‘Sales’ Seldom employment Save, Always Cost Money ‘Positive Message’

ANDY MEEK | The Memphis News Ray’s Take Stores love to run sales to entice you, and everyone loves a bargain. However, don’t confuse getting a discount with saving money. Anytime you buy something you are spending money, not saving it. You might be spending a little less – maybe even substantially less – but you are still spending. If you buy a $100 jacket at 25 percent off, you didn’t save $25. You spent $75. Unless you were looking for a jacket, with the money budgeted, you didn’t save money at all – you splurged, possibly on something you don’t really need. COVER STORy Irish Stories Immigrants from Ireland find success – and some similarities to their homeland – in Memphis

Story by AISLING MAKI : Photos by LANCE MURPHEY

hroughout the nation’s history, millions of Irish men and wom- en – in an effort to escape pov- erty, famine, joblessness and English oppression at home – made the journey across the Atlantic seeking fresh starts in the “land of opportunity.” Among earlier immigrants, men worked as laborers, building America’s canals andT railroads, as well as taking jobs in mills, factories and construction, while Irish women worked largely as domestic servants. They later became law enforce- ment officers, politicians, teachers and nurses, but despite their transition into the middle class, perva- sive negative stereotypes – often perpetuated through newspaper illustrations by cartoonists such as Thomas Nash in the 1870s – meant Irish immigrants did not escape bigotry in their adopted homeland. Although they had some visibility in Southern cities such as Savannah, Ga., and New Orleans, Irish immigrants largely settled in northern metropolises such as Boston, New York, Chicago and Philadelphia. Irish immigration to the U.S. slowed in the mid-1990s, when the Celtic Tiger – a period of rapid, robust economic growth – swept Ireland. Those who did come to the U.S. were a far cry from the poverty- stricken immigrants of previous generations. THE PRESS BOX DON WADE Believe Memphis? Heart Same As Head In Not if Lakers in Town Picking Games ne of the beauties of the NCAA Tournament is the more you know, Othe less you know. Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins knows more about the game than most of us could forget and he believes Kentucky will win this time. “None of Cal’s other teams had the full package,” he said, referring to Kentucky and former Memphis coach John Calipari. Hollins believes the other No. 1 seeds – Syracuse, Michigan State and North Carolina – also will make the Final Four. But what mattered most was what he said next: that his opinion probably carried as much weight as the nearly empty plastic water bottle he was holding. President Obama correctly picked North Carolina three years ago but the last two went with Kansas and the Jayhawks lasted about as long as Herman Cain’s presidential run. So the president is back on the Tar Heel bandwagon, the closest thing he has in this field to an incumbent. But upsets are more than an occasion- al happening in the NCAA Tournament. To put it in political terms: don’t trust the polls.
