    “where a good crime C r i m e can be had by all” c h r o n i c l e Issue #228 January 2005 2004 THE YEAR IN REVIEW It has been a wonderful year for crime fiction, dominated undoubtedly by the Dan Brown phenomenon. I can’t think of another author whose extraordinary success with one novel has led to all his earlier titles moving on to the bestseller lists and remaining there for most of the year. Only Angels and Demons was at all similar to The Da Vinci Code in that it had the same main character and involved conspiracy and the Vatican. Of course, not only has he had success with his own books, but he has started a whole industry of books explaining, debunking, decoding, etc the Da Vinci Code and no doubt tours to the various sites mentioned in the book. It will be interesting to see what he comes up with next. Historical crime is again dominated by Elizabeth Peters with her Amelia Peabody mysteries (there are 16 in the series), now with Lindsey Davis not far behind. Australian crime saw (in our shop, at least) the bestselling list dominated by Kerry Greenwood with six of her titles in our Top 10. Non-fiction saw Helen Garner’s Joe Cinque’s Consolation way out in front, followed by Peter Rees’ Ned Kelly Award-winning Killing Juanita. By the time of ‘The Prisoner of Brenda’, Colin Bateman’s Mystery Man creation has been around for a few books. The enigmatic book store owner is a great creation; sarcastic, neurotic and quite likely psychotic. In his previous adventures he has been threatened plenty of times, but has always managed a jammy escape; usually with the aid of his girlfriend or lacklustre helper. However, ‘Brenda’ puts him up against his most dangerous foe yet, himself. We learn more in the pages of this book about Mystery Man than in all the previous novels combines. ‘Brenda’ in parts takes place in a psychiatric hospital, a place that MM spend some of his formative years in. To start with ‘Brenda’ appears to be the normal breezy Mystery Man book as a client enters the bookstore asking to hire him to investigate the murder of his brother. A prologue does hint that this is a darker tale than normal, but it is not until the mental institution that the book really takes a turn for the macabre. Although MM never comes across as a confident character, he is actually very smug and assured. When he places himself in the hands of the authorities he is forced to examine what he has become and deal without the pharmacy of drugs that he has come to depend on. For the middle section of the book, the crime story takes a back seat and instead the character of MM comes to the fore.

    McGuire Narratives of apprehension Western Sydney University, Australia Matthew McGuire Narratives of apprehension: crime fiction and the aftermath of the Northern Irish Troubles Abstract: With over four hundred produced between 1969 and 1998, the thriller was the most popular fictional form of representing the Northern Ireland Troubles. Critics, however, were highly dismissive of the genre, claiming it offered little more than clichés and stereotypes, and that it marked the enthronement and reiteration of a problematically reductive take on the conflict. The Belfast Agreement (1998) signalled the official end of the Troubles and the beginning of what many hoped would be a new era in Northern Irish history. The decades since the Agreement era have witnessed a remarkable resurgence of interest, both critically and creatively, in crime fiction, and in the ways in which the hermeneutic codes of the genre might be brought to bear on the various legacies of the Troubles. For a new generation of Northern Irish crime writers, academic critics and literary novelists the possibilities and limitations of genre fiction have provided an arena in which key issues might be theorised and thought through; these include the challenge of dealing with the past, questions about truth recovery and transitional justice, and the need within the region to achieve some form of closure on the traumatic events of recent years. Far from continuing a process of ideological reductionism, post-Agreement crime fiction has exemplary value. Drawing inspiration from the police procedural, the comic thriller and the noir-ish Weltanschauung of hard- boiled detective fiction, it contains a series of idiosyncratic and sophisticated responses to the aftermath of political conflict.
