AnTir Heraldic ACHIEVEMENTS Document History: Compiled and composed by Torric inn Bjorn, May XXVIII/1993 - Edited and revised by Elizabeth Braidwood and Frederic Badger, May XXXIV/1999 - Rewritten and revised by Frederic Badger, October XXXIX/2004. This document is based on the result of a meeting that was held at the 1993 AnTir Kingdom Heraldic Symposium. Attendees included: Laurel Sovereign of Arms Bruce Draconarius of Mistholme, Kingdom Staff heralds including Black Lion Drogo the Forgetful, representatives of the Scribal authority including (we believe) Chief Scribe Eleanor the Clumsy and other interested parties. Further information was added in discussion with Black Lion Guerin de Bourgogne and arranged and updated by Zenobia Naphtali, Elizabeth Braidwood, Celdae the Seeker and Frederic Badger. This format was edited and revised by Bronwen Elgars, February XXXVIII/2004 for the purposes of printing a pamphlet as a teaching aid for the An Tir Heraldic Achievements Ithra class. Rewritten and revised by Bronwen Sable Sable, February XLIV/2010 for addition of pamphlet form to the An Tir College of Scribes website. What is an Achievement? An Achievement is a “formal” display of personal or civic armory. Armory is often used in informal methods of display, such as painting the heraldic device onto personal belongings or stitching it onto a field banner. Sometimes, however, a formal display of personal armory is called for, as on an official document detailing an Award, Grant or Patent of Arms modeled after similar period recordings. An Achievement always includes some sort of shield shape, upon which the arms are rendered. It may also contain other elements, called “addiments” which surround the shield.

CLAN MACRAE SOCIETY O F C A N A D A ONLINE THE COURT OF THE LOR D L Y O N The Court of the Lord Lyon All heraldry in Scotland is controlled by the Court of the Lord Lyon King of Arms, commonly known as the Lyon Court, and located at New Register House in Edinburgh. The origins of the Lyon Court are literally lost in the mists of time as the office of Lord Lyon incorporates that of the Royal Sennachie or Bard whose duty it was to proclaim the lineage and deeds of the ancestors of the King. From this Celtic start, the position has developed into a judicial one, with the Lord Lyon sitting as a judge on armorial matters. Older medieval heraldry in Scotland is extensive, but poorly documented, which is hardly surprising given the course of Scottish history. Certainly, it can be shown that heraldry existed by the last quarter of the twelfth century, but records of heraldry from the time before the War of Independence went south with King Edward and were like as not lost, whilst other early records appear to have been treated very much as the personal property of the heralds and have thus been lost. Better evidence exists from slightly later periods and this shows that the arms of most of the great families of Scotland, and some which were not so great, had certainly settled down by the fourteenth century, as can be seen from surviving armorial rolls which show Scottish heraldry. The earliest surviving such roll that the author knows of is the Balliol Roll which was the property of the late Sir Anthony Wagner and which is believed to be an English manuscript of the 1330s.

IV- La vie chrétienne Un chrétien croit qu' ’après la mort il sera jugé en fonction de ses actions sur Terre. Pour gagner son salut (aller au paradis), il doit respecter les enseignements de l ’église pendant sa vie terrestre sinon il ira en enfer. Les trois plus grandes parties de la vie chrétienne sont: le baptême à la naissance, le mariage et les funérailles à la mort. V- Les vêtements Évêque: Il porte une croix pectorale et une bague en or, son costume est violet, il porte une coiffe lors des cérémonies. Religieuse: elle est vêtu d’un voile. Curé: il a une longue robe marron. Chanoine: il a une grande robe noir et une sorte de gros gilet blanc. Pape: avec une croix à triple traverse et de grandes robes. Cardinal: avec son chapeau plat et rouge ( le galero) d’où pendait des houppes. Abbé: il couvre sa tête d’un bonnet. Moine: il est vêtu d’une grande robe marron attachée à la taille par une corde. VI- La composition du clergé. Le clergé est composé d’un évêque, d’une religieuse, d’un curé, d’un chanoine, d’un pape, d’un cardinal, d’un abbé et d’un chanoine. L’évêque L’évêque est considéré par les chrétiens comme le successeur des apôtres, et à ce titre, il est chargé d’enseigner la croyance et de la transmettre avec fidélité. Les catholiques reconnaissent en l’évêque le ministre de Dieu. Il exerce ses fonctions spirituelles au sein d’une circonscription appelée diocèse. La religieuse La religieuse est une personne qui appartient à un ordre dont les membres se consacrent à la religion.
