We want to broaden the community aspect of community radio by supporting local stations to create an environment in which young people not only have the opportunity to broadcast but can get involved in all areas of the station and the sector. We can do this by working together to cultivate a culture of participation, access, diversity, innovation and independence for young people in their local community radio station. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF GETTING YOUNG PEOPLE INVOLVED IN YOUR STATION? There are so many! But here are just a few to start.... For the station... young voices provide freshness, alternate perspectives and variety to your program grid. Plus, further youth engagement creates the opportunity to tap in to new audiences and open up to different sections of your community For the young people...the opportunity to participate in community radio heightens confidence, communication skills and a sense of empowerment and belonging. Including and supporting young people in your station may require veering away from the usual approach to recruiting and engaging volunteers - and the best way forward will differ station-to-station. Flexibility and adaptability are key to engaging young people in a meaningful way - and it can be done! SYN Nation is at the intersection of the local and the national, featuring diverse content from all corners of the country SYN Nation is an initiative designed to give young people from non-metro areas of Australia the opportunity to gain valuable skills in broadcast, media and leadership. Working collaboratively with community radio stations from around the country, SYN has been able to provide over eighty young people from diverse regional areas such as Warrnambool, Gippsland, Hobart, Canberra and Byron Bay with a national audience for their radio programs. Support the formation of a Media Hub at your community radio station A Media Hub is a group of young people getting together to produce radio content and develop their media skills for local and national broadcast. Each Media Hub runs in collaboration with a local community radio station, SYN and other local not-for-profit organisations. In the first year of the SYN Nation project, SYN has supported the successful formation of Media Hubs in a number of community radio stations through providing resources and training. Partner stations provide local contact, use of facilities and - importantly - a safe, inclusive space for young people. A Hub Leader is recruited to coordinate the Hub volunteers and facilitate training and communications with both SYN and the local station, supported extensively by SYN's National Project Coordinator. SYN Media Hubs facilitate positive socialisation, participation and enable support and training to be tailored for the needs of the young people involved. Local community radio station Other local organisations SYN Media Hub We want this project to help local community radio stations around the country to engage more young people than ever before. SYN Nation brings these communities of young people together and now features over 18 hours of content every week from broadcasters in Warrnambool, Perth, Canberra, Hobart, Byron Bay, Gippsland and Melbourne - with more to come. OPPORTUNITIES WITH SYN SYN can provide station volunteers, staff and management with support and advice to engage young people - just give us a call Young people from your community have the opportunity to attend SYN-run training workshops in Melbourne and will soon have access to online learning materials Get a national audience for local content produced by young people from your community radio station - SYN Nation streams live online Australia-wide!
