Gatzea I: Dissemination strategies for Heritage Elisa DAMIANIDOU Pelion Geography Pelion is a mountain at the southeastern part of Thessaly in central Greece, forming a peninsula in hook-shape between the Pagasetic Gulf and the Aegean Sea. 1 Thessaly, Magnesia, Mountain Pelion Mythology Regarding the Greek mythology, Mount Pelion took its name from the mythical king Peleus, father of Achilles, and was the homeland of the centaurs; the mythical creatures presented as part human and part horse. Most famous is the Chiron the Centaur, the wise tutor of many ancient demigods and heroes, such as Jason, Achilles, Theseus, Heracles and also Aesculapius, who then became the God of Medicine and gave life to the dead (Development Company of Pelion SA 2012:27). 2 Chiron the Centaur teaches Achilles Pelion was the place of residence of Gods in the summer and the place where the marriage of Thetis and Peleus took place. All the Olympian Gods were invited except for the goddess Eris because of her provocative inclinations. To take revenge, she brought a golden apple with the inscription "To the Fairest" and then the dispute arose between the goddesses Hera, Aphrodite and Athena. Paris, the Prince of Troy, was appointed to select the fairest by Zeus and he chose Aphrodite’s temptation that was Helen, the most beautiful woman in the world and wife of Menelaus of Sparta. Thus, the Trojan War began (Development Company of Pelion SA 2012:27). Jason and the Argonauts The voyage of Jason and the Argonauts to retrieve the Golden Fleece from the mythical land of Colchis was organized in Pelion too. -

Hardiman 2005 ABSTRACT This dissertation marks the first synthetic and contextual analysis of domestic sculpture for the whole of the Hellenistic period (323 BCE – 31 BCE). Prior to this study, Hellenistic domestic sculpture had been examined from a broadly literary perspective or had been the focus of smaller regional or site-specific studies. Rather than taking any one approach, this dissertation examines both the literary testimonia and the material record in order to develop as full a picture as possible for the location, function and meaning(s) of these pieces. The study begins with a reconsideration of the literary evidence. The testimonia deal chiefly with the residences of the Hellenistic kings and their conspicuous displays of wealth in the most public rooms in the home, namely courtyards and dining rooms. Following this, the material evidence from the Greek mainland and Asia Minor is considered. The general evidence supports the literary testimonia’s location for these sculptures. In addition, several individual examples offer insights into the sophistication of domestic decorative programs among the Greeks, something usually associated with the Romans. -

Venizelou 70 (part-time) / Freelance Geologist, Navarinou 21, 152 32 Halandri, Athens, Greece, [email protected] Abstract At a newly discovered archaeological site at Aghios Taxiarches in Northern Euboea, two vo- tive inscribed stelae were found in 2001 together with hellenistic pottery next to ancient wall ruins on a steep and high rocky slope. Based on the inscriptions and the geographical location of the site we propose the hypothesis that this is quite probably the spot where the oracle of “Apollo Seli- nountios” (mentioned by Strabo) would stand in antiquity. The wall ruins of the site are found on a very steep bedrock escarpment of an active fault zone, next to a hanging valley, a high waterfall and a cave. -
Archaic Eretria
ARCHAIC ERETRIA This book presents for the first time a history of Eretria during the Archaic Era, the city’s most notable period of political importance. Keith Walker examines all the major elements of the city’s success. One of the key factors explored is Eretria’s role as a pioneer coloniser in both the Levant and the West— its early Aegean ‘island empire’ anticipates that of Athens by more than a century, and Eretrian shipping and trade was similarly widespread. We are shown how the strength of the navy conferred thalassocratic status on the city between 506 and 490 BC, and that the importance of its rowers (Eretria means ‘the rowing city’) probably explains the appearance of its democratic constitution. Walker dates this to the last decade of the sixth century; given the presence of Athenian political exiles there, this may well have provided a model for the later reforms of Kleisthenes in Athens. Eretria’s major, indeed dominant, role in the events of central Greece in the last half of the sixth century, and in the events of the Ionian Revolt to 490, is clearly demonstrated, and the tyranny of Diagoras (c. 538–509), perhaps the golden age of the city, is fully examined. Full documentation of literary, epigraphic and archaeological sources (most of which have previously been inaccessible to an English-speaking audience) is provided, creating a fascinating history and a valuable resource for the Greek historian. Evidence for Tidal Triggering on the Shallow Earthquakes of the Seismic Area of Mygdonia Basin, North Greece, in Terrestrial and Stellar Environment, Eds

Spatalas Department of Geodesy and Surveying, University of Thessaloniki, Greece Abstract: Based on the results of our studies for the tidal triggering effect on the seismicity of the Hellenic area, we consider the confidence level of earthquake occurrence - tidal period accordance as an index of tectonic stress criticality for earthquake occurrence and we check if the recent increase in the seismic activity at Fthiotida in Greek Mainland indicate faulting maturity for a stronger earthquake. In this paper we present the results of this test. Key words: Earthtides, Seismicity, Hi(stogram)Cum(ulation) method 1. Introduction Applying the Hi(stogram)Cum(ulation) method, which was introduced recently by Cadicheanu, van Ruymbecke and Zhu (2007), we analyze the series of the earthquakes occurred in the last 50 years in seismic active areas of Greece, i.e. the areas (a) of the Mygdonian Basin(Contadakis et al. 2007), (b) of the Ionian Islands (Contadakis et al. 2012), (c) of the Hellenic Arc (Vergos et al. 2012) and (d) Santorini (Contadakis et al. 2013). The result of the analysis for all the areas indicate that the monthly variation of the frequencies of earthquake occurrence is in accordance with the period of the tidal lunar monthly and semi-monthly (Mm and Mf) variations and the same happens with the corresponding daily variations of the frequencies of earthquake occurrence with the diurnal luni-solar (K1) and semidiurnal lunar (M2) tidal variations. -

historia 68, 2019/4, 413–435 DOI 10.25162/historia-2019-0022 Jeffrey Rop The Phocian Betrayal at Thermopylae Abstract: This article makes three arguments regarding the Battle of Thermopylae. First, that the discovery of the Anopaea path was not dependent upon Ephialtes, but that the Persians were aware of it at their arrival and planned their attacks at Thermopylae, Artemisium, and against the Phocians accordingly. Second, that Herodotus’ claims that the failure of the Pho- cians was due to surprise, confusion, and incompetence are not convincing. And third, that the best explanation for the Phocian behavior is that they were from Delphi and betrayed their allies as part of a bid to restore local control over the sanctuary. Keywords: Thermopylae – Artemisium – Delphi – Phocis – Medism – Anopaea The courageous sacrifice of Leonidas and the Spartans is perhaps the central theme of Herodotus’ narrative and of many popular retellings of the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BCE. Even as modern historians are appropriately more critical of this heroizing impulse, they have tended to focus their attention on issues that might explain why Leo- nidas and his men fought to the death. These include discussion of the broader strategic and tactical importance of Thermopylae, the inter-relationship and chronology of the Greek defense of the pass and the naval campaign at Artemisium, the actual number of Greeks who served under Leonidas and whether it was sufficient to hold the position, and so on. While this article inevitably touches upon some of these same topics, its main purpose is to reconsider the decisive yet often overlooked moment of the battle: the failure of the 1,000 Phocians on the Anopaea path. -

Our observations have led us to adopt a simplified view of the paleogeography of the Greek mainland before the Alpine orogenesis. The subsequent varied tectonic units originate mainly from the following paleogeo- graphic areas: • A carbonate Arabo-African shelf margin which displays several lateral transitions, ridges and basins. On the Greek mainland this margin is represented by the Preapulian, Ionian, Gavrovo-Tripolis, Parnassos zones, the Olympus platform and probably the Kavala and Thassos marble. • A transition zone from the shelf units to the Tethys ophiolites (Pindos Zone, Styra, Argolis and Hydra, Eretrias new unit). • Tethys ophiolites, which might represent either an “ocean” fault zone or subduction of the lithosphere along a weak area. • A Hercynian continental mass (Serbomacedonian). This group is currently completed by the presence of a large tectonic mélange connected to the ophiolite overthrust. Trimmis Kytherian Valerios Stais is widely recognised for his efforts as a curator of the National Archaeological Museum in Athens and as the first excavator of the temple of Poseidon at Sounio, Attica, Greece. Even though there are two published biographies of Stais, one appearing after his death 1923 and the other in 1992, the rest of his work on the Antikythera mechanism and the prehistory of Thessaly is largely forgotten today. In this paper, the lifelong achievements of Valerios Stais are presented and a special focus has been given on the importance of his pioneering work on the acropoleis of Sesklo and Dimini and the recognition of the unique technological achievement represented by the Antikythera mechanism. In evaluating Stais’s achievements, we meet a persona with a unique influence on the formation of modern Greek archaeology. Destaca en primer lugar el sistema de poljes, relacionados con la estructura geológica y la evolución cli- mática de la isla durante el Cuaternario. De los 12 poljes diferenciados, tres de ellos se mantienen todavía en situación cerrada. Estas depresiones presentan extensos desarrollos de superficies de aplanamiento y conos rocosos generados por procesos de criptocorrosión kárstica en diferentes momentos de su evolu- ción cuaternaria. Por otra parte, las áreas de cumbre aparecen con restos de superficies aplanadas heredadas, afectadas por campos de lapiaz y dolinas. Se propone un modelo evolutivo y se relaciona con otras áreas kársticas del ámbito mediterráneo. Palabras clave: Grecia, Karst, poljes, Cuaternario. Abstract: A geomorphological mapping of a karstic area developed on marbles and schists in the central sector of the island of Eubea is presented.
