  • THE YOUNG GODS Bio 2010
THE YOUNG GODS Bio 2010 Twenty five years and still no sign of wearing out. However youthful and godlike your name claims you are, it is still quite an impressive feat. Bigger, stronger, higher, the Young Gods chose a manic pace five years ago and they are taking no break in 2010. Never let routine get the best of you, always go forward, this is the new moto of the Swiss trio, now a fourtet since Vincent Hänni, the creative sidekick of many years, has become a full time member. Let us be clear, 2010 is going to be quite the year in the band’s prolific history; not only because of their fascinating new album („Everybody Knows“) but also because of the audio-video boxset of their recent and diverse sonic adventures. Their twentieth anniversary, celebrated on the prestigious stage of the Montreux Jazz Festival two nights in a row with, amongst others, the participation of a symphonic orchestra, marked the beginning of a frantic course of action for the band. After a best of ("XX Years 1985-2005" packed with surprises) and a musical magazine soundtrack for Truce Diaries, they went straight into the excellent "Super Ready / Fragmenté" album, where they bravely linked psychedelic experimentations with brutal punk abandon. Even then, the biggest shocks were to come on stage. The Young Gods took their audiences on a faux- acoustic musical journey, creating in the same breath one of their most impressive albums: the timeless "Knock On Wood". Once again, they turned the whole musical formula on its back and, for one mythical show at Les Eurockéennes, unleashed their collaboration with electro hip-hop pioneers Dälek, followed closely with the Barbouze De Chez Fior string quartet performances and finishing the collaborative trilogy with Koch-Schuetz-Studer ("More To Come" in 2010).

  • Musician Neneh Cherry on Addressing Politics in Your Art
October 29, 2018 - As told to T. Cole Rachel, 2891 words. Tags: Music, Politics, Process, Collaboration. On addressing politics in your art Musician Neneh Cherry on what makes a good a collaborator, the headspace required for making thoughtful art, and why sometimes being quiet is a radical act. What’s the kind of headspace you need to be in when you’re working on music? It’s somewhat different every time, but recently I had a place that I wanted to go in my spirit and soul, through the songs and with the songs. I knew it was going to need me to be in a more… not a static place, exactly, but a more still place. It was almost like I could feel the songs around my head. Of course, the collaborative journey played an important part in actually reaching the goal. In the case of Broken Politics, I think we reached the goal I had in mind. I work with Cameron McVey, who is my husband and my creative partner, beyond just the spousal stuff. We’ve also had a very intimate creative journey. Quite often we’re working with other programmers and musicians when we’re writing, so there are all of these different things to figure out and negotiate. He’s a really fast writer. I’m a much slower writer. A lot of the time we’re in the studio by ourselves, each working at our own pace. Sometimes, even when you have an idea of where you want to go, it’s still a struggle getting there and getting past all the little weird obstacle courses that your brain sets up for you in order to get to that place where you’re creatively open.

  • My Love of Music
My Love of Music My name is Gail and I want to share about some of the music and stories of my life. My love of music starting when my Dad's cousin gave the family loads of new records, probably 'falling out a lorry'. Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Animals, Dusty Springfield – I loved playing the records on the radiogram - and a radiogram is a piece of furniture that combined a radio and record player. I loved Tamla Motown, Four Tops, Little Stevie Wonder. Georgie Fame, and on TV watching Ready, Steady, Go, Juke Box Jury. I was listening to the 'Pirates Radio' – Radio Caroline, Radio London, and Radio Luxembourg. The songs that remind me of the 70s I lived in Muswell Hill, and I discovered West End clubs – The Roaring Twenties, La Valbonne, Birds Nest, Gullivers, The Pourbelle, Anabelle, Tramps, Ronnie Scotts, Blues parties, etc., etc., etc. Reggae, Disco, Soca, Jazz and Soul. I worked as a PA for a record company and later worked with the owner of West End clubs and I met a long list of ‘celebrities.’ Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley, Luddy from the Pioneers, The Drifters, George McCrea, The Harlem Globetrotters, Hot Chocolate, Viola Wills, Sex Pistols, Nina Simone, etc. etc. – and we all go to the ‘Kandy Box’ a basement club in Kingsley Street, after-work or show 2 am – 7 am. (even CJ Carlos and Q Club (with Smokey Joe) on Sunday night Marvin Gaye- What’s Going On An album in 1971 helped people to open their minds. About racial, the Vietnam War, drug abuse, poverty and ecological.
