GOLDEYES DOWNED BY MILKMEN STEVE SCHUSTER – WINNIPEG GOLDEYES – WEDNESDAY, MAY 26 th FRANKLIN, WI – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (3-5) lost 11-3 to the Milwaukee Milkmen at Franklin Field on Wednesday night. With the Goldeyes leading 3-0 in the bottom of the third, the Milkmen rallied for three runs to tie the game. Christ Conley was hit by a pitch leading off and took second when Aaron Hill singled through the left side. A Brett Vertigan sacrifice attempt led to a throwing error that brought Conley to the plate and set up second and third with no outs. Hill scored on a wild pitch, while Logan Trowbridge’s groundball to short ushered in Vertigan with the tying run. Raul Navarro made a sliding stop in the hole to his backhand side to retire Trowbridge. In the bottom of the fourth, Mason David pulled a double to right-centre with one out. Two batters later, Hill lined a two-out, RBI single to right-centre that put the Milkmen in front for the remainder of the game. David Washington’s two-out, popfly triple down the left field line scored Trowbridge and Adam Brett Walker to make it 6-3. Milwaukee (5-3) broke the game open with a five-run bottom of the seventh. Washington singled home Walker while Liam Scafariello scored on a wild pitch. Conley chipped in a sacrifice fly, and the Milkmen capped the frame on back-to-back, two-out RBI singles from Vertigan and Trowbridge. The Goldeyes jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. With two outs and no one on base, Milton Ramos was hit by a pitch and stole second. Dakota Conners tripled down the right field line to score Ramos. Milwaukee threatened to take an early lead after Brett Vertigan and Logan Trowbridge both singled in the bottom of the first. Goldeyes hurler Jorge Gonzalez was able to make up for his mistake though, picking off Vertigan at first. Late lineup addition Liam Scafariello followed by hitting a screamer at Winnipeg third baseman Milton Ramos who made a jumping catch for the third out and extinguished any fire the Milkmen had. Myles Smith made his second start of the 2021 season after pitching in a relief role in 2020, but Winnipeg struck first for the second night in the row after Dakota Conners hit a triple to right field, scoring Ramos from second base. Winnipeg’s next hitter Zack Costello chopped a routine ground ball to third but a Trowbridge throwing error allowed Conners to score Winnipeg’s second run of the inning. After a quiet second inning for the Milkmen in the batter’s box, the Goldeyes wasted no time piling onto their advantage after Kyle Martin launched his third home run of the young season to lead off the top of the third. The Milkmen saw déjà vu with two runners reaching to start the bottom of the third. However, the Franklin Nine were more successful this time after catcher Christ Conley was hit by a pitch and second baseman Aaron Hill hit a seeing-eye single between third and second base. Conley came around to score after a Winnipeg error and Hill crossed home shortly afterwards thanks to a wild pitch from Winnipeg hurler Jorge Gonzalez. Logan Trowbridge tied the ballgame up at 3 after his ground out brought home a speedy Brett Vertigan. Recent acquisition Trey Martin started off the bottom of the fourth with a single for the Milkmen but the Goldeyes’ Gonzalez picked off his second Milkman of the night with a snap throw to send Martin back to the dugout. However, it wasn’t enough to keep Winnipeg safe from the danger of Aaron Hill, who clubbed a single to right center and brought home Davis to give Milwaukee a 4-3 lead after four innings. The single was Hill’s 10thof the year, good enough for second in the American Association.
