Reading Julia De Burgos with the FBI HARRIS FEINSOD
98 CENTRO JOURNAL VOLUME XXVI • NUMBER II • FALL 2014 Between Dissidence and Good NeighBor Diplomacy: Reading Julia de Burgos with the FBI HARRIS FEINSOD ABSTRACT Little is known about Julia de Burgos’s six months as an audit clerk at the Offi ce of the Co- ordinator of Inter-American Affairs in Washington, D.C. (1944-1945). This article recounts this interlude in Burgos’s career by focusing on her FBI fi le and the Hatch Act investigation that led to her termination as a federal employee. Reading the FBI fi le in the vein of literary criticism, the article shows how bureau ghosttranslators characterized Burgos’s political poems as works of dissident Nationalism. In so far as Burgos’s poems navigate the compet- ing ideologies of Puerto Rican Nationalism and Good Neighbor diplomacy, the article links them to a hemispheric matrix of writing—by Elizabeth Bishop, Pablo Neruda, Luis Palés Matos, Samuel Putnam and William Carlos Williams, among others—in which Puerto Rican decolonial politics intersect international communism and anticommunism. Rafael Cancel-Miranda Praised on His 90Th Birthday
Rafael Cancel-Miranda praised on his 90th birthday Mayagüez, July 19 (RHC)-- A group of independence fighters on Saturday exalted the figure of nationalist fighter Rafael Cancel-Miranda, on his 90th birthday, at the Vivaldi Cemetery in Mayagüez, where his remains have been laid to rest since March 8th. Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP) leader Julio Muriente Perez lamented that due to his irredeemable death, on July 18th he could not be shared with thousands of his fellow countrymen in his native Mayaguez, in western Puerto Rico, "where his immortal remains now rest." The former president of the Movimiento Independentista Nacional Hostosiano (MINH) said that perhaps the meeting would have been at the grave of the combative nationalist leader Pedro Albizu Campos, in the cemetery of Old San Juan, where Cancel-Miranda first went after stepping on Puerto Rican soil after his release from prison in September 1979, after spending 25 years in U.S. prisons. Muriente Pérez said that on this occasion "we would have liked to sing to him, recite his poems, remember his anecdotes, laugh at his great sense of humor, re-charge his batteries with his immeasurable desire to live and serve his people and humanity, evoke his admirable perseverance and firmness of principle." Likewise, he said, we would have remembered, with similar respect to his colleagues Oscar Collazo, Lolita Lebron, Irving Flores and Andres Figueroa Cordero, that "like Rafaelito they are our National Heroes." Born on July 18, 1930 in Mayagüez, he dedicated his life to the independence of Puerto Rico under the inspiration of Pedro Albizu Campos, whom as a Cadet of the Republic, a youth organization of the Nationalist Party, he welcomed in December 1947 upon his return from serving a 10-year sentence in Atlanta and New York charged with conspiracy to overthrow the United States government. -

El partido sitúa la nación tanto en la entidad geográfica de la isla, como en el área política-cultural transnacional de América Latina. Para establecer que Puerto Rico era una nación, el partido se basó en la cultura, la historia, el idioma y la religión que la isla comparte con América Latina. Los Nacionalistas también vincularon la isla a América Latina para convencer a los puertorriqueños de que su historia y su futuro estaban con América Latina, no con los de los Estado Unidos. Este artículo también establece que el Partido Nacionalista consideraba que tanto los hombres como las mujeres constituyen la nación y tienen un papel fundamental que desempeñar en el logro de su liberación. -

01:595:266 Puerto Rican Literature / 01:195:267:01 Latino Literature Fulfills Culture and Creative Expressions Distribution for LCS Major/Minor Course Description This course will offer a panoramic view of Puerto Rican literature beginning with the Grito de Lares in 1868 and ending with 21st-century contemporary literature from the island. Among the periods or subjects discussed will be the different anti-colonial and nationalist movements (Ramón Emeterio Betances, Pedro Albizu Campos), Afroantillean poetry (Luis Palés Matos), the Generation of the 1930s and the dissenting voices within it (Pedreira, Marqués, Julia de Burgos), the Nuyorican diaspora (Pietri, Piri Thomas), the critique of the paternalistic nationalist canon by the Generation of the 70s (García Ramis, Ramos Otero, Rosario Ferré), and recent contemporary writers (Pedro Cabiya). Blanca Vega Castro, Pedro González Cerrud Francisco Matos Paoli y Pedro Albizu Campos Ada Hilda Martínez de Alicea Catedrática Auxiliar - Departamento de Química y Física UPR-Ponce Resumen La autora destaca la completa coincidencia en pensamiento, intenciones y acción de los dos próceres, Pedro Albizu Campos y Francisco Matos Paoli, desde que se conocieron en 1930 hasta que muere Albizu en 1965. En alguna ocasión incluso compartieron una celda en la cárcel. Los problemas con la Justicia, las acusaciones y condenas se agravan a partir de 1950 para Matos Paoli. Este, que ocupó largo tiempo la secretaría general del Partido Nacionalista, aunque fue acusado y convicto de subversión, en realidad concentró su participación en la prédica y la escritura a favor del nacionalismo, especialmente con el arma de la poesía. Fue alrededor de 1951 que, estando preso con Albizu, este advirtió los signos de la afección mental que le sobrevino a su correligionario. Matos Paoli compartió con Albizu la totalidad de las bases y proyectos del nacionalismo. La autora señala otras numerosas e importantes circunstancias de la vida, convicciones y acciones de ambos próceres. NELSON RIVERA By The Editors and nibia pastrana santiago or Commonwealth, Nelson Rivera wrote a score for a performance that occurred periodically F throughout the run of the exhibition at the ICA. The script is based on speeches by Pedro Albizu Campos (1891–1965), a Puerto Rican attorney and political leader who was the main figure in the movement for Puerto Rican independence from the United States. These speeches, delivered from 1948 to 1950, were made during the US military occupation of Puerto Rico, when it had partial sovereignty and before it was designated as a commonwealth, an unincorporated territory of the United States. In 1948, the Puerto Rican Senate passed Law 53, which made it illegal to display the Puerto Rican flag and limited speech against the United States government. The speeches in Rivera’s scripts violated this law by criticizing the US government and advocating for independence. Rivera has required that only nonSpanish speakers perform the score. Juan Antonio Don Juan Antonio Corretjer, Secretary-General of the Liga Socialista Puertorriquena, is a per- son of great stature in the political and cul- tural life of the Puerto Rican nation, as woJ 1 as a representative of the unity of all Latin America in its struggle for liberation. Juan Antonio Corretjer has been involved in the Puerto Rican independence struggle for over half-a-century; he was formerly the Secretary General of the Nationalist Party and was impris- oned along with Don Pedro Albizu Campos in the U.S. Penitentiary in Atlanta from 1936-1940. He is also an internationally recognized poet, and was awarded the distinction of National Poet of Puerto Rico by the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture for his book "Yerba Bruja." The growing strength and popularity of the Nation- alist Party represented a threat to continued U.S. colonial control. The U.S. government responded with a campaign of repression against the Party and the people. Throughout this period, Corretjer played an active role in the revolutionary process, not only of Puerto Rico, but also of other Latin American countries. -
