reading an article written by a Headmaster a number of years ago which struck a chord with me at the time, where he highlighted his observations of two schools in the suburb he resided in. When he drove past the first school on his daily commute to work to and from work during the school week, or alternatively on weekends, the school fields, courts, swimming pool, as well as, the buildings were a constant hive of activity, with students, teachers and coaches engaged in a myriad of sporting, cultural and academic programmes. When he drove past the second school, the grounds were always empty, there were no cars in the parking and the school gates were closed. He proceeded to compare the results of both schools, whether in the academic, sport or cultural spheres, and naturally the first school outperformed the second in all areas. The conclusion that he came to was that a good measure of a high functioning educational institution is whether there is a high level of activity, which indicates that teaching and learning is taking place. I am often astounded at the high level of engagement of our students and staff at St Peter's College. This past week we hosted the following events: Wednesday, 14 June: • We played St Dunstan's College in a rugby fixture on de Klerk Field • Played our final netball league fixture against St Stithians Girls where all our netball teams acquitted themselves extremely well against very strong opposition. • Squash 2nd team played against Beaulieu College • Attended the end of season hockey dinner which was a wonderful celebration and acknowledgement of the wonderful achievements of our hockey players in the 2017 season. Thursday, 15 June: • We celebrated Youth Day with a moving Eucharist Service led by Father Trevor Prince. • I was privileged to attend the Arts and Culture Grade 8 Dance class production of "Earth, Wind & Fire". Congratulations must go to Mr Botha and the Grade 8 Dance Students on an outstanding performance. Saturday, 17 - Sunday, 18 June: • Our 1st Team squash won a 3 way play off between Parktown Boys and Bryanston High to the win the Gauteng B League. • Our Equestrian team participated in the Equestrian qualifiers on both Saturday and Sunday. Monday, 19 June: • Drama Production of ‘500 Days of Summer’ will be running this week - I want to congratulate Mr Doneda, Mrs Miles and the Drama Students on the high quality of this production. I am often astounded by the professionalism displayed by our Drama Department. Tuesday, 20 June: • Drama Production of ‘500 Days of Summer’ • Grade 10 and Grade 11 Parent's Consultation. Thursday, 15 June - Tuesday, 20 June: • We hosted a USA based soccer scholarship programme called Black Rock FC in which a number of our students participated, with a focus on soccer skills, and most importantly on academic standards. I am most grateful that we have a highly committed staff, parent and student body who grasp the numerous opportunities provided at St Peter's College. I want to inform you that our HOD of Afrikaans Mrs Joan Delport has resigned and will be leaving at the end of December 2017. Joan will be taking up the post of HOD of Afrikaans at St Peter's Boy's Prep with effect from January 2018. We wish Joan all of the best in her new position. We are in the process of interviewing for Joan's replacement and are hoping to make an announcement on her replacement fairly soon. The half-term break is a wonderful opportunity for our students to prepare for the examinations, especially the Matrics who will be writing prelims in July. I urge our Matriculants to make use of the Winter School Programme over this period which is designed to assist with exam preparation. The programme is designed for Heads of school to identify areas of improvement, establish priorities, develop strategies, and build a base of support around a change initiative. I will have the opportunity to explore successful models for school improvement and understand how to implement curriculum innovation. This is a wonderful opportunity and I will be reporting back on my experiences on my return from the USA. Have a wonderful half-term break. In Futurum Fortiter Kind regards Mr Rui Morais Headmaster School Shop News Supporter’s Clothing This term we introduced a new supporter’s top and jacket as advertised on the St Peter’s College Facebook page.
