SEPTIEMBRE 2021 1. DATOS BÁSICOS Santa Lucia 1.1. Características generales Nombre oficial: Santa Lucía Superficie: 616 km² Población: 178,900 hab. (2019) Edad media de la población: 33,5 años Grupos étnicos: afrodescendientes 85,3%, mestizo 10,99% indios 2,2%, otros 1,6%. Capital: Castries. Es, además, la ciudad más grande donde reside más de un tercio de la población. Otras ciudades relativamente importantes son Soufrière, Mar Caribe donde se ubican algunos manantiales y emanaciones sulfurosas del volcán Qualibou y Vieux Fort, donde se ubica el aeropuerto internacional del Sur. Idiomas: Inglés (oficial). También se hablan el kweyol y algunas lenguas crio- Castries llas derivadas del francés en gran medida, como el criollo. Religión: católicos 61,5%, protestantes 25,5% (con una mayoría de adven- tistas del Séptimo Día, Baptistas y Anglicanos). Moneda: Dólar del Caribe Oriental (EC$) (Aprox. 3 EC = 1 €). Geografía Soufriere Estado insular de las Antillas Occidentales, Santa Lucía se encuentra a una distancia de 40 km al S de la Martinica, de la que está separada por el canal de Santa Lucía, y a 32 km al N de la isla de San Vicente, en el mar Caribe. Micoud La isla de Santa Lucía es de formación geológica volcánica, a semejanza de las restantes islas del Caribe sur. Contiene numerosas montañas densamente arboladas, que derivan de norte a sur y de las que nacen innumerables arroyos que descienden hasta los fértiles valles. La máxima altura es el monte Gieme, Choised de 959 m, y en la región suroeste hay dos picos volcánicos, el Gros Piton, de 799 m y el Petit Piton, de 750 m, flanqueando la bahía. Cerca de la ciudad de Océano Atlántico Soufrière, al suroeste, se encuentra el volcán Qualibou, cuya última erupción Vieux Fort tuvo lugar en 1766, pero mantiene solfataras, manantiales de agua sulfurosa hirviente que emiten vapores y gases. © Ocina de Información Diplomática. Indicadores sociales El Poder Judicial está encabezado por la Suprema Corte del Caribe Oriental, cuya jurisdicción se extiende no sólo a Santa Lucía sino a Anguila, Antigua y IDH (Valor numérico/nº orden mundial) (2019): 0.745 / 89 Barbuda, las Islas Vírgenes Británicas, Dominica, Granada, Montserrat, San Esperanza de vida al nacer: 76,1 Cristóbal y Nieves y San Vicente y las Granadinas. Índice de GINI: 51,2 (2016). Densidad poblacional: 260 hab/km² Los principales partidos políticos son el Partido Laborista de Santa Lucía Población urbana: 28% (“Saint Lucia Labour Party”) y el Partido Unido de los Trabajadores (“United Índice de pobreza (% de población con menos de 1,25 $/día): 20,93 Workers Party” / UWP).     THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT SYSTEM IN saint LUCIA COUNTRY PROFILE 2017–18 SAINT LUCIA SUMMARY Saint Lucia is a constitutional monarchy with two levels of government: national and local. The constitution makes reference to local government but contains no specific provisions. The main legislative text governing local government is the Constituency Councils Act 2012. Local elections were suspended in 1979, and since then the Minister of Local Government is responsible for the appointment of all councillors. There are ten administrative quarters within Saint Lucia, which contain 15 constituency councils. In 2016/17, 45.3% of appointed councillors were women and in 2015/16 local government expenditure was 2.0% of total government expenditure. The functions and responsibilities of local government have been discharged by centralised authorities since 1980, and many of the services provided are carried out in tandem with other governmental agencies. 1. For this we are thankful for His favour. It has become the convention in the House of Assembly and in the Senate, that our first duty when assembled, is to show our obeisance to Him who made us to know Him, love Him and serve Him: that love to be shown equally by our love for one another.
