In 2009 he was awarded first prize in both the Arthur Poister National Competition in Organ Playing, and the AGO/Quimby Regional Competition for the Mid-Atlantic Region (Region III). 2009-2010 performances include appearances in New York City,T NY (St. Bartholomew's Church), Lancaster, PA, Chestertown, MD, Chambersburg, PA, and Little Rock, AR. In July, 2010 he will be a featured "Rising Star" performer at the National Convention of the American Guild of Organists in Washington, D.C. An experienced accompanist, he has performed frequently with the Westminster Chapel Choir and the Westminster Schola Cantorum. In 2007, Mr. Sheehan toured England with the Trinity Church Choir, including performances at St. Paul’s Cathedral, London; Blackburn Cathedral; St. John’s Chapel, Cambridge, under the direction of Tom Whittemore. Grace Epiphany is home to the three manual, 31 rank, E. M. Skinner Opus 320, installed in 1921. Grace Epiphany Church is located at the corner of Gowen Avenue and Ardleigh Street, in Mount Airy (Philadelphia). It is easily accessible by public transportation, on the #23 (Germantown Avenue) SEPTA bus route, as well as the L and H routes. It is one block from Mt. Airy station on the R7 (Chestnut Hill East) SEPTA rail line. The deadline for the next issue, March, 2010, is February 1, 2010. CRESCENDO, the official bul- letin of the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Guild of CRESCENDO Organists, is published monthly, September through June. Sundials, Solar Rays, and St Paul's Cathedral Since London is a Solar City – with St Paul's Cathedral representing the "sun" – we should expect to find evidence of solar rays , the symbolic use of Asherim to depict the radiant, life-sustaining power of the sun. Such a feature would seem to be required by the Babylonian worldview, where Asherim are conceived as conduits of hidden power, visible portals through which the gods radiate their "beneficent" energies into the universe. The spires and towers of 46 churches are aligned with the center of the dome of St Paul's Cathedral, creating 23 "solar rays". I was already familiar with this idea from my research into the monuments of Dublin, where church steeples and other Asherim are aligned in radial fashion around the "sun," the huge modern obelisk known as the Millennium Spire. As it happens, a total of 23 "solar rays" pass through the center of the dome of St Paul's Cathedral, based on the alignment of churches alone . Thus, in the diagram above, two churches sit on each line. If other types of Asherim are included – such as obelisks, monoliths, columns and cemetery chapels – the number is substantially greater. While attending the American Boychoir School in Princeton, New Jersey, Mr. Melendez performed in venues such as Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center in New York City with renowned musical figures such as Dr. James Litton, Dr. Joseph Flummerfelt, Yo-Yo Ma, Andre Previn, Wynton Marsalis, and Kurt Masur. As a conductor, educator, and sacred musician, Mr. Melendez has led choirs, taught seminars, and has been a guest artist for churches and music programs throughout the country. At only fifteen years of age, he was named the music director of the San Angelo Singing Boys of San Angelo, Texas. Two years later, he was named music director of St. Mark Presbyterian Church, San Angelo. He has founded several choral programs throughout the country as well as a Vocal Music Institute designed to provide young, dedicated singers an advanced level program in which they can progress in their efforts to becoming musical scholars. He has been music director of churches throughout Texas, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and California. As director of music ministries of First United Methodist Church in San Angelo, TX he led the Sanctuary Choir on a tour to New York City, performing in Carnegie Hall with world renowned composer/conductor John Rutter.
