruth’s teammate, fellow senior David Taylor, took the mat, it was academic - Penn State had its fourth consecutive NCAA championship in the books. Taylor fashioned the final tally, beating Oklahoma State’s Tyler Caldwell, 6-0, in the night’s final match at 165 pounds. “People don’t understand how difficult it is when you walk off this stage when you lose and how much better it feels when you win,” Taylor said. Taylor gave credit to senior teammate James English, a 149-pounder who finished his career as an All-American, one of seven for Penn State, who finished with 109.5 points.

The Hall of fame inductions will be held on Sunday afternoon, April 12, 2015 at the Ramada Inn in State College, Pennsylvania. A buffet luncheon will precede the formal ceremonies with brief acceptance and brief recognition speeches by the inductees. The details for attending the Hall of Fame Banquet ceremonies will be published in the December issue of the Pennsylvania Wrestling Round-up as well as on the PWCA website. The Class of 2015 consists of the following individuals (in alphabetical order): Nelson Fritz (Coach-District 4) – Fritz coached his high school alma mater to a pair of PIAA Class AA state team championships in 1988 and 1991. He coached four Benton wrestlers to nine state championships including four-time state champion John Hughes, brother Russ and Tom Yurko (both two time state champions) and Bryan Wenner. Nick Grego (Coach – District 4) - Grego coached Athens HS team to the 1978 PIAA Class AA state team championship with just two qualifiers, state champion Pat Kelly and state runner-up Scott Webster. All together, Grego coached 10 PIAA state placewinners including state champions Dave Kennedy (1985), Paul Keysaw (1986) and Kelly.

    Wrestling DIVISION I Highlights Penn State wins fi rst title since 1953: While Penn State dominated the headlines at the 81st NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships all week, Arizona State’s Bubba Jenkins stole the show the fi nal night. Penn State’s David Taylor rolled into the 157-pound fi nal with a 38-0 record, part of a monster youth movement for Nittany Lions head coach Cael Sanderson. Jenkins wrestled for four seasons at Penn State but left the program with mixed feelings. He headed to Tempe, Ariz., and Arizona State, and, as luck would have it, faced Taylor in the fi nal on March 19 in front of an NCAA tournament-record fi nals crowd (17,687). The six sessions also broke an attendance record: 104,260. In a fl ash, Jenkins ended it. Taylor got to the leg of Jenkins (21-3). But the Virginia product locked up a cradle and rolled the Penn State rookie to his back for a stunning pin at the 2:14 mark. “[No hard feelings] toward David [Taylor],” said Jenkins, who lost in the NCAA fi nal in 2008. “[But] defi nitely towards Cael [Sanderson]. He didn’t think I was good enough or the right kid to win it at that weight class or any weight class. I wanted to go 149. But he had other ideas and he got rid of me. “And one man’s trash is a whole country’s treasure.” Taylor was trying to become just the fourth undefeated freshman champion, joining Oklahoma State’s Dick Hutton and Iowa’s Joe Scarpello, who each won titles as unde- feated freshman in 1947.

Douglas was succeeded by his legendary pupil, Cael Sanderson. Douglas will continue to command a presence in the wrestling room and as an ambassador for Iowa State, the sport of wrestling and those who will follow in his footsteps. A U.S. coach at several Olympic Games, one of four collegiate coaches to win more than 400 dual meets, Douglas won an NCAA team title at Arizona State. In short, the numbers are astounding: 13 NCAA champions, 110 All- America performances and 68 conference titles.
