Both competitions drew entries from all around South Africa, including IEB and state schools. Emma's artwork submission is entitled 'Preservation'. Norman has been employed by Fidelity ADT since 2005 and he has worked as a security guard at Durban Girls’ College since 2013. Norman comes from the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal and he is engaged to Sbongile Bam. He has a daughter, Anele, and a son, Kwanele. He is passionate about rugby and soccer. During exam times, the girls are always greeted by Norman with a very cheerful ‘good luck’. Norman says that he loves working at DGC and especially enjoys the interaction with the girls, parents and staff. Thank you, Norman, for all you do to keep us safe. We appreciate you! From our Chaplain Michelle Edgcumbe Let them turn to the Lord that he may have mercy on them. Yes, turn to our God, for he will forgive generously. Isaiah 55:5 In line with the theme of grace, which we spoke about in the first assembly of Term 3, this passage from Isaiah struck me. This rendering made me stop for a time to consider the nature of God's forgiveness. We know that at times our own forgiveness can be grudging. We often give it conditionally or we take it back. We ask for it, or we expect it, but find it so challenging when others ask for it from us. God is not like us. We presume his forgiveness is like ours - that he doesn't really want to give it, that good deeds sort of persuade him to give more of it, and that he's just waiting to remove it. But what is true of God in Isaiah's time, is true of him in ours - he calls people to come to him to find generous forgiveness. Not the grudging, temporary or selfishly motivated kind. Generous forgiveness. What a relief, and what a challenge to our own hearts. Germs are doing the rounds. Life is very busy as academic matters and sport, cultural and spiritual matters continue unabated, as they do every year at this time. A few more weeks of “hectic” and things change pace dramatically. We are very good at feeling sorry for ourselves, forgetting the hordes that have gone before us. The national psyche remains fragile. If the school were in the same place as the country I would have been red long ago! Yet no one it seems will accept responsibility! Responsibility is not a popular word. The world of lawnmower parents is catching up with us, as teenagers, and even voting age teenagers have built up little resilience to dealing with the ebb and ow of life. Youngsters (and adults) now seek continual armation, even when wrong. A reprimand is now interpreted as “shouting” for example, and self-worth becomes questioned when facing any negative experience which demands personal accountability. People want to be continually stroked and made to feel good. Self-indulgent behaviour and petulance in the absence of pleasure abounds. Ben Zander, the conductor of the Boston Philharmonic, tells the story of a visiting world famous violinist who was visiting. He gave tickets to his entire class at the Youth Music Centre.

6 June 2008 St Mary’s Matters St Mary’s Diocesan School for Girls From the Head’s Desk Dear Parents, The term continues to provide a busy life for the girls and teachers alike. The sports girls have been particularly active play- ing matches up to three times a week. The successes have been impressive in both the Senior and Junior Schools and it is a real pleasure to see the improvement in the standard of play. The league matches are mostly over and I must thank every- one involved in coaching and sport administration for all their hard work. The results have been impressive, particularly as we are now playing in stronger leagues in most of the sports. Where teams have lost they have done so by very narrow margins. In the Senior School, the U14A hockey team won their league section and will participate in the playoffs. We have yet to hear if other teams will be invited to their playoffs. The U14A and U15A netball teams were placed 2nd in the playoffs, and the U16A team were the overall winners of their league- a wonderful achievement. In basketball, the Open, U16 A and B, and U15A and B teams are all involved in playoffs this weekend. Three hockey girls have been chosen for Northern Gauteng B teams. One of our girls has also been chosen for each of the U14A, U16A and U18A teams. Three of our U16 girls have been chosen to play netball for Northern Gauteng, one of whom went on to be selected for the Gauteng team.
