The exhibition features the work of 11 artists who have established their trajectory in the field of art through their styles and traits. The artists are brought together under the theme of drawing, which forms a common language adopted by each one of them. The show intends to explore various drawing styles used by artists and the elusive thoughts brought to life through them. It also aims to establish how a variety of ideas can be expressed powerfully through the humble language of drawing. In this exhibition, we see artists working on themes like personal narratives, critique on societal norms or their drawings documenting the changing landscapes, and so on. Drawing is seen as a basic form of any art-making process. But, time and again, for artists, drawing has stood as an independent and parallel medium of expression to painting, sculpture, printmaking etc. It is characterized by the quality of the line that becomes a major factor in contributing to the overall feel of the work in the end. The simplicity of line, minimal colours, the graphical quality created by use of black and white, the play of opposites like the curvy organic line against the rigid, angular inorganic line, textures, etc are some of the categories of line and how they are responsible in evoking different moods.

Political activist, actor, playwright and poet, Safdar had been deeply committed, like so many young men and women of his generation, to the anti-imperialist, secular and egalitarian values that were woven into the rich fabric of the nation’s liberation struggle. Safdar moved closer to the Left, eventually joining the CPI(M), to pursue his goal of being part of a social order worthy of a free people. Tragically, it would be of the manner of his death at the hands of a politically patronised mafia that would single him out. The spontaneous, nationwide wave of revulsion, grief and resistance aroused by his brutal murder transformed him into a powerful symbol of the very values that had been sought to be crushed by his death. Such a death belongs to the revolutionary martyr. 6 PUBLICATIONS Safdar was thirty-four years old when he died.

  • All That Is Life
Curatorial Note All That Is Life Lockdown after lockdown, all of last year and most of this year, we have been stuck within the confines of our four walls. Being home can be a creative journey and sometimes not. Home can become a studio but sometimes not. Relationships and life have become transient. Everyone has had their own unique experience of loneliness, acceptance and hope. We will witness transformation and re-birth as we follow the artist’s internal journey through the pandemic. The new and the old. The known and the unknown. Claustrophobia and finally, freedom. This show features 20 upcoming artists who have responded to this crisis and forged their way forward. I have selected specifically these artists because of the resilience they have shown over the years. I have followed their practices intimately to know this. Their work is a meditation on the uncertainty of the times we live in, and our very human, but futile attempts to hold on to experiences and memories. • CATALOG ABHIJIT PATHAK Artist Statement
CATALOG ABHIJIT PATHAK Artist Statement Born 32 years ago in the north Indian state of Bihar, I was lucky to have spent my early years amidst the rice fields and gentle streams that were my playground, and it was there that my deep bond with nature was forged. My delight in drawing has early roots. From the age of seven my mother would have me adorn our home with religious symbols, which are usually applied with rice paste or a paste made of flour. I was gradually drawn to painting, eventually completing my Bachelor of Fine Arts from Varanasi. The city known for its temple architecture, art, music, poetry and Tehzeeb (grace). Varanasi played an important role in developing the impressions I carry today. Music and the sounds of my surroundings have been a major influence in my creative process, perceiving, balancing the chaotic and the serene. The meaning is not noticed immediately but discovered and revealed over time. Very akin to the Raga (a melodic framework in Indian classical music) with varying ascending and descending tones and patterns, yet always in harmony. I completed my Masters Degree in Fine Arts from New Delhi, where I was privileged to have as my teacher the well known painter and installation artist Vivan Sundaram. I was also greatly influenced by the interactions and conversations I had in my formative years with the gifted sculptor Himmat Shah. I am indebted to them for vastly broadening my horizons. The shift from Benaras to New Delhi was a turning point for me as an artist.

PRINSEPS MODERN ART AUCTION 24-25 APRIL 2019 www.prinseps.com 1 PRINSEPS MODERN ART AUCTION www.prinseps.com Prinseps Note We are excited to bring forth our seventh auction! Prinseps has been growing the past year and we are pleased to announce that we have launched our online gallery as well. We appreciate all the support we have received and hope to continue to provide you good quality works. Prinseps has an exceptional double sided Ram Kumar from the 1960s for auction. This is particularly rare because it is abstract in front and figurative at the back. Ram Kumar was an artist that never returned to his figurative style and so this work is incredibly important. This work is also extremely rare as double sided works are essentially possible only on boards and unlikely on canvases. It belongs to the formative years of the Progressive Modern Art Auction Artists’ Group movement, what some might describe as the beginning of modernism in India, and therefore of critical importance. 24 - 25 April 2019 This auction boasts of a F.N. Souza 1948 work which was done in Goa soon after he left the J. J. School of Art. This work is a part of the Souza in the 40s exhibition. By this time the Progressive Artists’ Group had just been formed and we can see a glimpse of what they The auction is open for proxy bidding wanted to paint in a new India. Souza was one of the original PAG members and he was responsible for inviting M.F. Husain to join the group.

Name : Mahesh Laxman Anjarlekar Education : G D Art from L S Raheja School of Art in year 1987 Profession : Sculptor Medium : Stoneware, Terracotta, Metal Born in a potter's family, graduated in Art, I have been professional Artist in communication art for over two decades in wide varieties of paintings including realistic, figurative Poetry on Canvas, for the last 4 years reconnected with my roots and focusing on clay, terracotta and ceramics, inspired by in Indian Sculptures of various ages and times, trying to create a space for myself as a re-creator of battered sculptural forms. Artist's Statement Intrigued by the thought how the flow of Time mows down both powerful and the weak of once flourishing but now dissolved empires, hamlets, I am set on the mission of recapturing those furrows carved by times on artworks, buried in ruins; allowing me to revisit those eras bygone, by a measure of the withered art, battered sculptures inviting all to relive the pain they endured. I wish time froze only to save these unsung pieces of expression, chose not to vandalize them by unleashing the brute forces of weather and dogmas. I chose ceramic as the medium for its ability to store those wounds inflicted on artworks of yore, chiselled forever. MYSTERIOUS LINES a solo by DHEERAJ YADAV Presents MYSTERIOUS LINES a solo by DHEERAJ YADAV Curated by VANDANA SEHGAL 16 NOVEMBER - 12 DECEMBER, 2019 Art Konsult 3-A, Ground Floor, Hauz Khas Village, New Delhi-110016 www.artkonsult.com Powered by picks up the pencil or a pen and a sheet of white paper, there is no inkling as to what will be the outcome and then the hand starts moving, etching lines on the paper that exude energy and can be termed as ‘inspired’… and the consecutive lines are drawn with a ‘logic’ to contrive an aesthetic balance. The forms that are mostly used by him are feminine and are a direct reference of ‘mother’, the fish form that is one of the most commonly used motif in his work, represents the softness and the nurturing nature of a ‘mother’. There is use of figures of animals and birds, which have Adivasi (tribal) roots. These are all interspersed with definitive arrows that indicate movement, give a direction to the eye very consciously and act as path finders for the onlooker. He says that although these supporting figures are small but they justify the blankness around them, which again points towards the basics of composition. There are areas in the work that have flat colour but don’t seem so because that space is also divided through lines, which according to Dheeraj divert the mind and eye into the STORYLINES… contours rather than the flatness of the paint. The technique of uneven colour is also used to take away the dominance of one colour, so that OF the lines reign supreme.
