The languages are at the same time innovative and archaic, and are of great interest for areal-typological research. This study investigates grammatical gender in a 12-language sample in the area from an areal-typological perspective. The results show some intriguing features, including unexpected loss of gender, languages that have developed a gender system based on the semantic category of animacy, and languages where this animacy distinction is present parallel to the inherited gender system based on a masculine/feminine distinction found in many Indo-Aryan languages. A Comparative Phonetic Study of the Circassian Languages1 AYLA APPLEBAUM and MATTHEW GORDON University of California, Santa Barbara Introduction This paper presents results of a phonetic study of Circassian languages. Three phonetic properties were targeted for investigation: voice-onset time for stop consonants, spectral properties of the coronal fricatives, and formant values for vowels. Circassian is a branch of the Northwest Caucasian language family, which also includes Abhaz-Abaza and Ubykh. Circassian is divided into two dialectal subgroups: West Circassian (commonly known as Adyghe), and East Circassian (also known as Kabardian). The West Circassian subgroup includes Temirgoy, Abzekh, Hatkoy, Shapsugh, and Bzhedugh. East Circassian comprises Kabardian and Besleney. The Circassian languages are indigenous to the area between the Caspian and Black Seas but, since the Russian invasion of the Caucasus region in the middle of the 19th century, the majority of Circassians now live in diaspora communities, most prevalently in Turkey but also in smaller outposts throughout the Middle East and the United States. -

Introduction A stunning result of linguistic research in the 19th century was the recognition that some languages show correspondences of form that cannot be due to chance convergences, to borrowing among the languages involved, or to universal characteristics of human language, and that such correspondences therefore can only be the result of the languages in question having sprung from a common source language in the past. Such languages are said to be “related” (more specifically, “genetically related”, though “genetic” here does not have any connection to the term referring to a biological genetic relationship) and to belong to a “language family”. It can therefore be convenient to model such linguistic genetic relationships via a “family tree”, showing the genealogy of the languages claimed to be related. For example, in the model below, all the languages B through I in the tree are related as members of the same family; if they were not related, they would not all descend from the same original language A. In such a schema, A is the “proto-language”, the starting point for the family, and B, C, and D are “offspring” (often referred to as “daughter languages”); B, C, and D are thus “siblings” (often referred to as “sister languages”), and each represents a separate “branch” of the family tree. B and C, in turn, are starting points for other offspring languages, E, F, and G, and H and I, respectively. Thus B stands in the same relationship to E, F, and G as A does to B, C, and D. -

Why is a broader Afroasiatic perspective useful for the study of Semitic March 10, 2014 Lutz Edzard, University of Erlangen-Nürnberg and University of Oslo 1 Introductory remarks: internal classification Even though the topic of this introductory chapter is not genealogical sub- grouping per se, it may be useful to briefly consider both the inner structure of Semitic, which, at least from a synchronic perspective, is by now more or less uncontroversial, and the wider structure of the Afroasiatic1 macro-family, whose inner structure continues to be under discussion. Leaving aside the question of a Semitic Urheimat, which is still highly controversial, one has sug- gested models based on shared innovations or isoglosses such as the one on the following page. Faber (1997: 6), taking up and developing proposals inter alia by Hetzron (1976), Goldenberg (1977), and Huehnergard (1990), provides a model based on the following list of basic isoglosses: – East Semitic is characterized by the development of an adjectival ending -ūt (pl. m.) and by the dative suffixes -kum and -šum; – West Semitic is characterized by the suffix conjugation denoting past tense (as opposed to the Akkadian stative) and a prohibitive negator ʾal; – “Central Semitic” is characterized by a series of pharyngealized consonants, a prefix conjugation without gemination of the second root consonant and the leveling of prefix vowels in this conjugation, -

Helmut Satzinger Dialectical Variation of the Egyptian-Coptic Language in the Course of Its Four Millennia of Attested History Abstract A language with a long documented history may be expected to show a great deal of dialectal diversity. For Egyptian-Coptic there are particular conditions. Except for the Delta, the country is one-dimensional, a feature that may make the distribution of dialectal differences simpler than in a country with a normal areal extension. Another specific feature is that all Egyptian idioms that precede Coptic are transmitted without the vowels, thereby obscuring all vocalic differences (which play such a great role in Coptic dialect variation). However, recent research has revealed that in the earliest stages of Egyptian language history there was a drastic dialectal gap. The feature best visible is the phonetic value and the etymology of graphemesˁ ayin and ȝ. hen Herodotus said that Egypt is a gift of the Nile, he was speaking of Lower Egypt, of the Delta: this wholeW area, with a north–south extension of ca. 170 km (in a bee-line) and an east–west extension of ca. 260 km, owes its existence to all the soil that the river Nile has brought down from the Sudan in the course of a long time-span. However, most people think that he wanted to say that Egypt (as we intend it), from the Tropic of Cancer to the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, would not exist without the waters of the Nile, as there would be nothing but desert. Egypt is bipartite: on the one hand, a small country like others, of triangular shape; on the other, the two long and narrow shores of a river that crosses an endless desert. -

The paper first elaborates on the many functions of the enclitic morpheme =g ‘manner’ in Kambaata (Highland East Cushitic), which is used, among others, as a marker of the standard in similative and equative comparison (‘like’, ‘as’), of temporal clauses of immediate anteriority (‘as soon as’), of complement clauses (‘that’) and, most notably, of purpose clauses (‘in order to’). -

Word classes in Egyptian, Semitic and Cushitic (Afroasiatic) Elsa Oréal and Martine Vanhove 27.1 Introduction Today, the exact number of living Afroasiatic languages is still disputed, with upwards of 375 languages, though the actual number may be less (for a discussion, see Frajzyngier and Shay (2012: 1). The number of speakers is probably around 300,000,000. The languages are spoken in Northern and Central Africa, the Horn of Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, the Near and Middle East, and Central Asia (Arabic only). Afroasiatic (AA) is the phylum with the longest written record: Over five millennia. Thus, it provides linguists with a wealth of documentation that, among other things, shows the fluidity of some word categories on a long-term scale. Nevertheless, this exceptional time-depth only applies to three of the six Afroasiatic families.
