GOLDEYES ADD DYNAMIC INFIELDER STEVE SCHUSTER – WINNIPEG GOLDEYES – THURSDAY, MAY 27 th WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes signed infielder Darren Seferina on Thursday. Seferina (pronounced seff-ur-EE-nuh) is a three-time all-star in the affiliated minor leagues, and last played in 2018 where he reached the Double-A level with both the St. Louis Cardinals’ and Milwaukee Brewers’ organizations. The Willemstad, Curacao native hit a combined .214 with 12 doubles, six home runs, 29 RBI, and 17 stolen bases over 97 games for the Double-A Texas League’s Springfield Cardinals (St. Louis), the Double-A Southern League’s Biloxi Shuckers (Milwaukee), and the Low-A Midwest League’s Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Milwaukee). Seferina is a lifetime .266 hitter in five professional seasons, and posted an on-base percentage of .354 or better three times in a four-year stretch from 2014-17. The 5-foot-9, 175-poudn infielder has averaged 86 runs scored, 26 doubles, 13 triples, seven home runs, 41 stolen bases, and 67 walks per 162 games during his career. The 27-year-old emigrated to the United States as a teenager before enrolling at Miami-Dade College in Florida. After hitting .405 with 34 stolen bases in 54 collegiate games as a freshman in 2014, Seferina was drafted by the Cardinals in the fifth round. Defensively, Seferina has a lifetime .970 fielding percentage in 325 games at second base, while also seeing action at third base and shortstop. A left- handed batter and right-handed defender, Seferina was voted an all star in 2014 (State College Spikes, Short Season-A New York-Penn League), 2015 (Peoria Chiefs, Low-A Midwest League), and 2016 (Palm Beach Cardinals, High-A Florida State League). Seferina twice represented Curacao at the Little League World Series, including an international championship and second place overall finish at the event in 2005. The Goldeyes now have 25 players on their active roster. The American Association recently expanded its roster maximum to 25 active players for the duration of the 2021 season. The Goldeyes conclude their road series with the Milwaukee Milkmen tonight at 6:35 p.m. All the action can be heard locally on CJNU 93.7 FM and worldwide at www.cjnu.ca The Goldeyes will continue to monitor the reopening of the Canada/US border and assess a potential return to Shaw Park in 2021. GOLDEYES DOWNED BY MILKMEN STEVE SCHUSTER – WINNIPEG GOLDEYES – WEDNESDAY, MAY 26 th FRANKLIN, WI – The Winnipeg Goldeyes (3-5) lost 11-3 to the Milwaukee Milkmen at Franklin Field on Wednesday night. With the Goldeyes leading 3-0 in the bottom of the third, the Milkmen rallied for three runs to tie the game. Christ Conley was hit by a pitch leading off and took second when Aaron Hill singled through the left side. A Brett Vertigan sacrifice attempt led to a throwing error that brought Conley to the plate and set up second and third with no outs. Hill scored on a wild pitch, while Logan Trowbridge’s groundball to short ushered in Vertigan with the tying run. Raul Navarro made a sliding stop in the hole to his backhand side to retire Trowbridge. In the bottom of the fourth, Mason David pulled a double to right-centre with one out. Two batters later, Hill lined a two-out, RBI single to right-centre that put the Milkmen in front for the remainder of the game. David Washington’s two-out, popfly triple down the left field line scored Trowbridge and Adam Brett Walker to make it 6-3. Milwaukee (5-3) broke the game open with a five-run bottom of the seventh. Washington singled home Walker while Liam Scafariello scored on a wild pitch. Conley chipped in a sacrifice fly, and the Milkmen capped the frame on back-to-back, two-out RBI singles from Vertigan and Trowbridge. The Goldeyes jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. With two outs and no one on base, Milton Ramos was hit by a pitch and stole second. Dakota Conners tripled down the right field line to score Ramos. Zack Costello’s groundball to third resulted in a throwing error by Trowbridge that scored Conners. Kyle Martin led off the top of the third with a line drive home run to right-centre. Milkmen starter Myles Smith (1-0) picked up the win, allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits in five innings. Smith walked two and struck out five. Jorge Gonzalez (0-1) started for the Goldeyes and took the loss, allowing eight runs, seven earned, on eight hits in five innings. Gonzalez walked three and struck out three. The series concludes Thursday evening at 6:35 p.m. Christian James (0-0, 10.80) takes on right-hander Ryan Zimmerman (1-0, 1.29). All the action can be heard locally on CJNU 93.7 FM and worldwide at www.cjnu.ca The Goldeyes will continue to monitor the reopening of the Canada/US border and assess a potential return to Shaw Park in 2021. VIDEO: MAY 26 th GAME HIGHLIGHTS JASON YOUNG – WINNIPEG GOLDEYES – WEDNESDAY, MAY 26th LINK: https://www.aabaseball.tv/goldeyes-highlights/videos/26may21atmke MILKMEN BATS HEAT UP FOR FIRST HOME WIN OF THE SEASON WEDNESDAY NIGHT; THRASH GOLDEYES 11-3 JONATHAN MICHEL – MILWAUKEE MILKMEN – WEDNESDAY, MAY 26 th FRANKLIN, WI- The wind was blowing at Franklin Field and temperatures were rapidly dropping throughout nine innings, but the Milkmen bats were able to heat up throughout the order and end a two-game losing streak. Milwaukee threatened to take an early lead after Brett Vertigan and Logan Trowbridge both singled in the bottom of the first. Goldeyes hurler Jorge Gonzalez was able to make up for his mistake though, picking off Vertigan at first. Late lineup addition Liam Scafariello followed by hitting a screamer at Winnipeg third baseman Milton Ramos who made a jumping catch for the third out and extinguished any fire the Milkmen had. Myles Smith made his second start of the 2021 season after pitching in a relief role in 2020, but Winnipeg struck first for the second night in the row after Dakota Conners hit a triple to right field, scoring Ramos from second base. Winnipeg’s next hitter Zack Costello chopped a routine ground ball to third but a Trowbridge throwing error allowed Conners to score Winnipeg’s second run of the inning. After a quiet second inning for the Milkmen in the batter’s box, the Goldeyes wasted no time piling onto their advantage after Kyle Martin launched his third home run of the young season to lead off the top of the third. The Milkmen saw déjà vu with two runners reaching to start the bottom of the third. However, the Franklin Nine were more successful this time after catcher Christ Conley was hit by a pitch and second baseman Aaron Hill hit a seeing-eye single between third and second base. Conley came around to score after a Winnipeg error and Hill crossed home shortly afterwards thanks to a wild pitch from Winnipeg hurler Jorge Gonzalez. Logan Trowbridge tied the ballgame up at 3 after his ground out brought home a speedy Brett Vertigan. Recent acquisition Trey Martin started off the bottom of the fourth with a single for the Milkmen but the Goldeyes’ Gonzalez picked off his second Milkman of the night with a snap throw to send Martin back to the dugout. However, it wasn’t enough to keep Winnipeg safe from the danger of Aaron Hill, who clubbed a single to right center and brought home Davis to give Milwaukee a 4-3 lead after four innings. The single was Hill’s 10thof the year, good enough for second in the American Association.

  • 2010 CLAXTON 2010 in REVIEW! - by Peter Flintoff Section 1
Flintoff & Dunn’s AUSTRALIAN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL - 2010 CLAXTON 2010 IN REVIEW! - By Peter Flintoff Section 1 VICTORIA EMERGES TO WIN 22ND CLAXTON SHIELD - LAST OF THIS FORMAT? Under assurance that Australia’s new National Baseball League would definitely commence at the end of 2010, this 2009/10 Claxton Shield was proclaimed to be the last of its kind. Similar to the previous competition, this program was designed to be as close as possible to what the National League might bring as a kind of “forerunner” to the new competition. As another progressive upgrade from the previous year, each of the five major state teams were scheduled to play two three-game weekend series against each other state on a “home & away” basis. The schedule comprised more games than the previous season with the abandonment of the “Showcase Round” from the 2008/09 competition. Standard programming was for a Friday night game plus a Saturday afternoon/night double- header, however, separate games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights were scheduled for Perth as a variation to this. Rained-out and/or postponed games were re-scheduled to be added to weekend programs for the return series between the same teams. At the conclusion of the 24 preliminary games played by each team the top placed team on the table was automatically qualified to host the best-of-three Grand Final series. The second placed team would host the third placed team in a best-of-three semi-final series for the right to play in the Grand Final. This Claxton Shield review is not intended to

Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings November 21, 2012 CINCINNATI ENQUIRER Pitching is pricey, transactions By John Fay | 11/20/2012 12:17 PM ET Want to know why the Reds would be wise to lock up Homer Bailey and Mat Latos long-term? The Kansas City Royals agreed to a three-year deal with Jeremy Guthrie that pays him $5 million on 2013, $11 million in 2014 and $9 million in 2015. He went 8-12 with a 4.76 ERA and 1.41 WHIP. Bailey went 13-10 with a 3.68 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. Latos went 14-4 with a 2.48 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. It’s a bit apples and oranges: Guthrie is a free agent; Bailey is arbitration-eligible for the second time, Latos for the first. But the point is starting pitching — even mediocre starting pitching — is expensive. SIX ADDED: The Reds added right-handers Carlos Contreras, Daniel Corcino, Curtis Partch and Josh Ravin, left-hander Ismael Guillon and outfielder Yorman Rodriguez to the roster in order to protect them from the Rule 5 draft. Report: Former Red Frank Pastore badly hurt in motorcycle wreck By dclark | 11/20/2012 7:55 PM ET The Inland Valley Daily Bulletin is reporting that former Cincinnati Reds pitcher Frank Pastore, a Christian radio personality in California, was badly injured Monday night after being thrown from his motorcycle onto the highway near Duarte, Calif. From dailybulletin.com’s Juliette Funes: A 55-year-old motorcyclist from Upland was taken to a trauma center when his motorcycle was hit by a car on the 210 Freeway Monday night.
