Abstract: Recent reinvestigation of sections provided the opportunity to propose a new biostratigraphic zonation for the Aptian deposits of the region. The Barremian/Aptian boundary is defined by the disappearance of the belemnite Oxyteuthis (Validoteuthis) lahuseni. The basal Aptian does not contain any index macrofauna and could correspond to the Prodes- hayesites zone. The succeeding Deshayesites forbesi zone was recognized by CASEY (1964), but its stratigraphical range in the River Volga Basin was determined for the first time. It is overlain by the Deshayesites deshayesi zone with oil-shales. Above it, the Deshayesites grandis zone was recognized. It contains large Deshayesites in assemblages with numer- ous Australiceras. The Tropaeum (T.) bowerbanki zone ends the Lower Ap- tian succession. It was possible to recognize only one ammonite zone, the Aconeceras nisus zone, in the Middle Aptian. The Upper Aptian cannot be characterized by means of ammonites because of the near-shore origin. It is overlain disconformably by the Upper Albian with a sharp basal con- tact. The succession is very similar to that in England. Zusammenfassung: Jungste Studien der Profile geben die Moglichkeit, eine neue biostratigraphische Zonenaufteilung der Apt-Ablagerungen in diesem Gebiet vorzuschlagen.

New paleontological data are used to define more precisely stratigraphic ranges of some stratigraphic subdivisions, to consider correlation between standard and local zones established for different groups of fossils, and to suggest how the Upper Cretaceous regional scale of the East European platform can be improved.

Before I start telling you about Sumgayit events, which I firmly believe are of vital importance for Azerbaijan, and in the trial of which I represented the government, about peripeteia of this trial and other happenings which became echoes and continuation of the tragedy in Sumgayit, and finally about inferences I made about all the abovementioned as early as in 1989, I would like to give you some brief background about myself, in order to demonstrate you that I was not involved in the process occasionally and that my conclusions and position regarding the case are well grounded. Thus, after graduating from the Law Faculty of of the Kuban State University of Russia with honours, I was appointed to the Neftekumsk district court of the Stavropol region as an interne. After the lapse of some time I became the assistant for Mr Krasnoperov, the chairman of the court, who used to be the chairman of the Altay region court and was known as a good professional. The existing legislation at that time allowed two people’s assessors to participate in the court trials in the capacity of judges alongside with the actual judge.

Chechushkov, Ph.D. University of Pittsburgh, 2018 Why and how exactly social complexity develops through time from small-scale groups to the level of large and complex institutions is an essential social science question. Through studying the Late Bronze Age Sintashta-Petrovka chiefdoms of the southern Urals (cal. 2050–1750 BC), this research aims to contribute to an understanding of variation in the organization of local com- munities in chiefdoms. It set out to document a segment of the Sintashta-Petrovka population not previously recognized in the archaeological record and learn about how this segment of the population related to the rest of the society.

    How to use the Atlas The Atlas has two map sections The Main Section shows the location of Russia’s intact forest landscapes. The Thematic Section shows their tree species composition in two different ways. The legend is placed at the beginning of each set of maps. If you are looking for an area near a town or village Go to the Index on page 153 and find the alphabetical list of settlements by English name. The Cyrillic name is also given along with the map page number and coordinates (latitude and longitude) where it can be found. Capitals of regions and districts (raiony) are listed along with many other settlements, but only in the vicinity of intact forest landscapes. The reader should not expect to see a city like Moscow listed. Villages that are insufficiently known or very small are not listed and appear on the map only as nameless dots. If you are looking for an administrative region Go to the Index on page 185 and find the list of administrative regions. The numbers refer to the map on the inside back cover. Having found the region on this map, the reader will know which index map to use to search further. If you are looking for the big picture Go to the overview map on page 35. This map shows all of Russia’s Intact Forest Landscapes, along with the borders and Roman numerals of the five index maps. If you are looking for a certain part of Russia Find the appropriate index map. These show the borders of the detailed maps for different parts of the country.
