Sc., Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, 2001 DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Entomology in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2007 Urbana, Illinois Abstract The leafhopper subfamily Cicadellinae (=sharpshooters) includes approximately 340 genera and over 2,000 species distributed worldwide, but it is most diverse in the Neotropical region. In contrast to the vast majority of leafhoppers (members of the family Cicadellidae), which are specialists on phloem or parenchyma fluids, cicadellines feed on xylem sap. Because xylem sap is such a nutritionally poor diet, xylem specialists must ingest large quantities of sap while feeding. They continuously spurt droplets of liquid excrement, forming the basis for their common name. Specialization on xylem sap also occurs outside the Membracoidea, in members of the related superfamilies Cicadoidea (cicadas) and Cercopoidea (spittlebugs) of the order Hemiptera. Because larger insects with greater cibarial volume are thought to more easily overcome the negative pressure of xylem sap, previous authors suggested that there may be a threshold of 8 mm above which, the energetic cost of feeding is negligible. In chapter 1 the method of phylogenetic contrasts was used to re-investigate the evolution of body size of Hemiptera and test the hypothesis that shifts to xylem feeding were associated with an increase in body size. After correcting for phylogenetic dependence and taking into consideration possible alternative higher-level phylogenetic scenarios, statistical analyses of hemipteran body sizes did not show a significant increase in xylem feeding lineages. -

Bosque-Pérez, Ph.D ii iii ABSTRACT Sharpshooters (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae: Cicadellinae) are potential vectors of Xylella fastidiosa, the bacterial causal agent of coffee “crespera” disease. This study examined the effects of local (shade composition, organic or conventional management, and weed management) and landscape (surrounding land uses) context on sharpshooter communities in coffee agroforestry systems (CAFS) within the Volcánica Central-Talamanca Biological Corridor (VCTBC), in Costa Rica. On a broader perspective, this study also sought to evaluate how the ecosystem service of natural pest control overlaps with other ecosystem services provided by CAFS and how decision makers view these services. The abundance and species richness of sharpshooters were evaluated in four CAFS types present in the VCTBC, using yellow sticky traps and Malaise migration traps in 2005 and 2006. Approximately 73 species of sharpshooters were found in CAFS within the VCTBC. Sharpshooters were more abundant from June to September and declined afterwards. Sharpshooter communities were distinct in each agroforestry system, and coffee sharpshooter communities were more similar to pasture than to forest sharpshooter communities. Shade was a key local variable, negatively affecting sharpshooter abundance. -

Univ. de Costa Rica, 11501-2060, San José, Costa Rica Neotropical Entomology 37(4):436-448 (2008) Hemipteran Diversity (Cicadellidae and Clastopteridae) in Three Coffee Production Zones Affected by Xylella fastidiosa (Wells et al.) in Costa Rica ABSTRACT - A survey was conducted during 2002, 2003 and 2004 to determine the leafhopper species composition, abundance, richness, diversity, evenness, occurrence and fl ight activity among three coffee production zones of Costa Rica. Yellow sticky traps were used to qualify and quantify the number of aerial leafhoppers during the sampling period. A total of 82,500 individuals, belonging to 139 species within nine leafhopper subfamilies, were trapped. San Isidro de León Cortés site presented the highest diversity from the three surveyed sites. Twenty fi ve species were frequently trapped at least in one of the studied zones, and only Coelidiana sp.1, Osbornellus sp.1, Scaphytopius sp.1 and Empoasca sp. were trapped throughout the sampling period. The fl ight activity of the taxa that contain the main vectors of Xylella fastidiosa Wells et al. showed differences among the sampling zones. NGUYEN2 1University of Florida, IFAS, 700 Experiment Station Road, Lake Alfred, FL 33850 2Department of Entomology and Nematology, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL 32611 ABSTRACT Spring and fall field trials were conducted to determine the efficacy of two species of ento- mopathogenic nematodes for the control of larvae of Diaprepes abbreviatus in a citrus grove with alfisol type soil (sandy clay loam). Both Steinernema riobrave (Bio Vector 355) as a wa- ter-dispersible granule and Heterorhabditis indica (Grubstake™ 100) as a paste on sponge at rates from 22-108 IJ’s/cm2 failed to reduce larval populations in the tree rhizosphere at 25 d post-treatment. Larval parasitism by entomopathogenic nematodes in baited screen cages was sporadic over time, with the only significant treatment effect occurring at the highest rate (108 IJ’s/cm2) of S. riobrave in the fall at 7 d post-treatment. Possible constraints to nem- atode efficacy are discussed.
