Going Full Circle

Our resident Ronald was truly a blessing to everyone at Malachi House. He made us laugh, and he definitely loved his candy – it went along with his sweet personality. As we got to know Ronald a little better, we found out that he was one of the original volunteers who assisted our contractors with transforming our donated row houses into Malachi House. Ronald remembers word spreading that Malachi House was in need of help, and so many people came and donated their time.

Ronald had the pleasure of knowing our co-founder, Father Paul Hritz, and described him as a kind and gentle man. Ronald recalls watching Father Paul make coffee for the workers every morning, and they all cherished that time together with him.

One of Ronald’s last wishes was to see his friend Joe Charboneau from the Indians. Joe was so kind. He came over and not only visited with Ronald, but also greeted all our residents and signed autographs. Ronald was also so happy that he got to see one last Indians game with his friend Slider. Ronald will be missed!

The Catherine “Kaki” O’Neill Leadership Award

This leadership award, given to an individual who exemplifies service and commitment to Malachi House, was awarded to Jeffery D. Neuman on September 9, 2016, at our Annual Meeting by our co-founder “Kaki” O’Neill.

Jeff is the President at Barnes Wendling. He has served on the Malachi House Board of Trustees for more than 25 years as the Treasurer. Jeff and his wife Mary Ann have been married for 35 years. They have three sons and two grandchildren.

Jeff and his staff have been an excellent resource for our organization, and we value his dedication to Malachi House.

Diane Kennedy For more than 50 years, Diane Kennedy has remained one of our strongest and most compassionate business leaders and philanthropists throughout the Cleveland community.

Saint Ignatius High School Sophomore Service

Saint Ignatius High School strives to prepare young men to be respectful of others and serve those in need. A Theology program, Sophomore Service, includes 45 hours of community service as part of each student’s sophomore year and requires them to choose a local non-profit to serve. Several times a week, sophomores come to assist us with the duties of Malachi House. They show such respect and kindness to our staff, volunteers and especially our residents. We have witnessed the impact they make on so many of our residents, and we are grateful to these fine young men.

This program has had a profound effect on students into adulthood, as seen by class of 1982 alumni Rev. Raymond Guiao, S.J., President of Saint Ignatius High School, and Joe Granzier, Malachi House Board Chair. Joe Granzier has been a devoted Malachi House Board Member for more than 18 years.

We are also proud to have Board Members Kevin Kelly ’81, Facilities Committee Chair; John Schriner ’92, PR/Development Co-Chair; and Bryan Evans ’05, Associate Board Member.

5 MESSAGE FROM THE CLINICAL TEAM

The clinical team here at Malachi House has a lot to keep them busy. Our applications and admissions have steadily increased, and we have already surpassed the number of admissions in 2015. Resident care continues to be our priority and in order to ensure the highest standards, we have implemented ongoing continuing education for the staff. We have applied for grant funding that will allow us to offer certification for our caregivers and caregiver assistants. This will provide recognition of our expertise in end-of-life care to the community and those agencies that look to us for a home and care for their hospice patients. The Quality and Safety Committee has been meeting regularly to ensure that our care meets the best standards of quality, safety and compliance, and that our resident care outcomes meet our high expectations. I would encourage everyone to reflect on this past year—a time to remember the residents and families that reached out to us. The New Year is a time to reconnect with the value and meaning of our work—a time of renewal and hope for all of us.

Annual Benefit Our Annual Benefits, typically held the first weekend in November each year, feature live entertainment, hors d’ oeuvres, and live and silent auctions.

Lights for Life Each year, we pause to honor our friends and family, or the memory of our loved ones, through our “Lights for Life” Celebration on the first Friday of December. Our supporters purchase a light on one of our beautiful outdoor evergreen trees to honor or remember those who mean so much to them. Our evening entails a tree lighting ceremony followed by a reception to recognize those commemorated in our Lights for Life Book.

Merry Ploughboys An evening of unforgettable traditional Irish music. We had a fantastic turnout of more than 300 guests at the Merry Ploughboys concert this year.

Annual Malachi House Open Our June 10, 2016, annual golf outing at Springvale Golf Club marked the 21st annual consecutive sellout event for the Malachi House Open. The 144 golfers enjoyed a gorgeous day of sportsmanship and golf.

Malachi House Associate Board Summer Social This year was our first Malachi House Summer Social. The afternoon began with a tour of Malachi House. Following the tour was a walk up W. 25th, where we stopped at three of the street’s most popular hotspots – Old Angle, TownHall and Bier Markt – for drink specials and happy hour pricing available at each location.

Cocktails for a Cause Malachi House held our first annual Cocktails for a Cause on October 6, 2016. Our celebrity bartenders were Joseph Granzier, Board Chair, and Judy Ghazoul Hilow, Executive Director.

Adopt a Resident/Adopt a House Upcoming Events Malachi House’s Adopt a Resident/Adopt a House program is our way of ensuring that each Lights for Life – Friday, December 2, 2016 of our residents have Christmas gifts they might otherwise not receive.
