Ab 1993 Professur für Experimentelle Filmgestaltung an der Universität der Künste Berlin. 1974 Beginn der enzyklopädischen Zeichenserie Die Basis des Make-Up , 1978 Gründung der Filmproduktionsfirma Pym Films . Born in 1948 near Bremen in Germany, Heinz Emigholz trained first as a draftsman before studying philosophy and literature in Hamburg. He began filmmaking in 1968 and has worked since 1974 as a filmmaker, artist, writer and producer in Germany and the USA. He looks back on numerous exhibitions, retrospectives, lectures and publications. He has held a professorship in Experimental Filmmaking at the Universität der Künste, Berlin since 1993. In 1974 he started his encyclopaedic drawing series The Basis of Make-Up. In 1978 he founded his own film production company, Pym Films. It was a real workhorse in those days. Klaus Wyborny: I bought it at a pawn shop in Hamburg on Hansaplatz for 2000 D- marks with the three included lenses. E: But I had a zoom lens. W: I bought that later. When I noticed that one had very limited possibilities for filming with those three included lenses, the 10, the 26 and the 75. And I would have liked to have a lens somewhere in between. E: Of course the Schenec-Tady films wouldn’t have been possible at all without the zoom lens, because I drew these focal length values onto it and composed that way. W: I shot Die Geburt der Nation in Morocco with the camera. After I returned I got to know you more distinctly. You had asked if you could borrow it at some point. Then you showed me the script. Then I thought, this certainly won’t do the camera any good. E: Not only that. It broke. We had to have it repaired. The shutter was completely wasted after maybe 20,000 single frames. W: If one looks at this score here. Oh, the things one does for art. But the camera isn’t holy. E: Did you know then that this was art? The relationship between film and art was indeed somewhat tense back then.

At its center, the study investigates the practices of two pioneering filmmakers, Austrian Kurt Kren (b. Vienna, 1929; d. Vienna, 1998) and German Birgit Hein (b. Berlin, 1942). Tracking their aesthetic, ideological, and spatial reconfigurations of the cinematic apparatus—their “performances of cinema”—in Austria and former West Germany, the dissertation demonstrates how Kren and Hein were progenitors of influential new viewing practices that operated in the tacit geopolitical interstices between nation- states and underground cultures. Contemporary art, film, and media scholarship tends to move in one of two directions: either toward aesthetic inquiries into the appearance of moving images and other time-based arts in the visual art museum since the 1990s, or toward the politics of global media distribution in the digital age.
