Through light microscopy analysis, we measured the size of the pollen grain, pore, and annulus from 68 species of Rio Grande do Sul. Measurements were recorded of 10 forest species and 58 grassland species, representing all tribes of the Poaceae in Rio Grande do Sul. We measured the polar, equatorial, pore, and annulus diameter. Results of statistical tests showed that arboreous forest species have larger pollen grain sizes than grassland and herbaceous forest species, and in particular there are strongly significant differences between arboreous and grassland species. Smithsonian Contributions to Botany, number 68,52 pages, 24 figures, 1 table, 1989.-Although resembling the core group of the bambusoid grasses in many features of leaf anatomy, the Neotropical rainforest grass genera Anomochloa and Streptochaeta share characters that are unusual in the subfamily: lack of ligules, exceptionally long microhairs with an unusual morphology, a distinctive leaf blade midrib structure, and 5-nerved coleoptiles. Both genera also possess inflorescences that are difficult to interpret in conventional agrostological terms. Anomochloa is monotypic, and A. marantoidea, described in 1851 by Adolphe Brongniart from cultivated material of uncertain provenance, was rediscovered in 1976 in the wet forests of coastal Bahia, Brazil. The inflorescence terminates in a spikelet and bears along its rachis several scorpioid cyme-like partial inflorescences. Each axis of a partial inflorescence is subtended by a keeled bract and bears as its first appendages two tiny, unvascularized bracteoles attached at slightly different levels. The spikelets are composed of an axis that bears two bracts and terminates in a flower. The lower, chlorophyllous, deciduous spikelet bract is separated from the coriaceous, persistent, corniculate upper bract by a cylindrical, indurate internode. The flower consists of a low membrane surmounted by a dense ring of brown cilia (perigonate annulus) surrounding the andrecium of four stamens, and an ovary bearing a single hispid stigma. -

Clark I RESUMO - O presente trabalho analisa a distribuição geográfica dos bambus do Novo Mundo. Por questões práticas, os bambus foram divididos em dois gru pos: os bambus lenhosos e os herbáceos, essas categorias entretanto, nem sempre refletem relacionamentos filogenéticos, pois embora as Bambuseae incluam todos os bambus lenhosos, sendo portanto provavelmetne monofiléticos, os bambus her báceos são classificados em oito tribos. No Novo Mundo, (incluindo os taxa ainda não descritos) existem cerca de 45-46 gêneros e aproximadamente 515 espécies. Desses gêneros, apenas dois: Arundinaria e Streptogyna não são exclusivamente neotropicais. A área de maior endemismo e diversidade do grupo, está nas flo restils costeiras da Bahia: Brasil. Nesta região são encontrados 22 gêneros, repre sentando 48% de todos os gêneros neotropicais e desses, 5 são exclusivos desta região da Bahia. Palavras-chave: bambus, Gramineae, neotropical, endemismo. ABSTRACT - The present paper analyses the distribution of bamboos in New World. For convenience, bamboos are divided into two broad groups, the woody bamboos and the herbaceous bamboos. These categories do not necessarily reflect phylogenetic relationships among bamboo groups. The Bambuseae includes ali of the woody bamboos and is probably monophyletic, whereas the herbaceous bam boos are c1assified into eight tribes. In the New World (inc1uding underscribed taxa), 45-46 genera and approximately 515 species are represented; only two ge nera: Arundinaria and Streptogyna are not exclusively neotropical. The area of greatest endemism and diversity is the humid coastal forests of Bahia, Brazil. 22 genera have been found in this relatively small area, representing 48% of ali New World genera. -

Anomochlooideae are endemic to the New World and have two tribes and two genera in- cluding the widespread Streptochaeteae (3–4 spp.) and the critically endangered Anomochloeae (1 sp.) of coastal Bahia, Brazil. Pharoideae are pantropical with one tribe, three genera, and 14 species; all eight species of Pharus occur only in the New World. Bambusoideae and Ehrhartoideae are sister groups and together form a clade sister to Pooideae, although support for this set of relationships is low. -

Some 156 participants from 25 countries attended. They are listed with their addresses in the fol lowing pages. All three days of the conference were devoted to the presentation of papers during the morning and afternoon sessions. The evenings were filled with cultural and musical events most of which were related to bamboo. The three days immediately after the conference were also filled with entertainment and botanical tours. The papers are presented in the order in which they were given at the conference. The present report is a step toward the preparation of the Second Report on the State of the World’s Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture. Furthermore, it will provide a basis for establishing national, regional and global priorities, will help design strategic policies toward the implementation of priority actions for agricultural development, and will foster conservation and sustainable use of native and exotic biodiversity resources. As a party to both the Convention on Biological Diversity and the FAO International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, Brazil considers activities related to genetic resources as priorities. -

Chapter 1 Bamboo Taxonomy and Habitat
Chapter 1 Bamboo Taxonomy and Habitat L.G. Clark, X. London˜o, and E. Ruiz-Sanchez Abstract Bamboos (subfamily Bambusoideae) comprise one of 12 subfamilies within the grass family (Poaceae) and represent the only major grass lineage to diversify in forests. Bamboos are distinguished by the presence of well-developed, asymmetrically strongly invaginated arm cells in the leaf mesophyll as seen in cross section and also generally exhibit relatively broad, pseudopetiolate leaf blades usually with fusoid cells flanking the vascular bundles. The nearly 1,500 described species of bamboos are classified into three tribes: Arundinarieae (temperate woody bamboos, 546 species), Bambuseae (tropical woody bamboos, 812 species), and Olyreae (herbaceous bamboos, 124 species). Relationships between the three tribes remain uncertain, but a much better understanding of evolutionary relationships within the tribes has been achieved based on analyses of DNA sequence data, which we summarize. We present synoptic descriptions for the three tribes and, for the Bambuseae and Olyreae, their currently accepted subtribes, as well as lists of included genera and comments. The history of bamboo classification goes back over 200 years; we provide an overview of the most important advances leading to the current phylogenetic classification of bamboos based on their inferred evolu- tionary relationships. Bamboos are native to all continents except Antarctica and Europe and have a latitudinal distribution from 47 Sto50 300 N and an altitudinal distribution from sea level to 4,300 m. Bamboos therefore grow in association with a wide variety of mostly mesic to wet forest types in both temperate and tropical regions, but some bamboos have adapted to more open grasslands or occur in more specialized habitats.
