HITMEN HEADLINES: The Calgary Hitmen close out a home-and-home set with the Kootenay ICE this afternoon at the . It’s a 4:00 p.m. start for RE/MAX Presents: WHL Suits up with Don Cherry to Promote Organ Donation and Sunday Funday presented by Ricky’s All Day Grill. The Hitmen will wear limited edition jerseys featuring each player’s nickname on the name bar along with black and copper flowers designed as a Don Cherry sports jacket. A high white collar, red tie, red pocket square in the shape of a rose, custom cuffs featuring Don Cherry’s initials with a Canadian maple leaf, a Kidney Foundation of shoulder patch and a RE/MAX shoulder patch complete the one-of-a-kind look. Fans can bid on the stylish uniforms at ElevateAuctions.com. The online auction opens at game time today and closes Sunday, Mar. 10 at 8:00 p.m., with all proceeds going to the local chapter of the Kidney Foundation. In addition to game-worn and game-issued uniforms, fans can also bid on a Don Cherry-autographed jersey while the first 1,000 fans in the building receive a limited second-edition Don Cherry and dog Blue bobblehead. Plaid RE/MAX drink koozies shaped like a house will also be available at various locations on the concourse.

LAST GAME RECAP: Calgary beat the ICE 5-2 in Cranbrook last night to run their winning streak to four games. James Malm paced the visitors by scoring a hat-trick to reach 31 goals, surpassing the 30 goal plateau for the first time in his career. Josh Prokop with his seventh and Mark Kastelic with his team-leading 45th also found the back of the net for the visitors. Riley Stotts, Carson Focht and all chipped in a pair of assists in a game that saw Calgary build leads of 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2. Marco Creta and Bradley Ginnell replied for Kootenay on a night when former became the first inductee into the ICE Hall of Fame during a special pre-game ceremony. Calgary outshot Kootenay 31-26 and went 1-2 on the power play. Kootenay was 0-3 with the extra attacker which included a two-man advantage for 69 seconds.

VS. KOOTENAY: Today is the sixth and final regular season meeting between the Hitmen and ICE. Calgary is 4-1 against Kootenay having outscored the ICE by a combined 24-11. James Malm (4g, 4a) leads the Hitmen in the season series with eight points each while Carson Focht (1g, 6a) is next with seven. (1g, 3a) is the top- performer for Kootenay with four points. Calgary is 11-1-1 in their last 13 home games against the ICE.

PLAYOFF CHASE: With six games to go in the regular season, Calgary is third in the Central Division sitting five points ahead of Medicine Hat which occupies the first Eastern Conference Wildcard spot. Looking up, the Hitmen are six points behind Lethbridge for second in the division. Both the Tigers and Hurricanes are idle today.

HOME AND AWAY: Calgary is 19-9-3-0 at home this season while Kootenay is 4-20-4-3 on the road.

STREAKS: Three Hitmen take five-game streaks into today’s game: Carson Focht (4g, 9a), James Malm (8g, 4a) and Egor Zamula (8a). FAST FACTS: During Wednesday’s victory over Swift Current, Carson Focht became the first Hitmen player since Brock Nixon to score four goals in a game. ROSTER MOVES: Following Friday’s game against Brandon, the Hitmen returned 18-year-old forward Orca Wiesbatt to the MJHL’s Portage Terriers. On Monday the Hitmen recalled 15-year-old forward Zac Funk from the BCMMHL’s Fraser Valley Thunderbirds where he leads the team in scoring with 55 points (33g, 22a) in 36 games. Funk made his WHL debut Wednesday against Swift Current and in three games has seven shots on goal. The transactions leave Calgary with seven defencemen, two goalies and 14 forwards.

DID YOU KNOW?: Mark Kastelic is the first Hitmen player to score 40 goals in a season since Matteo Gennaro netted 43 in the 2016-17 campaign. Prior to Gennaro, scored 47 goals in 2014-15. Kastelic’s 86 career goals have him 14th on the clubs all-time goal scoring list, trailing by three markers for 13th spot. holds the franchise record with 204.

REGULAR SEASON CAREER MILESTONE WATCH: James Malm is nine points shy of 200. Vladislav Yeryomenko is four points away from 100 while Riley Stotts needs three goals for 50. Carson Focht is five games shy of 200. Jack McNaughton reached 1,000 saves on Wednesday against Swift Current. Devan Klassen scored his first career WHL goal Feb. 23 in Swift Current. Jackson van de Leest played game 100 in Regina on Feb. 22.

WHL TOP 15: Mark Kastelic is third in the WHL in goals with 45 while his 23 power play markers lead the league. Egor Zamula is seventh in defencemen scoring with 53 points. Dakota Krebs is tied for 12th in plus/minus among at +23.

NHL ATTENTION: NHL Central Scouting has named two Hitmen players and one prospect among the top skaters available for the 2019 NHL Draft in their mid-term rankings. Defenceman Jackson van de Leest along with forwards Mark Kastelic and Quinn Olson are all ranked among North American skaters. The 17-year-old van de Leest is among the ice time leaders on the Hitmen blueline and makes the list at 145. Olson is ranked 154 with his rights acquired by the Hitmen in a Jan. 10, 2019 trade from Prince Albert. Kastelic, the 19-year-old Hitmen captain, is ranked at 196.

CANADA WINTER GAMES: Three Hitmen prospects played in the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer. Forward Sean Tschigerl captained Team to a bronze medal. Tschigerl (1g, 2a) finished the tournament with three points. Defenceman Tyson Galloway (4a) tallied four points for Team which finished seventh and defenceman Rory Neill (3a) collected three points for fifth place .

UPCOMING GAMES: Calgary will enjoy a two-day break before heading to Medicine Hat for a date with the Tigers on Wednesday, Mar. 6. LAST GAME – 5-2 LOSS TO CALGARY: The Kootenay ICE are coming off of a 5-2 loss to the Calgary Hitmen on March 2. The ICE received goals from Marco Creta and Brad Ginnell. Creta led all ICE players with two points. Curtis Meger stopped 26-of-31 shots. The Hitmen got three goals from James Malm, while Mark Kastelic and Josh Prokop added the others. Goaltender Jack McNaughton blocked 24-of-26. The ICE were outshot 31-26. They went 0- for-3 on the power play, 1-for-2 on the kill and won 23-of-62 face-offs.

NEWS & NOTES

JARRET STOLL INDUCTED INTO ICE HALL OF FAME: On March 2, prior to the game between the ICE and the Calgary Hitmen, ICE great Jarret Stoll was inducted into the ICE Hall of Fame. Stoll helped deliver two WHL championships (2000, 2002) and a (2002) to the City of Cranbrook. Currently, Stoll is second in franchise history in goals (124), assists (162), points (286) and power play goals (54). The hall of fame will recognize and honour former ICE players and staff who made outstanding contributions on and off the ice during their time with the organization.

MARCH SCHEDULE: The ICE are scheduled to play eight games in the month of March (five home, three road). During March, the ICE face four Central Division teams (Calgary (x2), Red Deer (x2), Edmonton, Medicine Hat) and two East Division teams (Swift Current, Brandon). The first game of the month is March 1 against Swift Current. The final game of the month, and the regular season, is March 17 against Red Deer.

3-IN-3 TO BEGIN MARCH: The ICE begin the month of March with a three games in three days stretch starting on Friday, March 1 and ending on Sunday, March 3. The ICE host Swift Current and Calgary on March 1 and 2 respectively before heading to Calgary on March 3. This will be the eighth and final three-in-three of the season for the ICE.

FINAL ROAD TRIP APPROACHING: The ICE begin its final road trip of the 2018-19 regular season in less than one week. The final two road games of the campaign will take place against the Red Deer Rebels and Edmonton Oil Kings on March 9 and 10 respectively. The ICE conclude its regular season schedule with two home games, the final one taking place on March 17 against the Rebels.

SCHELLENBERG HITS 100 GAMES: ICE ’00-born forward Austin Schellenberg played in his 100th career WHL regular season game on March 2 against the Calgary Hitmen. Schellenberg has played in 33 games with the ICE since being acquired from the Red Deer Rebels at the beginning of December 2018.

THREE ICE PLAYERS RANKED: On January 21, NHL Central Scouting’s midterm ranking was announced and it included three ICE players: ’01-born forward Peyton Krebs, ’01-born forward Cole Muir and ’01-born goaltender Jesse Makaj. Krebs was ranked eighth among North American skaters, Muir was ranked 160th among North American skaters and Makaj was ranked 21st among North American goalies.

WHITE EARNS POINT 100: ICE ’98-born forward Jaeger White earned his 100th career WHL point on February 20 against the Regina Pats. White reached the milestone with a goal in the first period of that game against the Pats. Heading into the game on March 3, White is first on the team in goals (26) and second in assists (23) and points (49).

GOAL DIFFERENTIAL PER GAME: Through 62 games this season, the ICE have played in 20 one-goal games, nine two-game games and 33 three-plus goal games.

EXTRA TIME NEEDED: The ICE have needed extra time to decide games 13 times this season. Eight have ended in overtime and five have been decided in a shootout. The ICE are 3-10 when a game goes into extra time this season. The latest instance came on February 23 when the Saskatoon Blades defeated the ICE 4-3 in a shootout.

POWER PLAY NUMBERS: Through 62 games this season, the ICE have scored 46 goals on 264 power play attempts (17.4%). Heading into the game on March 3, that percentage is good for 19th in the WHL.

PENALTY KILL NUMBERS: Through 62 games this season, the ICE penalty kill is ranked 22nd in the WHL. The ICE have allowed 68 goals on 218 PK attempts (68.8%). The ICE have also added three shorthanded markers. The latest happened on January 26 against the Prince Albert Raiders.

ICE VS CENTRAL DIVISION: The ICE are 3-18-3-1 against the Central Division this season. The latest game against a Central Division opponent came on March 2, a 5-2 victory for the Calgary Hitmen.

ICE VS HITMEN: The ICE and the Hitmen meet six times during the 2018-19 regular season. The game on March 3 is the sixth and final meeting of the season between these two teams. The ICE haven’t visited the Hitmen since January 27.

HOME & ROAD: This season, the ICE have a home record of 8-20-3-0 and a road record of 4-20-4-3. The ICE have played 31 games at Western Financial Place in Cranbrook and have played 31 road games.
