For Ummi and Abbi: I love you both. ABSTRACT: This thesis uses the case study of the Arab-Islamic Fulla doll to examine the relationships among globalization, consumption and cultural identities. Beginning with the question of how cultural products like the Fulla doll come to exist, I argue that the Fulla doll serves as an example of the process of creolization whereby non-Western peoples mobilize local customs and beliefs to transform globally-distributted consumer goods, thus re-contextualizing and assigning new meanings to these goods. Through an analysis of thirteen animated Fulla doll advertisements, I argue that the Barbie doll’s ethnic, religious and gendered identity has been re-contextualized to transform her into an Arab-Muslim woman, the Fulla doll. -

124 INTERLITT ERA RIA 2020, 25/1: 124–141 ZARIF KEYROUZ Representa tion of Places in Etel Adnan’s In the Heart of the Heart of Another Country and Of Cities & Women (Letters to Fawwaz) LAURE ZARIF KEYROUZ Abstract. This article will take a close look at two books of Etel Adnan which are strongly tied to the representation of places. References to nature found in both books link the places she is physically present in to her inner-spaces. Additionally, the people she encounters in these locations also become elements with which she weaves different places together. In Of Cities & Women (Letters to Fawwaz), the notion of place is particularly enriched by the different qualities of the women she finds in each location, comparing the situation of women in the Orient and the Occident. The shadow of recent wars hangs heavy in the memories of Adnan as she travels between these different places in both books – the thought of which never abandons her. Keywords: places; maps; literature; art; symbols; nature; woman; war Introduction Etel Adnan is one of Lebanon’s most important contemporary writers and a prime example of the intellectual nomadism1 that defines much of Lebanese contemporary literature and art. Her tangled personal journey across several continents have found their way into every aspect of her writing, which docu ments not only her travels but also her emotions and ever-changing perspectives as seen through the lenses of the places and spaces she finds 1 Etel Adnan, a great nomad, has ventured to many places throughout her long life. -

Those who had spent time elsewhere in the U.S. found predominantly rural and predominantly Protestant South Carolina to be almost as alien as they or their parents had found the United States due partly to the religious differences and partly to the cultural differences between the Northeast, where most of them had lived for at least a few years after arriving in the United States, and the Southeast. -

Introduction: (Lebanese) Mint in the (American) Landscape The house had been empty for a while, and it looked a little tired but we knew we could fix it up quite easily. It just needed a little TLC [tender loving care]. When we looked at the exterior of the property with our surveyor, that was when I first noticed the mint growing everywhere. It was running through the flowerbeds and even through the cracks in the foundation of the house, through the concrete! We knew immediately this must have been a Lebanese house at some point. Who else would have large plots of mint around here? We laughed at the hearty nature of the herb—it is so resilient! It will keep on growing despite having no Lebanese owners tending it. This gave us a good feeling about the place—we felt it gave us a connection. We bought the house the next day… (Fieldnotes, 30 Nov. 2005). This excerpt is from a conversation with Jean and Mike, a third-generation1 Lebanese couple about the house they had bought in Winslow, Maine in 2002. After Jean narrated the discovery of the mint, her husband Mike described that after buying the house they asked their Lebanese friends and family questions about the property. They learned that a first-generation Lebanese brother and sister from the Sarkis family had lived there many years before (both never married). -

In this thesis, I question whether the authenticity of modernism derives from its temporality period or its literary content while concurrently investigating several poems by Lebanese authors Kahlil Gibran and Nadia Tuéni and Syrian poet Adonis. Additionally, I trace Arabic modernism’s influence to the early 1900s-1910s to the conception of the Mahjar movement and the Pen League, an Arabic literary society consisting of Arabic immigrant writers. -

ARABI E MUSULMANI D’AMERICA Scompigliare le carte della letteratura arabo-americana: un’analisi di gender e di genre Lisa Marchi* Quando nel 1999 Judith Butler pubblica negli Stati Uniti Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity, si dichiara sicura di voler produrre “un ‘intervento’ provocatorio nella teoria femminista”1 con l’intento non di restringere, ma piutto- sto di ampliare il significato stesso di genere. È così che per intervento di Butler il genere diventa un trouble, vale a dire non una semplice categoria identitaria, né una mera questione aperta, ma piuttosto un guaio, una confusione, un fastidio- so e urticante disturbo che scompiglia il cosiddetto ordine naturale delle cose. È allo spirito provocatorio di Butler che guardo, mentre mi accingo a intervenire da una prospettiva di genere sulla traiettoria, tradizionalmente lineare e trionfa- listica, della storia della migrazione arabo-americana e della letteratura prodotta a partire da quell’esperienza migratoria. Qualcuno potrebbe chiedersi perché si renda necessario oggi rileggere la storia della migrazione e della letteratura ara- bo-americana proprio a partire dal libro di una teorica femminista statunitense ebrea. Ricordo che Butler, oltre a essere un’importante filosofa, è anche un’ebrea impegnata nell’attivismo politico. I suoi scritti e prese di posizione politiche per il riconoscimento del popolo palestinese, e più in generale per la realizzazione di una comunità politica globale più giusta, hanno prodotto delle trasformazioni radicali nel nostro modo
