HARTY OUTDOES FORMER BOSS IN LA BREA CHARLATAN TURNS by Alan Carasso MALIBU INTO For 14 years, Irishman Eoin Harty worked as the right-hand man to trainer , helping oversee the careers of the ONE-HORSE AFFAIR dual Classic-winning duo of Silver Charm (1997) and Real Quiet (1998) among many other luminaries. For the last two decades, Harty has served as an American-based conditioner for Godolphin, having developed the likes of Street Cry (Ire), Tempera--whom he trained to a victory in the 2001 GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies--and Dubai Escapade. Now 58 and a decade removed from his most recent Grade I success, Harty back in the spotlight following a 20-1 upset by Fair Maiden (Street Boss) in Saturday’s GI La Brea S. at Santa Anita. Golden Principal (Constitution) and Merneith () completed a 2-3 finish for the Baffert barn.

IN TDN EUROPE TODAY Charlatan (blue shadow roll) claims Nashville (right) turning for home in Saturday’s GI Runhappy Malibu S. | Benoit SEASON OF CHANGE AT HARAS D’ETREHAM Emma Berry takes a closer look at the sire-making establishment by Alan Carasso Haras d’Etreham, which welcomes Hello Youmzain and Persian King in 2021. Click or tap here to go straight to TDN Europe. A pair of Speightstown ‘TDN Rising Stars’--Nashville and Charlatan--looked to have their four rivals over a barrel in Saturday’s GI Runhappy Malibu S., the traditional post-Christmas opening day feature at Santa Anita Park. The former had the benefit of recency, his three wins from as many starts coming by 24 3/4 lengths combined, while the latter was resurfacing for the first time since crossing the line best in the slightly slower of the two divisions of the GI Arkansas Derby May 2. Nashville was sent off the 13-10 favorite to continue his streak, but Charlatan belied his absence with a thoroughly dominating victory, treating those who maintained the faith to a relatively juicy $5.20 as the second betting choice. Express Train () and Collusion Illusion ( Candy) filled out the minors, as Nashville struggled home a well-beaten fourth. “They were rolling early, there was a really good horse he was chasing,” said Baffert. “I’m just happy for the whole team and everybody involved, to show he is a really special horse. Hopefully, we will have a good year [2021] with him.”

Runhappy Malibu S. cont. The early part of the Malibu played out as most pace handicappers had mapped it--Nashville was quickest out and made the lead with a minimum of fuss, and Charlatan--perhaps not quite as brilliantly fast--was content to chase from second beneath Hall of Famer Mike Smith. Nashville’s opening couple of furlongs were covered in :21.81 and his half-mile split of :43.95 was in line with the :43.87 he’d clocked in winning his debut at Saratoga Sept. 2 and again in his Perryville S. romp Nov. 7. Comparisons with those two races ended right about the quarter pole. Nashville was confronted by Charlatan, but the colt offered little resistance, and Charlatan was off and gone, geared down by Smith in the final 100 yards to score with something left in the tank.

Horsephotos “To run against these types of horses was a feat itself, but I always thought he was a special horse,” said Smith, who won the Malibu aboard McKinzie (Street Sense) and Beach (War Front) in 2018 and 2019, respectively. “I’ve had the opportunity to watch him, California is his home base, so I’ve seen a lot of him and always wanted a chance to ride him. When Bob told me I got the call, man I’ve been kind of on cloud nine ever since. He is extremely special.” Charlatan was deemed a no-brainer ‘Rising Star’ off a 5 3/4-length thrashing of the solid Shooters Shoot (Competitive Edge) on his Feb. 16 debut before treating future GSW Rushie (Liam’s Map) to a 10 1/4-length beating in a one-mile allowance Mar. 14. Forced to ship out of town when coronavirus put a halt to racing locally shortly thereafter, Charlatan was 40 cents on the dollar and reported home six lengths to the good at Oaklawn in early May, only to be disqualified for a drug positive. Charlatan was being pointed for the first leg of the reconstituted Triple Crown--the June 20 GI Belmont S.--but suffered an ankle injury and had not been heard from since. DUOPOLY RUNS THEM RAGGED IN AMERICAN OAKS by Alan Carasso Having sent out Klaravich Stable’s Competitionofideas (Speightstown) to win his first GI American Oaks two years ago, trainer Chad Brown was back at it again Saturday afternoon, as Klaravich’s Duopoly (Animal Kingdom) was given a beautifully rated ride from the front by Frenchman Flavien Prat and had plenty left late to post a mild upset at odds of 6-1. Going to Vegas (Goldencents) stayed on gamely for second ahead of favored ‘TDN Rising Star’ Sharing (Speightstown), who just earned a photo for third. Duopoly appeared the speed of the field and so it proved, as Prat kicked her straight into the lead as they raced down the hill, but John Velazquez was content on keeping Sharing closer to whatever pace eventuated. Duopoly switched off nicely through opening splits of :24.91 and :49.67, but the same could not be said for Sharing, who wanted to overrace and pulled hard through the middle stages. SAY HELLO, DUBAI WORLD CUP PURSE REMAINS AT US$12M FOR 2021 WAVE GOODBYE Dubai Racing Club announced that the Dubai World Cup purse- -sponsored by Emirates Airline--has been retained at US$12Million and that the deadline for free nominations to the 25th renewal of the race will be extended through Jan. 20, 2021. Hosted at Meydan Racecourse, the 2000-meter event, which will be run Mar. 27, 2021, includes six Group 1 and three Group 2 races. Last year a total of 1,774 nominations were accepted from 902 horses trained in 21 countries. Purses for the remaining eight races are slightly reduced from prior renewals, however, purse structure will be modified to allow for payment all the way down an 8th-place finish in all races on the night.

Haras d=Etreham=s 2021 stallion roster if highlighted by Cont. p4 Hello Youmzain and Persian King By Emma Berry It has been a year of change at Haras d'Etreham. In August it IN TDN AMERICA TODAY was announced that the farm's flagship stallion (GB) had been sold to Coolmore. The dominant Irish operation CHARLATAN FLIES HOME IN MALIBU was wise to catch a rising tide but it is Etreham, and in particular Charlatan (Speightstown) silenced his detractors once and for all Nicolas de Chambure, who must be credited with establishing with a tour-de-force performance in Saturday’s GI Runhappy the increasingly popular stallion. Malibu S. at Santa Anita. Click or tap here to go straight to TDN America. If we accept the conservative estimate that only one in 10 stallions really make it, then it is clear that finding Wootton Bassett's replacement will be no easy task. Perhaps Etreham already has a worthy successor in his first-crop champion son (Fr). Time will tell. And as back up, the farm welcomes two new stallions this year, both Group 1 winners, both by hugely popular sires, and one of them a Classic winner. Most farms would welcome the chance to start the career of Persian King (GB) or Hello Youmzain (Fr). Etreham has the golden opportunity of launching them both together, having kept the latter in training for 2020 after buying him the previous season in partnership with New Zealand's Cambridge Stud. Persian King, who was raced by Godolphin in partnership with his breeder Ballymore Thoroughbred, also raced on at four, adding the G1 Prix d'Ispahan and G1 Prix du Moulin to his victory in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains at three, as well as finishing an honourable third in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe as his parting shot before retirement.

Haras d=Etreham feature cont. from p1 Though sprinting was clearly his game, Hello Youmzain could "Persian King is one of the best sons of Kingman so he was well be multi-dimensional as a stallion prospect. His dam Spasha attractive to many studs around Europe," says de Chambure. They saw something that they didn't think he mares with a just a little bit more stamina I'm sure he will be was capable of doing. We don't see that much these days, able to. And we hope for that because I always like a stallion trainers trying something a bit different with their horses. The winner of the G2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte in his He added, "When we buy a stallion prospect their sire is very debut season, Hello Youmzain made two successful trips to important so the fact that he is by Kingman is a big plus. It gives Haydock at three to win the G2 Sandy Lane S. followed by the French breeders access to that sireline." G1 Betfair Sprint Cup. For most stallion operations that would Thanks to Haras d'Etreham and Cambridge Stud, French have been enough but, in announcing their purchase of him in breeders now also have easy access to a son of Kodiac (GB) in October 2019, the partners also declared that he would remain the dual Group 1-winning sprinter Hello Youmzain. While there in training at four. is a growing throng of Kodiac's stallion sons in Ireland and "I think I'll always do that," said de Chambure of a decision Britain, the former Kevin Ryan trainee is the first to retire to which was not without its risks. "The last really good one to retire was was the easy thing to do. But I feel we are all retiring horses too . This is something a little bit new, and when we found soon these days--stallions and mares. We are driven by the out that he could be bought last year as a 3-year-old it didn't whole economy of the thing but we are all in the industry to take us too long to make up our minds. And we were very happy have horses to win races, and for me that must be the most also to keep him in training this year because he won another important thing rather than the economy around it. When you Group 1 for us and was second in the Maurice de Gheest. He continued, AWe have enough stallions, we have enough mares, and I think we need to enjoy the sport more. Obviously, prize-money doesn't help in Europe but I still think we need to give the horses more exposure and keep them running more. So in the end, yes, it was a little bit of a risk, but we were happy to do it." With the size of modern-day stallion books being a bone of contention in the industry, breeders may take some comfort in the knowledge that the Etreham horses are limited to 140 mares in a season, including the newcomers. "We do the same for all our stallions, the National Hunt stallions as well," de Chambure said. "We just feel it is creating a little bit of a rarity and it's a way to respect the breeders' investment in a share, or a nomination. They know they have a foal or a yearling that has a certain value because the market is not loaded with them. There are different ways to help breeders and I feel it is one of the good ways to help them to create value."
