' pretend to no style is simply an ' olla podrida \I ; my work from innumerable sources, good, bad, and indifferent. Some- times the most important events are merely sketched in, and at other times I enter into minute details, which would be gene- rally considered quite unimportant and uninteresting. But I have written this solely for my own family and neighbours at Swallowfield, and have therefore included everything that I thought might interest them. It is possible that I may occasionally have drawn from various authors without acknowledging my indebtedness, and of these I must ask pardon. Had I ever contemplated the publication of my notes, I should have been careful to give all my authorities ; as it is, I much regret that in some cases it is now impossible for me to do so. I had intended that this little work should be revised and vi Swallowfield and its Owners put into shape by one who took a great interest in it, and whose criticisms and suggestions I should have valued more than any- other, but fate has ordered it otherwise ; so I now send it forth in all its crudity, knowing that those for whom it is written will not be critical, and will excuse its shortcomings.

UNDERHILL of ETTINGTON The point where pedigrees emerge is usually, at the earliest, the period of the invention of the family surname. Family names did not exist in England until the twelfth or thirteenth centuries, when they began to be invented, and came gradually into general use with the growth of the population. Underhill or Underhull (“hill” and “hull” are variants of the same word in early English) is a good example of a topographical surname. There is no reason to doubt that a family bearing that name derives from an ancestor who lived under a hill. But as there are many hills with dwelling places built under their protection, it is natural that the name was invented more than once, and applied originally to more than one family, in diferent parts of the country. The place from which the Underhills of Warwickshire took their name can be identifed with certainty. In the parish of Bushbury, which adjoins Wolverhampton on the north east, there is Bushbury Hill, and on its eastern slope, sheltered from the westerly winds, there is a farm house which still bears the name of Underhill. The name can be traced in documents as far back as the year 1308 and it may well be much older than any extant document. The earliest mention in 1308 relates to a “tenement at Underhulle in Bisshebury” and names the then tenant as “Thomas, son of Robert de Underhulle of Bisshebury”. BEER DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2014 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Emerita Caroline Hibbard, Chair Associate Professor Clare Crowston Associate Professor Derek Neal, Nipissing University Associate Professor Carol Symes ABSTRACT This dissertation explores the reigns of two early sixteenth-century queens consort of England and Scotland, Catherine of Aragon (r. 1509-1533) and Margaret Tudor (r. 1503-1513). It examines the responsibilities, rights, duties, and actions of Catherine and Margaret within their sixteenth-century dynastic context, without a teleological focus on the controversies of their later lives. As the first wife of Henry VIII, Catherine of Aragon has often been portrayed as a pious and ultimately tragic figure whose reign has been overshadowed by her inability to bear a male heir. Margaret Tudor, Henry VIII’s sister and queen of James IV, has had her reign continually cast in the shadow of her husband’s tragic early death and her later disastrous career as regent of Scotland. Despite being the common subjects of popular histories, Catherine and Margaret are in fact understudied queens, neither of whom has been the subject of scholarly monographs for over fifty years. This work is the first to consider Catherine and Margaret since the emergence of a robust field of queenship studies, which has combined women’s and gender history with the study of international court culture and politics.

THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES PROB 11/48/372 1 ________________________________________________________________________ SUMMARY: The document below is the Prerogative Court of Canterbury copy of the last will and testament, dated 30 April 1563, together with a codicil dated 14 March 1564, proved 5 February 1566, of Sir John Leigh (1502-1564?), whose half brothers and sisters included Queen Katherine Howard; Oxford’s friend, Sir George Howard; and Margaret Howard, the mother of Oxford’s one-time friend and later bitter enemy, Charles Arundel (d.1587). The testator was among those knighted (as 'John a Lee') on 2 October 1553, the day after the coronation of Queen Mary. He was in Cardinal Wolsey's household as a youth, had travelled to Jerusalem before 1538, was a prisoner in the Tower in that year, was in Antwerp in September 1561, and was a friend of Sir Thomas Gresham. According to Gresham, the testator was 'the man that preserved me when Queen Mary came to the crown'. In 1541 the testator was called before the Privy Council to answer for having twice had contact with Cardinal Pole while on the continent. According to Warnicke, the testator’s half-sister, Queen Katherine Howard, had once 'obtained the release from prison of her kinsman John Legh', and it seems likely that it was on this occasion that the Queen exercised her influence on the testator’s behalf. The testator is perhaps best known for a quarrel with his kinsman, Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey. On 13 July 1542 Howard was committed to the 'pestilent ayres' of the Fleet by the Privy Council for having struck the testator.

History of Sevenoaks
Sevenoaks up to1650 Jean Fox 2002 Introduction "The present state of the Town (of Sevenoaks) itself is good and it seemeth to have been (for these many years together) in no worse plight: And yet find I not in all history, any memorable thing concerning it save only that, in the time of King Henry the sixth, Jack Cade, and his mischievous many, discomforted there Sir Humfrey Stafford and his brother, two noble gentlemen, whom the king had sent to encounter them". Other than the founding of the School by William Sennocke, this is all that William Lambarde, writing a description of Kent in 1570, could find to say about Sevenoaks1. William Lambarde, born on 18th October 1536, the eldest son of John Lambarde, Alderman of London and a wealthy London draper, became an antiquary and jurist 1 Lambarde, p.470. He gives the name of the town as "Sennocke or (as some call it) Seven oke, of a number of trees as they conjecture" 1 and, in 1570, he wrote the Perambulation of Kent which gives an insight into life in Kent in the second half of the sixteenth century. The aim of this work is to describe the development of Sevenoaks, a medium-sized town in Kent, up to 1650 using the wills which have survived and other contemporary sources to highlight specific aspects of the life of people living in the neighbourhood. The basic approach is chronological but, because particular families and topics can cover a long period, it has sometimes been necessary for topics to take precedence over chronology.
