HOW TO CHOOSE NEW PLANTINGS Before planting a new orchard, one should give serious consideration to varieties, orchard design, orchard site (soil and slope suitability), pre-plant soil management, etc. Some varieties are much more sensitive to Eastern Filbert Blight (EFB). See the chart below for a relative spectrum of EFB susceptibility. With new plantings, one should consider mixing in a number of pollen-compatible varieties, with suggestions at the present time leaning toward the new EFB-resistant gene pollinizer varieties released by OSU Hazelnut Breeding Program, which are Eta, Felix, Gamma, Theta, and York. Here is a list of new varieties with Gasaway resistance gene and their recommended pollinizers. RELATIVE SPECTRUM OF EFB SUSCEPTIBILITY

The idea for an industry office to house different entities with overarching goals goes back to 1949. Oregon’s hazelnut industry organizations evolved to meet the hazelnut industry’s needs and avoid duplication of efforts. These four organizations named below share one industry office and staff. Each is responsible for different

OregonHazelnuts.org projects, and each is funded by grower, processor, or vendor dollars.

The Nut Growers Society sponsors two meetings each year where hazelnut growers can attend workshops, tour orchards, visit with packers, and peruse trade booths for hazelnut farming related industries and equipment manufacturers. The Annual Meeting takes place every January at OSU and the Summer Tour every August at rotating locations.

Filberts.com | 15 OSU’S WORLD CLASS HAZELNUT BREEDING PROGRAM GROWING THE FUTURE Did you know hazelnuts boast the largest acreage of any research project on the OSU campus? So says the Oregon Hazelnut Industry endowed professor, Shawn Mehlenbacher, who’s performed trials on EFB-resistant varieties for more than 30 years. “The top jars you see on the shelf date from a trial in the 1920s,” he says. “This collaboration with the industry has been going on for many decades. The products we deliver have a direct impact on the industry.”

Mehlenbacher described the 17-year process involved between breeding a test variety to having a variety to release. “When you drove past the orchards coming in,” he explains, “everything over here has a single dominant gene for resistance to EFB. The number of sources of genetic resistance is now more than 100. And we’re trying to find other sources of resistance and combine them with yield and quality.”

Shawn Mehlenbacher, Ph.D., presents samples of OSU varieties at his research lab in Corvallis.
