170 Constructing Contemporary Nationhood in the Museums and Heritage Centres of Catalonia Colin Breen*, Wes Forsythe**, John Raven*** Abstract Geographically, Spain consists of a complex mosaic of cultural identities and regional aspirations for varying degrees of autonomy and independence. Following the end of violent conflict in the Basque country, Catalonia has emerged as the most vocal region pursuing independence from the central Spanish state. Within the Catalan separatist movement, cultural heritage sites and objects have been appropriated to play an intrinsic role in supporting political aims, with a variety of cultural institutions and state-sponsored monumentality playing an active part in the formation and dissemination of particular identity-based narratives. These are centred around the themes of a separate and culturally distinct Catalan nation which has been subject to extended periods of oppression by the varying manifestations of the Spanish state. This study addresses the increasing use of museums and heritage institutions to support the concept of a separate and distinctive Catalan nation over the past decade. At various levels, from the subtle to the blatant, heritage institutions are propagating a message of cultural difference and past injustice against the Catalan people, and perform a more consciously active, overt and supportive role in the independence movement. Key words: Catalonia, museums, heritage, identity, nationhood Across contemporary Europe a range of nationalist and separatist movements are again gaining momentum (Borgen 2010). From calls for independence in Scotland and the divisive politics of the Flemish and Walloon communities in Belgium, to the continually complicated political mosaic of the Balkan states, there are now a myriad of movements striving for either greater or full autonomy for their region or peoples. -

Summary: This paper presents the development of the Historic Charter of Barcelona. The CHB is a research compiling, to date, all knowledge about the urban history of the city and its documentary and cartographic sources via an online tool made for researchers and citizens with the aim of explaining the history of Barcelona through 26 maps. Introduction From the foundation of Barcino around 10 BC, Barcelona has been exhaustively drawn. The number and diversity of cartographic representations of the city is massive, since portolan charts mapping the seas in the fourteenth century to contemporary digital maps imagining 1992 Olympic City. This cartographic construction has eventually consolidated the imagery of the city. Perspectives and maps reflect the distinctive social and economic conditions of each period to the point of becoming a powerful instrument that will serve, especially from the nineteenth century, to project the image of the city into the future (Santamaria-Varas & Diez-Martinez, 2016). The first images of the city placed special emphasis on the topography of the territory and the control of the waterfront and walls. If the portolan charts (Pujades, 2007) of Vallseca (1444) and Bertran (1456, 1489) represented a partial vision of Barcelona focusing on emblematic Montjuïc, the Hill defining- element of the city viewed from the sea (Fig. 1), the first global images of Barcelona created by painters and travellers such as Anton Van Wyndergaerde (1563). -

Its very simple - you have to love what you do. I remember in my early days as a trainee print sales man, I would have discussions with my Sales Manager about the 80 or so cold calls I had made in that day. He would tell me that I needed to smile on the phone! At first I thought he was crazy. What did it matter if I was not smiling on a phone call? The person on the other end cannot tell either way, right? Wrong! Within ten seconds of starting a sales call, a prospect would be able to tell if they are talking to beauty or the beast. I learned that smiling actually helped with the tone of my voice, and it is one way of positively affecting its inflection. Without smiling you can sound monotone and therefore come across as boring, or worse uninterested in the sales call you initiated. The reason is not psychological but rather physiological. When you smile, the soft palate at the back of your mouth raises and makes the sound waves more fluid. Smiling helps your voice sound friendly, warm, and receptive. I began to have a cavalier approach to sales calls. I never worried about not closing the deal, I started to have fun with the calls….. And do you know what? It got results. The more fun I had, the more deals I would close and I thought less of the calls that never went anywhere at all. -

In this study, we evaluate the effects of creating 18 green spaces in socially vulnerable neighborhoods of Barcelona during the 1990s and early 2000s. Combining OLS and GWR analysis together with a spatial descriptive analysis, we examined the evolution over time of six socio-demographic gentrification indicators in the areas in proximity to green spaces in comparison with the entire district. Our results indicate that parks built in parts of the old town and in formerly industrialized neighborhoods of Barcelona seem to have experienced green gentrification trends. In contrast, most economically depressed areas and working class neighborhoods with less desirable housing stock that are more isolated from the city center gained vulnerable residents as they became greener, indicating a possible redistribution and higher concentration of vulnerable residents through the city as neighborhoods undergo processes of urban (re)development. -

Towards a Social Archeological Conservation in Barcelona Hacia una conservación arqueológica social en Barcelona Ana Pastor Pérez University of Barcelona PhD Cadidate of the Programme Society and Culture [email protected] Recibido: 13-07-2016 Aceptado: 10-09-2016 Abstract This paper aims to explore the relationship between cultural policies and the inhanbitants that live surrounded by urban archaeological spaces in the centre of Barcelona, such as the area of Sotstinent Navarro. This study will focus on the concept of conservation on two perspectives. Firstly, how the role of conservation can be understood regarding heritage management. Secondly, how conservation itself can be discerned as a tool for social inclusion. I will also briefly anal- yse the Spanish state in relation to the concept of conservation and illustrate my analysis with examples of important archaeological urban landscapes of Barcelona. Throughout this text, I will analyze whether participation is a useful tool in heritage and how it has had different uses through time, analyzing the position of the different stakeholders on these processes. The analysis will be driven on the basis of different research lines of studies in cultural heritage but also on Public and Community archaeology, bridging those disciplines with what several authors have defined as the search of a social sustainability applied on our case to urban archaeological sites. This article will serve to develop a theoretical frame of future community-driven con- servation management methodologies, applied to archaeological urban heritage plans as a measure to increase social benefits for the inhabitants. 30 NUART JOURNAL 2019 VOLUME 1 NUMBER 2 30–35 GRAFFITI AS GIFT: STREET ART’S CONCEPTUAL EMERGENCE Lindsey Mancini Yale School of Art Drawing primarily on contemporary public discourse, this article aims to identify a divergence between graffiti and street art, and to establish street art as an independent art movement, the examples of which can be identified by an artist’s desire to create a work that offers value – a metric each viewer is invited to assess for themselves. While graffiti and street art are by no means mutually exclusive, street art fuses graffiti’s subversive reclamation of space with populist political leanings and the art historically- informed theoretical frameworks established by the Situationists and Dadaism. Based on two founding principles: community and ephemerality, street art is an attempt to create a space for visual expression outside of existing power structures, weaving it into the fabric of people’s daily lives.
