Barcode and Other Identifiers Barcode: 6 34479 25832 9 Comments about Live At The John Anson Ford Ampitheatre - Lionel Hampton & His Big Band Kipabi Probably the last recording by vibraphonist, who was in his nineties and in ill health, so he is a shadow of his former self on stage, though he gamely tries to execute the performances he became known for well into his eighties. His big band shines, as do the Gerald Wiggins Trio, Sweets Edison and Ernie Andrews (with an assist from Teddy Edwards). One other gripe is the lack of proofreading in the booklet. A number of names are misspelled, one is incomplete and the credits for one brass instrument list "trumbone." Comedian Steve Allen's introduction of Lionel Hampton makes fun of his slow entrance to the stage (likely following a stroke), one of the rare times where Allen wasn't funny. Music, Film, and Education ^ LACMA Public Programs September 2014 Talk: The Art of Wine: Wine in Music: An Afternoon with the Ahn Outdoor Session: Photography Family Dynamic: Ingrid Calame the Age of Expressionism Sook Sun Ensemble at LACMA and Shelby Roberts with Willa TALKS & COURSES Symposium: Locating Expressionism Saturday, September 6 | 10 am –4 pm Sunday, September 7 | 10 am –4 pm Free and open to the public Noted art historians and scholars convene in this two-day symposium on the occasion of the exhibition Expressionism in Germany and France: From Van Gogh to Kandinsky to shed new light on the extraordinary response of artists in Germany and France to key developments in modern art in the early 20th century. For the first time in a major museum exhibition, LACMA presents Expressionism not as a distinctly German style, but as an international movement in which artists responded with various aesthetic approaches to the work of modern masters. The German side of the story has been less well known in the United States until just recently, and LACMA's groundbreaking exhibition provides visitors and scholars alike an opportunity to explore the nuances of the interrelationship between a group of artists that includes not just Van Gogh and Kandinsky, but Henri Matisse, Georges Braque, Andre Derain, Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, and many others. Sponsored by the museum and the Historians of German and Central European Art, topics presented explore in depth the relationship between French art and Germany artists, Cubism's impact, and the impact of non-Western art on European art from this era.

  • 1959 Jazz: a Historical Study and Analysis of Jazz and Its Artists and Recordings in 1959
GELB, GREGG, DMA. 1959 Jazz: A Historical Study and Analysis of Jazz and Its Artists and Recordings in 1959. (2008) Directed by Dr. John Salmon. 69 pp. Towards the end of the 1950s, about halfway through its nearly 100-year history, jazz evolution and innovation increased at a faster pace than ever before. By 1959, it was evident that two major innovative styles and many sub-styles of the major previous styles had recently emerged. Additionally, all earlier practices were in use, making a total of at least ten actively played styles in 1959. It would no longer be possible to denote a jazz era by saying one style dominated, such as it had during the 1930s’ Swing Era. This convergence of styles is fascinating, but, considering that many of the recordings of that year represent some of the best work of many of the most famous jazz artists of all time, it makes 1959 even more significant. There has been a marked decrease in the jazz industry and in stylistic evolution since 1959, which emphasizes 1959’s importance in jazz history. Many jazz listeners, including myself up until recently, have always thought the modal style, from the famous 1959 Miles Davis recording, Kind of Blue, dominated the late 1950s. However, a few of the other great and stylistically diverse recordings from 1959 were John Coltrane’s Giant Steps, Ornette Coleman’s The Shape of Jazz To Come, and Dave Brubeck’s Time Out, which included the very well- known jazz standard Take Five. My research has found many more 1959 recordings of equally unique artistic achievement.

Now in its 48th year, this signature event is a treasure for the N university, the state and beyond. I attended my first festival last year, and I was thrilled to witness the unique combination of artistic endeavor and education, a dynamic program epitomizing and befitting our Vandal legacy of leadership and innovation. Mary Beth missed the festival last year, so we look forward to enjoying it together this year. The multifaceted celebration of culture and learning earned the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival the National Medal of the Arts, the first time the nation’s top arts honor has been bestowed on a public university. The festival has also earned the university the Peter McGrath Community Engagement Exemplary Program Award, recognizing institutions that become more involved with their communities through innovative learning, discovery and engagement. In 2014, the Jazz in Schools program, a key piece of the festival, brought the transformative experience of jazz music to 37 area schools and 5,482 students.
