As an urban metropolitan research university, we celebrate undergraduate research as an integral part of our educational mission. For this reason, we are excited to collaborate with the Council of Undergraduate Research in presenting the largest national showcase for research and creative activities performed by undergraduate students across all fields of study. It’s a pleasure to welcome more than 4,000 students, faculty mentors and administrators to our campus and community to recognize and promote undergraduate student achievement. Providing undergraduates with the opportunity to engage in scholarly research is important to students’ professional development, so I applaud all the faculty mentors for providing an exceptional learning experience for their students. You do, indeed, make a difference in the lives of these students as they prepare to take the next step on the pathway to a career and a commitment to lifelong learning. To the student presenters, I offer my congratulations for the impressive research and your selection to participate in NCUR 2017. While you are here, I invite you to experience all that our University and community offers. I hope you have the opportunity to explore and enjoy our city. Memphis has a rich history and exciting cultural tapestry. David Rudd President, University of Memphis THE UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS 5 2017-0309 NCUR-FINAL.indd 5 3/9/17 12:41 PM Welcome from the Council on Undergraduate Research Greetings, The Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) is pleased and honored to congratulate the more than 4,000 undergraduate researchers, faculty mentors and other supporters of undergraduate research achievement who are participating in the 31st National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR). Hosted by the vibrant and diverse University of Memphis (UofM), and located in a region of the United States renowned for its arts, culture, and hospitality traditions, the 31st NCUR promises to be an exuberant celebration of scholarship in its varied expressions. As an NCUR 2017 participant, you are part of a long cherished tradition, one that annually celebrates and commemorates outstanding research, scholarship, and creative inquiry undertaken by undergraduate students and their faculty mentors. “Driven by Doing” is the resonant title for this year’s NCUR, and it also speaks to CUR’s energetic growth and commitment to providing valued services and programs to its more than 11,000 members at 900 affiliated colleges, universities, and associations. If you are not yet familiar with all that CUR has to offer, we invite you to learn more about our organization (http://www.cur.org). We particularly encourage all undergraduate students interested in progressing to graduate study to sign up for CUR’s registry. As attendees have found with past NCURs, I predict that NCUR 2017 will be an incredibly powerful, moving and highly memorable experience for all participants. It is with sincere gratitude that CUR thanks UofM and the greater Memphis business community for hosting this year’s conference, and for rolling out a warm and inclusive welcome to all involved. Elizabeth Ambos, CUR Executive Officer Washington, D.C. Dear NCUR 2017 Participants, With NCUR, the Council on Undergraduate Research invites you into a community of scholars and we are thrilled you have chosen to participate. CUR is pleased to have worked with University of Memphis to put on what will surely be an amazing conference. We hope that you find the atmosphere to be one of support and collaboration, but also one that will challenge you intellectually and make you a better scholar. For many of us, NCUR is one of the few conferences where we get beyond our own discipline and truly learn how other areas of study generate knowledge, investigate problems, and create.
