The Concept of Pneuma After Aristotle Volume Proposal: Edition Topoi 1 The Concept of Pneuma after Aristotle Volume Proposal: edition Topoi Editors: Sean Coughlin (Berlin), David Leith (Exeter), Orly Lewis (Berlin) Aim and Scope The proposed volume is a study of the concept of pneuma in medical and philosophical thought after Aristotle. The volume brings together leading and new scholars in the fields of ancient philosophy, medicine and classics in order to examine the history of the concept of pneuma in physics, psychology, physiology, embryology and pathology. The studies in this volume address two fundamental questions concerning the concept of pneuma: (i) how was pneuma conceptualized and (ii) how was it used in explanations of the natural world. The volume, therefore, discusses (i) the various definitions of pneuma proposed by different schools – e.g. Peripatetic, Stoic, Medical (Dogmatic, Methodist, “Pneumatist”), Neoplatonist – and where and why these views intersect; and (ii) it also explores the role of pneuma in explanations of the existence, generation and maintenance of animal life, the physiological and psychological functions of the body, and the workings of the cosmos as a whole. The concept of pneuma occupies a unique place in the histories of ancient philosophy, science and medicine, both in the range of the phenomena it was used to explain and in its longevity as a useful scientific concept. Often translated as ‘breath’ or ‘spirit’, pneuma is found in explanations of just about everything in the universe: from animal generation and growth, to bodily movement, sensation and cognition; from the cohesion of inanimate objects to the order and unity of the entire cosmos. And while its details were disputed, its existence and importance were unquestioned from the time of Aristotle until it was gradually displaced by the mechanical philosophy almost two-thousand years later. In the history of the concept of pneuma, scholars consider the writings of Aristotle a turning point: he develops a complex conception of pneuma and assigns it a central role in the generation, development and workings of the body and soul. After Aristotle, the importance of pneuma in medical and philosophical thought is undisputed —during the post-Aristotelian history of pneuma, the concept is articulated and elaborated by nearly every ancient philosophical school. Yet, while it constitutes an important stage in this history, the period after Aristotle has attracted little attention. Only a handful of studies have been dedicated to particular aspects of the history of the concept in this period, e.g.: A. Debru’s Le Corps Respirant (Brill, 1996) addresses some of Galen’s conception of pneuma; D. Hahm’s The Origins of Stoic Cosmology (Ohio State University Press, 1977) addresses the Stoic use of pneuma in cosmology; and M. Osler’s Atoms, Pneuma, and Tranquillity (Cambridge, 1991) contains a selection of papers looking at the early modern reception of Stoic views. W. Jaeger’s study “Das Pneuma im Lykeion” (Hermes, 1913), which is dedicated to the Aristotelian and early-Peripatetic conceptions of pneuma, includes a discussion of the ideas found in the Ps.- Aristotelian De spiritu as well as their relation to the theories of Aristotle, Praxagoras of Cos, Erasistratus of Ceos and the Stoics. The monumental study of G. Verbeke (L’evolution de la doctrine du pneuma: du stoicisme à s. Augustin, 1945) examines the history of the concept in a broader perspective and is still invaluable. Nevertheless, new sources, editions and studies in recent years give rise to the need for an additional study examining the history of the concept across different periods and traditions. The proposed volume will begin to fill this lacuna by offering a collection of studies addressing the definition and role of pneuma in the theories and epistemology of different medical and philosophical traditions. 2 The main questions the volume will address are: How is pneuma defined and conceptualized at different times and in different traditions? Which functions or capacities are assigned to pneuma in the cosmos and in living bodies? What role does the concept of “innate” pneuma play in our sources? What causal or explanatory role is assigned to it? How is it distinguished from other types of pneuma and related concepts such as innate heat and cosmic fire? What is the relation of pneuma to soul? How did changes in anatomical knowledge (e.g. the discoveries of the nerves and the arteries) influence and transform the conception of pneuma? And finally, what role did Aristotle’s doctrine of pneuma play in the shaping of later ideas? The volume will be divided into four sections: The Peripatetic Tradition; Hellenistic and Early Roman Periods; Galen; and Later Traditions. Section 1 addresses the immediate reception of Aristotle’s concept and the changes it underwent in the hands of Aristotle’s followers, picking up directly from the volume Aristotle and his Predecessors on Heat, Pneuma and Soul (forthcoming in Cambridge University Press). Section 2 explores how pneuma became a key feature in medical and philosophical theories outside the Peripatetic school, and how conceptions of pneuma began to change in light of new anatomical observations and theories of the soul. The papers examine this period by looking at the ideas of Cleanthes, the second head of the influential philosophical school of Stoicism, and prominent physicians of the Hellenistic and Early Roman periods: Praxagoras, Herophilus and Erasistratus, Asclepiades of Bithynia, and two prominent Pneumatist physicians, Athenaeus of Attalia and Archigenes of Apamea. The place of pneuma in the writings of physicians from the Hellenistic and Early Roman period prior to Galen is particularly important: their views are little studied, yet they are an important part of the history and necessary for understanding later characterizations of pneuma. For this reason, and due to the fragmentary nature of our sources, we believe these physicians merit sustained and independent treatment. Section 3 is dedicated to the second-century physician Galen of Pergamon: the extent of Galen’s discussion of pneuma, the role it plays in his physiology and the richness of our sources justifies a close study of his conception of pneuma. The inclusion of several papers on Galen’s ideas on pneuma will allow for in-depth studies on particular questions and topics, which are relevant to the later history of pneuma as well. Section 4 complements the discussion exploring medical and philosophical uses of the concept of pneuma in the later Greco-Roman traditions through two illustrative examples. It examines the role of pneuma in the cosmology and psychology of the Neoplatonist philosophical school through the theories of one of its most important representatives, Proclus. And it examines the physiological role of pneuma in later medical thought by looking at the 14th-century physician, John Zacharias Aktouarios, who composed an entire treatise on pneuma, related pathologies and their treatment. The volume is unified thematically as well as by a common approach to questions of textual interpretation. The interaction among these studies will provide the reader with a more complete picture and comprehensive discussion concerning how different conceptual frameworks influenced the transformation of the concept of pneuma over time. In addition, these studies will be supplemented by an extensive Introduction, composed by the editors, which will offer a synthetic discussion of the history of the concept of pneuma based on the results of the individual studies in the volume and the broader historical context. Although the chronological span of the volume is broad, the thematic scope is focused and offers a tight-knit discussion of Greco-Roman medical and philosophical traditions and discourse, especially natural philosophy. The exclusion of discussions on Jewish, Christian and Muslim ideas of pneuma is motivated by the nature of these traditions and by the scholarly state of the art in the field. Greco-Roman natural philosophy is a distinct discourse with a unique set of philosophical and medical concerns, in which pneuma plays a central role. Although the natural philosophical tradition informed monotheistic medical and philosophical traditions, it is often overshadowed, in later medical and philosophical writers, by theological considerations of pneuma. Including papers on particular aspects of pneuma in 3 the theories of the monotheistic writers would contribute little to the discussion of the Greco-Roman traditions discussed in this volume. Conversely, since it would not be possible to include many papers on each of the three monotheistic traditions, such a format would not contribute much to scholars of these other traditions either. For those scholars, the recent volume The Holy Spirit, Inspiration, and the Cultures of Antiquity (De Gruyter, 2014) is dedicated to the concept of pneuma in the Judeo-Christian tradition and addresses the philosophical and medical contexts of the theological discourse. The contributions to this volume are based mostly on papers presented in the conference The Concept of Pneuma after Aristotle, which took place at Exzellenzcluster Topoi in Berlin in July 2015 – the exceptions being Chapters 5 and 8, which have been added in order to offer a more complete picture of the period between Aristotle and Galen. The interrelation between the four sections in the volume and the traditions they represent was manifest in the discussions during the conference; the extensive time dedicated to comments on each

My dissertation examines the literary manifestation of Stoicism’s legacy, in particular regarding the institution and danger of autonomy, the foundation and limitation of virtue, the nature of the passions, the difference between good and evil, and the referentiality of language. Alongside the standard satirical responses to the ancient creed’s rigor and rationalism, seventeenth- and eighteenth-century poetry, drama, and prose developed Stoic formulations that made the most demanding of philosophical ideals tenable within the framework of common experience. Instead of serving as hallmarks for hypocrisy, the literary stoics I investigate uphold a brand of stoicism fit for the post-regicidal, post- Protestant Reformation, post-scientific revolutionary world. My project reveals how writers used Stoicism to determine the viability of philosophical precept and establish ways of compensating for human fallibility. The ambivalent status of the Stoic sage, staged and restaged in countless texts, exemplified the period’s anxiety about measuring up to its ideals, its efforts to discover the plenitude of ii natural laws and to live by them.

I investigate digressions and excurses on mountains, rivers, and certain myths associated aetiologically with the land, and demonstrate how Stoic physics and cosmology – in particular the concepts of cosmic (dis)order, collapse, and conflagration – play a role in the way Lucan writes about the landscape in the context of a civil war poem. Building on previous analyses of the Bellum Civile that provide background on its literary context (Ahl, 1976), on Lucan’s poetic technique (Masters, 1992), and on landscape in Roman literature (Spencer, 2010), I approach Lucan’s depiction of the natural world by focusing on the mutual effect of humanity and landscape on each other. Thus, hardships posed by the land against characters like Caesar and Cato, gloomy and threatening atmospheres, and dangerous or unusual weather phenomena all have places in my study. I also explore how Lucan’s landscapes engage with the tropes of the locus amoenus or horridus (Schiesaro, 2006) and elements of the sublime (Day, 2013).

It's also important to know what Scripture teaches about "spirit," in order to discern and avoid deceptions done in the name of and by a Holy Spirit or Holy Ghost. There is a counterfeit "different Spirit," "who is now working in the children of disobedience" (2 Cor 11:4; Eph 2:2). In the Hebrew Bible the word ruach occurs 378 times. Its base meaning is "moving air" — whether in the form of breath, a breeze, or violent storm winds. Kohlenberger & Swanson, Hebrew English Concordance to the Old Testament (1998), p. 1461 entry #8120. In about 100 places in English Bibles, the word is rendered "wind." Notice Yeshua's play on the Greek word pneuma in John 3 and the parallel in John 20: That which is begotten of the flesh is flesh; and that which is begotten of pneuma is pneuma.... The pneuma blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going. So is every one who is begotten of the pneuma (Jn 3:6,8). When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive holy pneuma." (Jn 20:22) Most often in English Bibles ruach is translated either as "spirit" or "Spirit" (the difference is explained below). This is the immaterial dimension of a human being or of God.

    Prosochē: Illuminating the Path of the Prokoptōn by Christopher Fisher Prosochē (προσοχή) [pro-soh-KHAY]—the attitude and practice of attention—is the fundamental Stoic spiritual attitude.1 It is a state of continuous, vigilant, and unrelenting attentiveness to oneself—the present impressions, present desires, and present actions which shape one's moral character (prohairesis).2 When you relax your attention for a while, do not fancy you will recover it whenever you please; but remember this, that because of your fault of today your affairs must necessarily be in a worse condition in future occasions. (Discourses 4.12.1) In this brief essay I will attempt to explain the meaning of prosochē, why it is a necessary element of Stoicism practiced as a way of life, and what benefits one can expect from consistent, vigilant attention to their assents, desires, and actions. Additionally, I will point to some specific exercises or practices to help the prokoptōn (one who is making progress)3 develop and deepen the attitude and practice of prosochē. Prosochē is essential for the prokoptōn to practice the three Stoic disciplines4 prescribed by Epictetus (Discourse 3.2.1-5). Constant attention is necessary to live according to Nature. Once one embarks on the path of the prokoptōn, the attitude of prosochē serves as an ever-present, vigilant watchman to ensure one continues to make forward progress. As Epictetus warns, relaxing our attention (prosochē) is not only dangerous because of the faults which may be committed in the present, but “because of your fault today your affairs must be necessarily in a worse condition on future occasions” (Discourses 4.12.1).

Several specific aspects of the human body have often been proposed as the seat of consciousness, not only in medical texts, but also within historical documents, poetry, legal proceedings, and religious litera- ture. Among the most prominently proposed have been the heart and breath, favoring a cardiopulmonary seat of individualism. This understanding was by no means stagnant, but evolved over time, as did the role of the brain in the definition of what it means to be human.

    Stoicism A school of thought that flourished in Greek and Roman antiquity. It was one of the loftiest and most sublime philosophies in the record of Western civilization. In urging participation in the affairs of man, Stoics have always believed that the goal of all inquiry is to provide man with a mode of conduct characterized by tranquillity of mind and certainty of moral worth. Nature and scope of Stoicism For the early Stoic philosopher, as for all the post-Aristotelian schools, knowledge and its pursuit are no longer held to be ends in themselves. The Hellenistic Age was a time of transition, and the Stoic philosopher was perhaps its most influential spokesman. A new culture was in the making. The heritage of an earlier period, with Athens as its intellectual leader, was to continue, but to undergo many changes. If, as with Socrates, to know is to know oneself, rationality as the sole means by which something outside of the self might be achieved may be said to be the hallmark of Stoic belief. As a Hellenistic philosophy, Stoicism presented an ars vitae, a way of accommodation for people to whom the human condition no longer appeared as the mirror of a universal, calm, and ordered existence. Reason alone could reveal the constancy of cosmic order and the originative source of unyielding value; thus, reason became the true model for human existence. To the Stoic, virtue is an inherent feature of the world, no less inexorable in relation to man than are the laws of nature. The Stoics believed that perception is the basis of true knowledge.

    Pneuma – Sexuality – Sex Difference: From Arabic to European Philosophy and Medical Practice Jennifer Wynne Hellwarth Abstract: The theory of pneuma (life force, vital heat), marked largely by Galen’s notion that there were two kinds, pneuma zotikon (life principle, vital spirit) and pneuma psychikon (or spiritus animalis, the mind, or psychic spirit), came to be translated into Arabic start- ing in the ninth century. Many Arabic texts included the addition of an earlier, Greek formulation of a third kind of pneuma, which is called “natural” (spiritus naturalis). The tripartite division between spirits and their functions, which also corresponded to the tripartite division of the soul as articulated in Plato and Aristotle’s works, was largely ac- cepted in the Middle Ages as being crucial to physical and mental function and quality of life – the primary moving cause. This essay seeks to contextualize and historicize the theory of pneuma and how the theory of “vital spirits” was shaped and transmitted from Greek to Arabic, and then into European philosophy and practices. This essay defines the concept of pneuma and its relationship to the soul, sexual desire, sexuality, sex differ- ence, and sperm production. Further, it traces some of these principles to medieval liter- ary examples. Though the term Lebenskraft, describing the physical, chemical, and mechan- ical forces of organic matter, appears to have been first introduced into medicine (and then into colloquial speech) in about 1774, I would like to suggest that the history of this

    PAUL’S THEOLOGY Lesson 41 Paul’s Anthropological Terms – Spirit Recently, we had a discussion about how cartoons have changed over the years. Some changes have been, in my humble opinion, for the worse. With all due respect, neither “Rolie Polie Olie” nor “Dora the Explorer” hold a candle to the original Bugs Bunny or Yosemite Sam cartoons. Some changes, however, have been for the better. “Phineas and Ferb,” while not the greatest cartoon ever, is excellent, and it certainly beats some of the early cartoons of my generation. One particularly bad early cartoon was called, “Casper the Friendly Ghost.” Ugh. It was a cartoon about a friendly ghost who consistently scared people, even though he was always trying to be friendly, with not a bad bone in his body (joke intended.) In 1995, a feature film was made named Casper that built off the legacy of the cartoon. The film explained that a boy named Casper had stayed out in the snow too long sledding and died of pneumonia. After death, Casper became the ghost on whom the movie (and by extension, the television cartoon) was based. Casper, and other similar ideas of “ghosts” give us a bit of a distorted meaning of a word that has an interesting history. “Ghost” comes from the Germanic aspect of the English language. In Old English (Anglo Saxon), the word used was gast just slightly removed from the cousin language of Old German which had geist. (The German word is still in use and residually found in English words like “poltergeist.”) In the Old English, the word gast (ghost) carried the meaning of “breath” as well as the soul or spirit of a person that was the source of life.

    STOICISM AND ANTI-STOICISM IN QOHELETH by JOHN G. GAMMIE The University of Tulsa, Tulsa, Oklahoma 74104 It is a distinct pleasure to submit this comparative and linguistic study to a volume in honor of Shlomo Dov Goitein whose scholarly work did so much to illumine the life of Jewish communities in the Arab world. The present study seeks to probe the impact of one particular Hellenistic philosophy on a Jewish intellectual of the third century B.C.E. whose work was destined to become part of the sacred scripture of his own people as well as of the people of a daughter religion. Over fifty years ago Galling (1932, p. 276) identified four mam questions among researchers in Qoheleth: (I) How should one read the theme of the book and understand its arrangement? (2) Are the "I-sayings" signs of an autobiography, and can they be coordinated with "historical allusions"? (3) Do there exist con­ nections between Qoheleth's wisdom and the wisdom literature of the ancient near East? and (4) Has Greek philosophy been worked into the book? (My translation) By and large the same basic questions have continued to dominate in the research since Galling. A fairly thorough survey of research on Qoheleth by James Crenshaw may be found in a recent issue of the Hebrew Annual Review (1983, pp. 41-56). Accordingly, a selective update in response to the questions in Galling's earlier essay may serve as an introduction to the present inquiry. (I) On the issue of arrangement, Zimmerli (1974) has convincingly shown there is a greater coherence among the various sentences than Galling was inclined to accept; Loader (l 979) has identified "polarities" within the book and has demonstrated its dynamic unity on the basis of their presence, whereas Wright (1968) and Murphy (1981) have focused on key phrases as a means of establishing its formal unity.

Bakker 1 Introduction Ever since the commencement of the new quest for the historical Jesus (1953) the phenomenon of pneuma-Christology or Spirit-Christology has been persis- tently debated.1 The wording may be different, but the idea of Jesus incarnated or generated or even adopted by (or as) the Spirit has extensively been explored throughout the last decades by a variety of scholars, such as Myk Habets, David Coffey, Ralph Del Colle, Clark Pinnock, Michael Welker, and Roger Haight. As for the Netherlands, in particular the names of Hendrikus Berkhof, Edward Schillebeeckx, Harry Kuitert, Gerrit van de Kamp, Piet Schoonenberg, Cees den Heijer, Gijs Dingemans, and Kees van der Kooi deservedly receive attention.2 This article contributes to the discussion on pneuma-Christology, espe- cially concerning its early Judeo-Christian identity, by focusing on the Odes of Solomon. More than in other Judeo-Christian sources, in these Odes the Spirit serves the cause of the proximity of God to human beings as exempli- fied in God’s proximity to the logos incarnate. In this way, pneuma-Christology, as a Christological domain of its own, evolves into ‘applied Christology,’ re- enacting the life of Christ in the church. So far, pneuma-Christology and ap- plied Christology have not yet been explored as a bipolar engagement. As to pneuma-Christology, the consensus at this moment—if we may speak of a consensus—is that in the New Testament as well as in other early Christian sources the coming of the Word (logos) and the coming of the Spirit (pneu- ma) serve complementary interests.

First, we have a remarkable degree of voluntary control over our passions, and we can and should exercise this control to keep ourselves from having any irrational passiom: at all. Second, the universe is determined by the providential divine will, and in any situation we can and should align ourselves with this divine will in order to achieve equanimity. Whereas Descartes largely endorses the Stoic picture, Spinoza develops a distinctive, intellectualized version of this view. Although the influence of the Stoic outlook on sixteenth and seventeenth century European culture has been well-documented, it is seldom recalled how, in particular, Stoicism affects the views of the early modern European philosophers.2 The works of Descartes and Spinoza supply remarkable illus­ trations of this impact.

The proofs are of the most diverse kind. Some are dialectical in the sense of operating with lY~o~a, others are severely rational with an emphasis on syllogistic stringency, and still others may be classed as "physical" inasmuch as they are drawn from a consideration df the Cosmos and a theory regarding the basic substance or power at work in it. The chapters embodying these proofs have often been anal~ed and there has been a considerable amount of discussion about the source or sources from which Cicero derived these proofs 2). We wish here to concentrate on a relatively small section in this first part of Book 11 and to examine once more the question of its source. The arguments of this section (11, 23-32 mundum) are distinctly of the "physical" type 3); all of them lead us to recognize the significance of one particular vis, the vis caloris. From this concept we arrive in the end by a brief and simple step at the Stoic idea of the deity. In the first two paragraphs (23f.) the vis caloris is Been to be the agent of growth in all plants and animals 4); physiologioal observations here presented acquaint us with the manifestations and the effects of this power.
