Conclusion: Popular Music, Aesthetic Value, and Materiality
CONCLUSION: POPULAR MUSIC, AESTHETIC VALUE, AND MATERIALITY Popular music has been accused of being formulaic, homogeneous, man- ufactured, trite, vulgar, trivial, ephemeral, and so on. These condemna- tions have roots in aspects of the Western aesthetic tradition, especially its modernist and expressivist branches, according to which great art innovates, breaks and re-makes the rules, expresses the artist’s personal vision or unique emotions, or all these. Popular music has its defenders. But they have tended to appeal to the same inherited aesthetic criteria, defending some branches of popular music at the expense of others― valorising its artistic, expressive, innovative, or authentic branches against mere ‘pop’. These evaluations are problematic, because they presuppose all along a set of criteria that are slanted against the popular fi eld. We therefore need new frameworks for the evaluation of popular music. These frameworks need to enable us to evaluate pieces of popular music by the standards proper to this particular cultural form―to judge how well these pieces work as popular music, not how successfully they rise above the popular condition. To devise such frameworks we need an account of popular music’s standard features and of the further organising qualities and typical val- ues to which these features give rise. Popular music normally has four layers of sound―melody, chords, bass, and percussion―and each layer is normally made up of repetitions of short elements, these repeti- tions being aligned temporally with one another, with whole sections of repeated material then being repeated in turn to constitute song sections. © The Author(s) 2016 249 A. -
An Analysis of Selected Music in Disney Princess Films by Gillian
“A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes”: An Analysis of Selected Music in Disney Princess Films by Gillian Downey A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Chemistry (Honors Scholar) Presented May 11, 2016 Commencement June 2016 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Gillian Downey for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Chemistry presented on May 11, 2016. Title: “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes”: An Analysis of Selected Music in Disney Princess Films. Abstract approved: ______________________________________________________ Patti Duncan The Disney Princesses are some of the most beloved and well-recognized characters in animation across the globe. Most of these characters sing throughout their movie. This essay analyzes what I refer to as the “I Want” song of several Disney Princesses. It is divided into three sections, one for each of the main themes described in these songs: true love, freedom, and self-acceptance. It was found that the Disney Princesses follow a basic chronological line in their desires. The oldest characters desire love, while the newest want to be happy with who they are inside. Because these films and their music have been treasured for decades, these characters can strongly influence viewers’ lives. Where appropriate, the potential impacts of choosing certain Disney Princesses for role models is discussed. An appendix is included with the lyrics for each analyzed song. Key Words: Disney, music, -

DOCUMENT RESUME ED 284 312 CS 505 647 AUTHOR Burns, Gary TITLE Dreams and Mediation in Music Video. PUB DATE 5 Apr 86 NOTE 41p.; Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Culture Association (Atlanta, GA, April 1986). PUB TYPE Speeches/Conference Papers (150) EDRS PRICE MF01/PCO2 Plus Postage. DESCRIPTORS Audiences; Fantasy; Films; *Imagery; Mass Media; *Popular Culture; Television Viewing; Theories; *Visual Stimuli IDENTIFIERS *Dreams; Media Imagery; *Music Videos; Popular Music ABSTRACT The most extensive use of dream imagery in popular culture occurs in the visual arts, and in the past fiveyears it has become evident that music video (a semi-narrative hybrid of film and television) is the most dreamlike media product of all. Therampant depiction and implication of dreams and media fantasies in music video are often strongly encouraged by the lyrics and soundtrack, formal requirements. Song lyrics, sometimes fragmented and rarely telling a coherent story, encourage elliptical video narratives, arbitrary and/or unrealistic settings, and direct address to the camera. The visuals often imply that the singer is thinking or dreaming the soundtrack. An informal analysis yields several key nonverbal indicators of dream in pop records, suchas whispering, frequency filter effects, echo, reverberation, tremolo, sounds played backwards, a tendency to take liberties with rhythm, instrumental improvisation, and sometimes a background drone effect. The theory of dream imagery and mediation aids in explainingsome of the more mysterious features of several popular videos, suchas (1) "Shame" (Motels), (2) "Don't Come Around Here No More" (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers), (3) "Heaven" (Bryan Adams), (4) "Undercoverof the Night" (Rolling Stones), and (5) "Good Lovin'" (Young Rascals). -

The airwaves were being dominated by artists such as Britney Spears, Nelly, Blink 182, Destiny’s Child and many more. The huge idea of this era was the rise in boy bands and how impactful they’ve become with such a small amount of time. A boy band can be defined as a vocal group consisting of young male singers, usually in their teenage years or in their early twenties who sing a majority of love songs, have very insync and amazing choreographed dance moves, no physical instruments being played by the members of the band, a huge fan base (usually younger girls), lastly, a couple of heartthrobs to make the fans go crazy. -
